- I've learned some lessons about safety while operating my Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 kayak. Even though I don't own the 136 model the design is pretty much the same as the 120. These tips are not necessarily the obvious ones you might initially think of in relation to fishing out of a kayak.

Great tips and I love my AP120 man. I'll give u one quick tip also .take a needle and thred , open up ur onyx life vest and sew one side of velcro to ur life jacket then stick some velcro on the back of remote so when ur in a busy situation u can just stick it to ur pfd and not worry about it flopping around and hitting buttons by accident.
We appreciate the time you veteran guys take, with all your tips. I do have a 120 fin drive, with my new J2 Bixpy PP-768 motor. Next year I will add my Xi3. But the PFD, bilge pump, FF/GPS, emergency tool kit. Basically I have everything needed on my kayak, for any on water repair, or camping on some island, if I ever had to wait for help. Even 3 day's minimal, but a warm fire, water, snacks, a small tarp, first aid kit. It's mother nature's ocean, she's beautiful but can also be dangerous. Even though now you'd be rescued quickly, but I see so many people out there like nothing will ever go wrong. Awesome vid.. 🛶 🎣 🌊
Just got my 136 Ghost and this video is exactly what I needed to watch. Thanks!
@Rad Reeling Fishing... I've had the same issue and it leads me to wonder why we need the door. I don't use the Kayak without the motor and if the kayak is in use then the motor is plugged into both locations. Why not do away with the door. It's a plug. Nothing should get in there if your storing the yak. Nothing can get in if y our using it because the plug is in it. Just a thought.
Wow lots of great information! I just purchased this kayak looking forward to getting on the water soon.
Ugh I was just stuck out on the water, made it back in and now searching for the issue. I unplugged replugged everything EXCEPT the female plug to the battery. I’m really hoping it was what you found during all of your troubleshooting. Too dark and too many mosquitoes to give it a go now but 🙏🏻 Hopefully tomorrow morning! Thank you!
Right, by pass everything and plug directly into the battery. I had an issue with the battery box lid fuse and had to get a new lid, also at one point had to replace the socket in the front and the cord on the motor with plug. Old Town is great at trouble shooting issues, and they generally pick up on the call right away.
Thanks for the great tips. I am going to get a kayak. Do u recommend old town? If so 120 or 136. Great tip
I've only used the 120 and I love it! It would be nice to have the additional room the 136 has.
Never said anything about connecting the kill switch to your PDF.
oh, good point!
Great tips, thanks for sharing the wisdom JC
Buenos Dias, JC. lol I did that once (ran over line) ,,, ok or twice. The worst was in a high wind, storm and heavy tides. Was a struggle trying to maneuver out of mangroves enough to finally put motor down. whew.. I've also rocked my world several times with the fast take off. Haven't figured out why I have to wait till the last possible minute to pull up the motor... I don't do that much any more.
Hey JC. just going back watching tonight before bed. Be sure to download the phone app to back up your remote control for the battery. Great backup.
I'll keep my ol paddle yak and let you all have the headaches of those POS yaks...more tech you have the more problems you'll end up with....
My tried an true spotlock is an anchor and drift sock...
Some Great Tips, Appreciate the Heads up on a few things I didn’t really think about. Tight Lines!
Is the 106 sportsman minn kota not having auto pilot, annoying to the point where I’m just going to want to upgrade to the autopilot? Or is easy enough to keep it in place?
If you do a lot of fishing where you'd be anchored in one spot (especially in deep water or medium current) then the AutoPilot is the way to go for sure. It's by far the best all around kayak. The 106 Sportsman Powered By Minn Kota is great, but if you're anchoring in current a lot it's extra work for sure. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps.
@@RadReelingFishing thanks for replying. You helped a ton. Going with the autopilot for sure.
Great tips JC for my Old town mk106s - I purchased a spare prop, shear pin, and washer for each
Another great video with useful safety info - Thanks JC! Stay safe & well. 👍👍
Thank you so much for sharing. I am considering buying a 120 autopilot. I bet I have watch a 100 videos, yours is the only one to have mention these very important safety considerations. Great job!!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
There is an extra sheer pin in the safety key that you plug in to the side of your kayak to complete the electrical connection. You can also use that key to to take out or put in the nut that hold the propeller.
Super safety tips. Thank you for sharing.
good info.
you have the hockey puck installed right? i don't have...yet.. but...
when i am on spot lock. it stays on the spot, however....the kayak goes in circle. why does it do that? how can it stay to the heading/direction where i want pointed and not move when i have it on spot lock? thanks...
Thanks for watching. I do not have the hockey puck installed. The bow of the kayak will always face into the wind or current depending on which is the strongest when using spotlock. If there is not a forceful wind or current pushing on the bow then the kayak is going to move around in different positions.
Great advice. That spot lock / level 10 situation is definitely how I’ll eventually fall out 😂
Thanks for watching. I literally almost fell out today on level 8. I told myself out loud that I needed to go and watch my safety video again, ha ha...
What life jacket do you recommend? I want something comfortable to wear
Onyx or one from Old Town
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Awesome stuff dude
I'm curious about your kayak battery. How much power does it supply? Some batteries list amp hours and some list the MCA. Either answer would be fine. Thank you.

@@RadReelingFishing Thank you so much. I really enjoy your channel. I discovered it only a couple of months ago but it's fast becoming my favorite fishing source.
Great videos I just order a 136
J C any snook on the beach yet
Great tips!
Good to know
Had a question what happens to your fishing gear and stuff when the kayak tipped over
I've never tipped over in any of my Old Town kayaks. Sorry, I can't answer that with accuracy.
I never thought it would take a rocket scientist to figure out where stuff will end up if it doesn't float....
