My top two takeaways were 1: It’s good to have all your places in a small radius. I used to live in Lake Charles, LA, and it wasn’t a lot of scenery, but everything was in a 2-mile radius. My apartment, my job, my morning gas station where I got my coffee (it was good for me), my gym, Jason’s Deli or most restaurants I wanted to go to. It was nice. 2: You put forth the same effort to make 10k per month as 100k, etc. It’s just different allocations of time. I never knew this, and this gives a bit of hope, as sometimes you feel like you are so far away from these lofty goals it’s hard to keep pushing. I guess it’s all about scaling and building momentum.
I love the fact that you are sitting in the same room now. Also it will be so cool to see how the setup will improve over time. So as always, here are my three biggest takeaways: [12:10] For anyone who is moving or changing their surrounding: Optimize for what you are doing most often (gym, groceries, business) in a small radius and view everything else (beach, restaurant, etc) as outliers (that you don't visit that often). [18:53] Don’t make the mistake of over-investing into branding at the beginning and INSTEAD: validate the problems that you are solving first (along with the category). [26:08] The further you come along inside your business, the more often you will have to ask yourself WHO (is going to do that) and NOT HOW (am I going to do that)? This will free up time for you to do other (more lever-moving) tasks and reduce the risk around yourself as being the main driver of the business (just like Dickie and Cole).
Planning a double man cave hyped on double espresso! What fun! What a great container to energize for growing the business. Love, love, the idea of hosting artists for Art Basel! You don’t realize how brilliant that is and how much exposure it could give you in other markets. Think of all the people in Miami you might never have a reason to meet or contact whom you could invite. As for branding I suggest you consider doing the high contrast, moody, dark photographs like the one of Cole with the ripped blue jeans. Eye-catching and memorable. And to flip this back on you, reflect on what your future selves in two years would wish you had considered when you were building out the studio? That will probably give you some great direction. I would call it a studio opening, not a housewarming. Congratulations!🎉
Traditionally a new ship has a christening where you break a bottle of champagne on the bow. Perhaps we just “pour some out” at the Shipyard Christening 2023 🚢🍾
Awesome, pumped for you guys! Always love hearing about what you're working on/ thinking about. Can't wait to see what you build your first Shipyard into
Your future Shipyard locations would be an amazing creative co-working space concept to franchise - I know I'd love a studio I can drop in on and record podcasts that is set up specifically for creators. 🤩
Congrats with the sparkly new space! This is fantastic Dickie and Cole 🎉 Both of you are onto great things, especially potential collaborations with other creative entrepreneurs. I watched Neistat from the very beginning of YT career, documenting all the ups and downs of this rise to the top. Y'all are the next gen churning out ideas with compounding ROI. Build, test, analyse, iterate, trash or grow it -> double-down. Cheers and journey well with the wind at your back!
Such a different dynamic when you're both sitting in the same space. You're like two little kids, giggling and getting excited about shit. Refreshing! The idea of collaborating with other creators to help you build other things is definitely appealing. You can only go so far alone. As a Filmmaker I can totally see your point about the production value of a well composed, stylised and clear video direction. Your reference to Chris Williamson is a good one. Design wise, you should have a shipping container of some sorts built in somewhere in your set. Like a phone booth or something!
Dickie was talking about having founders podcast playing as “ambient music” while he’s working. That’s exactly how I’ve been doing with these Espresso Hours. I ended up listening to each multiple times, but i catch different things that are relevant to my frame of mind there and then.
Hope there's still room for the cohort! Here are my three takeaways: #1. The educational business model is more challenging than it appears. Any advice given should be specific to this type of business due to its complexity. #2. Effective branding is crucial as it reflects your commitment and effort in building what you aspire to create. While speed matters, taking time for careful planning around your brand also matter. #3. Organic content is the new paid advertising department. It's a form of content-based promotion that doesn't require upfront payment but can generate significant revenue in the long run. Thanks as always, guys!
Please fill those shelves with ship 30 merch! Captains hats, t-shirts, branded journals, coffee cups with “it’s a niche not a marriage decision” or “moonlight on the water” or (many) other cole and dickie-isms. I can see the great design now!!!
Bare studio? No furniture? And you STILL shipped a podcast?! Reminds me of the story of 2 Fisherman learning to fish!

For some reason, the empty space seems like an interesting vibe for the podcast. Congrats on the Shipyard guys !!
so excited for you guys!

Congrats Cole and Dickie! Can't wait to start this cohort and someday get to know the Shipyard.

Congrats! I'm excited to see how this space evolves. Love watching you build

Congrats on the new office.
Keep going both of you.
😊
I would love to see a cost analysis of everything once it’s all built out! 👍
