- Bruce Lee: The Lost Interview is the name given to the 9 December 1971 edition of The Pierre Berton Show, which featured actor Bruce Lee in his only English speaking television interview.[1] Its title is derived from its status; it was presumed lost for several years until its rediscovery and airing on 2 November 1994. Over the course of the interview, which was filmed in Hong Kong, Bruce Lee and Pierre Berton discuss Lee's career, various aspects of martial arts philosophy and the inherent problems faced by an Asian in pursuing stardom in Hollywood. A review of the interview by Bill Stockey claims that Bruce Lee's "human side is exposed and he is portrayed as more approachable"
The mere fact that he learned English in just a few short years and then be able to articulate and translate extremely abstract & complicated concepts into layman’s terms is insanely impressive.
@Lavon H Actually, only a very small percentage of people in Hong Kong can speak English well. Their knowlege of English is akin to Americans’ knowledge in Spanish and Canadians’ knowledge in French. We see French language posted all over Canada but the majority cannot speak or even understand it.
Excellent point. Bruce was able to express himself in a more articulate fashion than some native speakers, again, it's doubly impressive because of the abstraction and complexity of the subject matter.
lmao, you never search Bruce lee on google? First thing you gonna read is that he graduated in Philosophy in Florida USA, which means he is very well experienced in english.
He was born in the US, then he moved to China. Then back to US in high school. Also his mother was half white. But yes his ability to express himself transcended language.
Wrong. Bruce are from hong kong....official language are english
“Running water never grows stale”
I like that!
Man I’m forever a fan. Bruce lee didn’t just fight but his whole philosophy is just amazing. True icon
He is - and will always be - one of my top heroes.
Thanks to Bruce Lee I'm looking at the moon.
Lol why
@@grasshoper3770 'It is like a finger pointing a way to the moon. Don't concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all that heavenly glory.' - Bruce Lee, 'Enter the Dragon'.
I know exactly what you are saying Brother!
He is one of the most influential person in the history I think. Just the way he talks....
he isnt one of the most influential person, he is the only influential person in history
He is the legend
@@demolution325 sounds good. So truth. The whole world loves him.
Jesus Christ tops this guy by a million miles

Bruce lee’s potential and life is carried on in so many peoples lives such as all the people that use his advice to be better versions of themselves. He truly is a legend🙏🏻
He is so fast and articulated
He isn't given credit for how hard he worked to be able to express himself this way in english.
Hasnt he been in the us since he was like 18 ? Pretty normal if u make effort to settle in right?
he had an american wife, he acted in English as well, he was born in San Francisco..
@@gruveinca He'd still lived most of his life in Hong Kong, though.
He dont have to do any effort to speak in english because he born in san francisco USA
@@luisperez1709 He was born in San Francisco in 1940, but he and his family moved to Hong Kong in 1941.
His level of consciousness is rare, especially for now days
Thank You Bruce Lee. He has changed my life with both his philosophy and wisdom. He was so ahead of his time in so many regards from martial arts, breaking racial barriers in film and television, his films he made in Hong Kong, and his philosophy. I wish he was alive today to see the impact he has had on our world in the years and decades since his death.
Bruce Lee has so many great quotes and sayings. But this is probably one of my favorites. Above all I'm hoping to actualize myself and be an artist of life.
Thank you for everything you accomplished Bruce. You have truly made the world a better place by your presence. You will always live on and be in our hearts.
Happy 80th birthday, Master Bruce.

@@andretvo I learned something new today. Thank you! Didn't know that term.
Still in 2020👑 #EternaLBruce
He has a poet’s spirit. Great interview..
I adore his humble ways.
LOVE this interview. I have it on an old DVD special feature and have watched it more times than I can possibly count. Words from the master. So precious, cause so few clips exist of Bruce just, talking. As himself.
Would you happen to know what DVD that is? 🙏🏽
you can tell the interviewer or the "act" from the powers position did not care about what Bruce Lee had to say. They did not want big brother to preach. Rest Easy King
That's exactly what I was thinking. Especially right at the end. He asked him a question and then immediately said "WE GOTTA GO!" when Bruce started to answer. I found that to be pretty disrespectful
Yes some degree of bias and disrespect. But if u watch u can see the interviewer kind of overwhelmed/surprised at Bruce's answers. I dont think he planned for the interview to be like this.
“It’s very un-western; this attitude” then goes to break lol so narrow minded.
I was thinking the same. Vintage hosts are soo terrible.
I saw it too. He cut Bruce Lee off during several of his answers. Bruce couldn't even get the full expression of himself across. I hate that the interviewer kept making everything about east and west. Even going so far as putting limitations like Bruce needed to choose between the two. Who cares???! That's not the essence of what Bruce Lee is even talking about. They should have given Bruce Lee more time in this interview instead of rushing him through the whole thing.
I would've loved to have a one on one sit down with Bruce Lee...this man was indeed a pure inspiration to all
Bruce Lee was and still is to this day amazing to watch and to talk about. Not enough words can fully express how much Bruce Lee means to me personally.
When the pandemic first began, I was watching quite a bit television then I happened to see a commercial for a ESPN 30 for 30 about Bruce Lee called Be Water. I was like cool this sounds awesome, I watched it the night it debuted on ESPN. And afterwards it changed my life. Watching that doc made me fully understand appreciate who Bruce Lee was as a person. And the hardships and adversity he had to go through with racism in Hollywood and being alone by himself in America in his early years and trying to make a living for himself.
What I respect the most about Bruce Lee was his philosophies, his philosophies on life are truly something to be read and to be inspired by. He really was ahead of his time when talking about concepts such as self actualization, being like water, expressing yourself for who you are etc. No other celeb of his era or even til now was preaching messages like this.
I truly do wonder as a fan of Bruce Lee. How much different our world 🌎 would be with him still here. What would he would think about the state of the U.S., Current events etc. But I'm sure he would still be telling us to express ourselves and to keep flowing like water. And to always expand our minds to reach new creative Plateaus to make new mountains and valleys for ourselves.
To Bruce thank you for changing the world, and by making a difference through your passions of martial arts and philosophy. And for kicking down the doors for all Asians Americans for representation in both film and television.
Thank you Bruce for making a difference in my life. Your wisdom means so much.
Sincerely,
Zuriel
When I listen Bruce speak is like listening a man without time. His words was too a head in his time and will rest for a lot actually leaders person, still to a head. I would rest to listen him for days never tired to learn from him..
6:30 lighting fast from a seated position, and look at how intense he gets with a brief explanation...I wish there was more content of Bruce truly a real definition of martial arts
Absolutely one of my favorite interviews ever! Love this man, rest in peace Bruce
Martial arts is Art. It is all about expression through human body/spirit. As a musician, I can relate to a lot of what he talks about, even though it is a different outlet. Very inspiring.
to this day, nearly 60 years later, i study his films and try to put pieces of his philosophy together. his martial arts skills were incomparable at the time, and he innovated action films. people should study how he implemented his philosophy in his films... once you understand that, his movies are so much better.
There is an excellent book by John Little called the Warrior Within that brings the main pieces of Bruce Lee’s philosophy together. I am currently listening the audiobook of it. Really inspiring!
He showed the whole world to be respectful and love each other. He is a king always!
He was a good looking guy.
His voice is hypnotizing.
Specially dedicated to David Lee ~ BE _clean_ WATER my friend . . . !! ;).
It's a real shame that the interviewer, better say showman, interrupted abruptly the interview just in the most interesting moment !!! TO BE CONTINUED . . . ❤️❤️❤️
Such a shame I agree. Especially since this is basically his only interview and I love to hear him talk uninterrupted.
This interviewer was extremely close minded and didn't care at all about the philosophy of such an inspiring man
For real! I was wondering if anyone was going to talk about how this guy is so out of touch and just “oh yea westerners have a very different view anyway”
He knew we would be watching he didn’t let it phase him, he knew a lot of people were closed minded but still had a great attitude.
I wouldn’t be able to tolerate it the way he does
Bruce Lee one of the greatest legend of all time
This is really worth listening to all the way through.
Why don't we have this level of discourse in 2024?
He knew and excepted something so early in life that takes most people a lifetime to know. Himself.
The 60's were lit. John Lennon, Bruce Lee, etc...
Couldn’t find the ego within him. Rip Bruce Lee
What a dynamic and radiant man! So much integrity!
He is the Legend still alive
This was A Beautiful Soul Indeed!
You cut one of the most important parts out of this interview..... When he speaks about teaching his students to express themselves in combative form, he also speaks about un natural - naturalness. Aka. Yin and Yang. Easily one of the most important parts of this interview
Thank you for uploading this.
Sir Bruce was to Deep for the syntheticism of Western Culture 💯 #KING👑✊🏼
It was wonderful to see him so happy and talking about martial arts with such passion
Since 2008 - when I first encountered this BRILLIANT ! Inter View - I recite this scene as my daily Mantra. The essence of Life
The setting fits the essence of Bruce Lee - all essential.
Bravo!
Excellent!
Wow I remember watching some of his movies in the 90s when I was little and untill today I never heard his voice before 🙏🏼🤴🏻❤
In Enter The Dragon if you’ve seen that it’s his real voice all the other ones were translated
The internet really is a blessing
I can’t wait to see Ang Lee’s Bruce Lee biopic that’ll star Mason Lee (Ang Lee’s son).
Because of Bruce's accent many think that Bruce struggled to learn English, but not at all, his mother was a Caucasian woman from California and he was born in California. . He finished High School in the USA and went to college.
His mother was part Caucasian from Hong Kong. That’s not controversial. But she was not full Caucasian nor from California.
He was born in San Francisco because his father was touring in the states with his opera troupe.
@@stanleycen yeah you're right, I honestly don't know how long he stayed in San Francisco after he was born , did he go to an international school in Hong Kong??
@@carlosvelasquez9922 he probably was brought back to Hong Kong very quickly after his birth. I’m not a 100% sure what schools he went to in Hong Kong. But I do remember him or people he knew at the time mentioning problems he had with the Caucasian children he went to school with. So the schools he went to may have been international ones, or prestige schools that the Caucasian people living in HK would send their kids to. Not sure though.
Obnoxious interviewer, Bruce was great though.
One of the first and original action movie actors.
bruce lee loves speaking cantonese
Thank you for this!
Thank you for this.
You can see why this man is a legend. A true legend.
Bruce Lee was a unique and special individual with so many talents. He was far more than a gifted exponent of martial arts. It is heartbreaking that he never had the opportunity to fulfil his true potential. We can only guess about what he would have done, but I think he would have surprised us all.
Great inspirational man a true hero to all
Watching n Listening to Bruce Lee on Overcoming Limits Helped Me Fight My Way Out of a Wheelchair n Walk Again after Car Smash.. Used to Love Watching Dragon the Bruce Lee Story..Need to Find That Strength Again Before it's Too Late.. RIP Bruce Thankyou for Trying to Share Your Truth Xx
Blessed is The Eternal Creator Of the Heavens and Earth
This is beautiful
But also I think that the interview ended very quickly
He gotta say more, He wanted say more; wow this is just amazing, The Eternal allowed him to do all the things that he, Bruce Lee did, all the things that Bruce knew and expressed, all of that was for a reason
Could be a very real example and inspiration to all of us to know and do.
I don't know at all yet if I expressed myself in the right way, I mean, If I expressed myself correctly, I'm learning English, I want to be able to understand and communicate with other people, and of course the other people understand me =D
Hugs for everyone♡
Stay focused, take care my friend
Blessings from Above to everyone
And like we say in my land, in my country: Camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente.

also, a great book for anybody who is into bruce lee is the book written by Matthew polly. that book was so in depth, talking about bruce from his childhood to his death.
I bought and read the book thanks to your comment I didn't know it had come out and for the life of me couldn't remember where I heard of it and accidentally came across this again damn near a year later just wanted to say thank you!
You’re welcome!
Rude, disruptive interviewer, disrespectful to the Wisdom that was coming forth, but Thankfully we've still received it well. Sad how certain people don't want you to be genuinely authentic!
13:01 Glad that "The Warrior" finally became the TV Show that Bruce wanted to make in his time. Can't wait for Season 3.
Be Water My Friend ! ❣️
we all miss you bruce lee
Interviewer : Me,me,me,me,me .
where bro?
I like how he keeps his sense of humor, makes some jokes. There's some video on here of Bruce Lee successfully playing high level table tennis with nune chucks (spelling?) That's all you need to know about this man's hand-eye-coordination. And, pound for pound, he's probably the greatest fighter to ever live.
That video is fake lol there are other videos that show a lil bit of his speed and power
@@ChrisPBacon-bl9rv lol yeah it is fake but it was a promotional add I think. But credit to Bruce Lee he is a talented/ philosopher and martial artist.
A true master
Amazing Interview but it has never been lost.
For Mr. Lee to keep his head and speak with good humor to this clown is testament to his mastery.
I believe that the interviewer is not being rude, I do however believe that the interviewer knew exactly what Bruce was speaking of, (THE SECERT) and didn’t want him to share it with the world. LEGENDARY STATUS
Had Bruce lived he would’ve been on Carson, Mike Douglas show etc. It would’ve been great to see him do demonstrations on American TV.
RIP Bruce. 🙏🏻 🕯
Legend Forever...U live in us🙏
This is NOT the full version. but ty, great short. The KEY philosophy was cut completely out: deep & thorough explanation into Acting Unacting...; this concept changes lives over space and time.
"As a human being" thank you Bruce
I thought Bruce Lee was an American born. At least, that's what his biography says. When I check his biography it says he was born in San Francisco but raised in Hong Kong, now I know where he got his Hong Kong accent from...he's still American born.
Listening to him it now makes sense why he is the greatest!
So glad warrior became reality
He would have been an incredible Motivational Speaker
Love you Bruce lee may be you has be back again into this world…?!
Bruce was magic. Wish he lived longer
Bruce Lee is a timeless legend. This interviewer is really annoying and a tool. He isn’t really paying attention to Bruce’s comments.
Actually Pierre Berton is a great author so you should him at least a little respect
There should be a Bruce Lee holiday 🐉
9:31 is lit
Like everyone else, you want to learn the way to win, but never accept the way to lose, to accept defeat you need to learn to die; is to be liberated from it. You must Free your mind and learn the art of dying.
I don't believe in system, nor in method and without system, without method, what's to teach?"
I know the cause of my ignorance ! Liberate yourself from all kind of thoughts, be empty, be like water !
To liberate is to see, and then you'll know. Fight when you have to ,emotional content is what is needed. You have to adapt to any situation without thinking like water.
Bruce smoking that good bud biiihhhh 🔥💨💨💨
I too am simply a human being.
Making a pilgrimage to sifu’s grave this week I can’t wait
Be water my friend....sikkk.
R.i.p. Bruce Lee gee.
I love this man❤.
I love listening to this
R.I.Power Bruce, cool dude.
Poor Bruce.. he had his big struggles.. makes me cry.. I love Bruce.
I love that he concentrated on developing, go where his heart at and was very good for society, great example.. and still is.. and I hope always will be. Instead of hating racist people.. Bruce tried to understand them and win their hearts, he wanted to be part of humanity, Bruce used to be completely poor but he worked hard and got himself success and love more than he could imagine.
I prayed to JESUS to know where Bruce is now.. I got a dream, where JESUS and Bruce having a dialogue together.. and they looked at me and I woke up. Bruce Lee made it to Heaven, baby. Thank you, JESUS. I'll hug Bruce one day and I'll pick him up, he will be my neighbor in Heaven. In Heaven everybody is famous, you can meet anyone at any minute and everyone loving each other.. theres no bigger status lower status and ego like on earth.
Holy shit I never knew Bruce Lee never knew Mandarin. Most people I know born (or atleast childhood) in HK know both languages.
Maybe now, but not back then during British HK.
Nice...

Wow. Who knew quality interviewers existed at one point. Imagine this interview on the Jimmy Kimmel show...it’d be a disaster.
Yes :) had Bruce Lee not died he would probably have moved on to Europe or something.
