This Build Will Change the Way You Think About Cities Skylines 2! | MC #13

  • The success of the intermodal harbor has been a huge boon to Magnolia County and it's newest community Chairity Bay! And the residents of the community are ready to incorporate - which Governor Johnson has taken a keen interest in. However, her interests are not just with the community, but also the harbor, and she hopes to create a harbor district to own and maintain the harbor as the same time that the community incorporates.
This will eventually pass and Chairity Bay will make a number of key investments to shake its company town past. We'll use this as an opportunity to bend Cities Skylines 2 to our will in a build that just might change the way you detail in Cities Skylines 2. We'll make a custom city park, separate sub buildings from their main buildings, and create beaches and marinas with ease... with the help of a few mods and the developer mode.
This is a HUGE build, but it's a much needed improvement to the community. Enjoy!

Hey Phil! I see you are using a lot of low commercial of lower sizes, which all have some parking lots built in,
after a lot of trial and error, here are a few I found (which might require a bit of wack-a-mole)
    Width x Depth
4x6 NA low commercial - Has a nice gas pump AND station combo but requires a lot of wack-a-mole as a few restaurant-looking ones are in the same footprint
5x5 NA low commercial - Has a REALLY NICE strip-mall looking building without any parking. They look great next to eachother for a shopping area surrounding a parking lot!
5x5 EU low commercial - Has a decently looking building for a road corner.
4x6 EU low commercial - Has a decent warehouse-ish building with loading docks on its side
There are also a few wider but shallow buildings which are decent, like 6x3, 5x3, 6x4.
Overall, I've found while I hate anything 4x4 or under, as soon as you hit 5 or 6 in a direction, they actually look much better and most of them don't have awkward parking on the asset!
    Hope this helps!

Hey Phil! Just an fyi regarding the Add Object menu from the dev mode - if you just press the same button that you used to open in, it will hide the menu, then you can use the same button again to open it. That avoids the issue of closing the menu with the 'X' and not being able to use it again. Hope that makes sense!
For everyone else reading this comment, please give it an upvote 👍 so we can help save Phil from having to save and reload his game every time he wants to use the Add Object menu 😅

I find it strange the High School doesn't have road access to its own stadium. If a student gets injured, service vehicles would have to drive through the harbor which is the only road access. @@CityPlannerPlays One of my favourite local bridges is down on what used to be industrial land at the local port... a lifting bridge that connected two areas of the waterfront for both trucks and rail. These days, the industry is long gone... the bridge is now pedestrian only, serving as a major link between what are now two major hospitality areas.
Sadly, it doesn't move anymore. It was an ingeniously simple mechanism - just a well-balanced counterweight and a tiny motor - and I remember being captivated by it as a child. There's no need for a lifting bridge there nowadays, it being too small for most of the modern boats to fit through, but I do with they could keep it in working order.

At least in QLD Australia when old stretches of track got decommissioned most of it wasn't ripped out until the private land owners did it.
Old industrial areas sometimes have rails to nowhere, so you could keep the rails at the back of the buildings but just cut it and remove what the state is actually willing to pay to remove.

There’s a few issues that I have with today’s build that I just can’t ignore. It’s quite ridiculous that a student, parent, etc would need to leave the school campus to drive between the highschool and its stadium. A direct road should be connecting the two instead of driving through the harbor where the school traffic may impact the work day of the harbor, etc. Also the marina needs a boat ramp. A couple of other nice add ons would be parking lots for the buildings next to the post office and more dense trees between the highschool and harbor to help with air and noise pollution.

Even for an artificial beach with imported sand, the beach area isn't looking super convincing to me, I'd make it a longer terrace hugging a lower contour line, separated from the grassy shore by (sorry!) a slight ledge. I'm getting flashbacks to when Weymouth imported hundreds of tons of dredged sand to zhoosh up their seafront for the Olympics, only for an April storm to immediately sweep it out to sea and create a navigation hazard offshore! Speaking of seafront development, call me European but the little commercial strip by the marina would look amazing with some medium-density mixed-use, idk if the lot sizes will be right though, and I'd feel sorry for the folks in the cheap apartments on the retaining wall side. Maybe down the line as the harbour grows and changes, and IDK how realistic it would be for a Superior port, I'll have to look over my old photos from Duluth.
Re: "The students won't care about the water treatment plant," I spent some of my teens in the town of Shepton Mallet in Somerset, which was known county-wide as S**t'n'Smellit for the row of water treatment works laid out along the western approach to town. I guarantee it's going to go down in the student mythos as something like Sewerview High, if not among Chairity Bay students then definitely among students from Mineral Hills!

Having the stadium right next to the sewage treatment was questionable. All visiting teams and spectators are immediately going to see and smell it during games. Also, having a school zone and playground so close to industrial and sewage treatment might cause (or at least be perceived as) detrimental to children's health.
The students might not care, but the staff, faculty, and PTA probably will.

Also with the beach, the sand wouldn't really go all the way up to the road. They'd be separated by either pavement or grassy areas, and thats where some changerooms, toilets and seafood shops (fish and chips) would be.
Mariner definitely needs parking too, that was my biggest thought watching that. Not sure if theres the right assets in game but if I were Phil, I'd delete a few of those commercial assets until they look like tackle shops and/or seafood resturaunts.

Hey just wanted to say that as they are the breakwaters do a poor job of protecting the marina. Ideally their ends should overlap. So in this instance (as seen at 48:08) you could remove the angled part of the left breakwater and extend the right one so it goes past the left one, leaving one small opening to the left. I hope that makes sense!

49:11 Love this level of detail!! The more detail the better. I also enjoy seeing what mods are out there since I can’t the play the game myself. As a food truck owner, I definitely cringed at the number of trucks you placed in the food truck court. There is likely not enough business there for 14 trucks on a normal day. I could see the marina hosting events that would require that many but 4-6 on a normal day would feel much more reasonable to me. Great video as always, though.

Phil I love the level of detailing and don’t think you should stop doing that! One possible change though! What about having some mixed use buildings in the little harbor you made with all the commercial and offices. It seems like that would be a place for some high class condos or something! Either way great video and loving the story!

Hi Phil, I'd probably consider adding sloped paths from the marina up to the giant quay so people don't have to walk all the way around it to access it. I know this probably isn't that realistic and would be better if we had access to stairs.

Hi Phil! Incredible build, as always! One thing I would consider changing is the road access to the parking lot near the stadium. I undestand prioritizing pedestrian movement, but to me it feels weird that one has to drive through that industrial area in the harbor to reach it, rather than having a direct access via (what I think is) 2nd Street. Cheers from Brazil!!

Sweet build segment! You mentioned the snow not sticking to dev mode surfaces. I just imagine that football field is heated, or that sidewalk is shovled etc. If you look at the cars driving around town when there is snow the windshields are completely covered with snow. Snow not sticking to some areas is as realistic as people driving around with zero visibility because of the snow on their car windshields. Just my 2 cents worth.

I think you should change up the location of that parking lot for the high school. That high school has a capacity of 800 kids not to mention admin. That’s roughly 850-900 people and probably around 75% of them will use that parking lot everyday. That road is way to close to a major intersection and in real life that intersection would be hell to drive through from around about 0700-0900 and 1400-1600 every weekday. Would probably cause lots of students to be late to class in the morning and would probably take the average person at least 30 minutes just to get out of the parking lot after school. Especially with the homes there, having that little cluster of homes being in the same cul-de-sac as the high school parking lot would likely make those residents unhappy

Just for your information, the smokestack port addition is created the wrong way. You should never have a water cul-de-sac with the flow going into it. It would be a catastrophe if there is a flood. Extra water with nowhere to go other than into your port district. Still, this is just a game. ;)
Also, I'm wondrous that Charity Island isn't just a huge factory site. That's usually what happens next to river or sea ports. Huge industries. If the assets were there, I'd do an enormous metals factory with furnaces and pilles of copper, coal and other minerals, creating huge cables for power and rail companies.
One day, we'll be able to.

The lookout point seems really nice. You can sit there, watching the giant cargo ships roll in, while listening to the soothing sounds of the quarry directly behind you.
Speaking of which, I used to live in a small town with a large cargo port. I lived in an apartment block on the other side of town, but you could still hear the noise from the port despite it being about 1 km away. The night sky was always a beautiful sodium orange.
I don't know that I would want to live as close to the MC port as the residential areas you've built, if I had any choice in the matter.

The high school stadium receiving just a bit of air pollution from the water treatment plant area feels pretty realistic somehow; gov probably isn't going to be ceded the best land area in that deal... I'm getting some pretty decent "Tacoma Aroma" vibes. I love the idea of the school running with this and having some sort of waste-eating bacteria as their mascot. Go Chairity Bay Stinkers!!
Big +1 to Marina parking. Also like the idea of finding a way to get a scenic walkway down the quaywall somehow, but I get that may be hard with the current state of mods.
As for what mods to use and dev/anarchy vs. vanilla, I personally watch for the story, attempts at realism (love the actual city planning info!), and to get a kick out of comparing someone else's building style to my own. CS1 was all about having a mountain of quality of life mods, I say do what you can to reduce friction and make creating these amazing videos as painless as possible!

hey CPP! absolutely loving the build so far, your first episodes on CS2 were how i found your channel and this series in particular is such a showcase for your skills and design sensibilities!
something i think might fit well into Magnolia County is a park inspired by Vollrath Park in Sheboygan! it's basically an all grass oval-shaped amphitheater right on Lake Michigan that is home to both graduation ceremonies and a disc golf course. it's actually got an interesting history that you could draw from too - the plot of land was once the site of the secluded mansion of wealthy local industrialist Jacob Vollrath. in 1912 the house caught fire and was destroyed, and the Vollrath family would then turn the land over to the city in memory of Jacob (who had died years before the house burned down). in its early years the park contained a man-made lagoon, as well as a zoo that was founded mostly because people just kept bringing exotic animals to the park for some reason. most people in town don't even know the zoo ever existed! where most people now see just some grassy bowl to hang out in has some hidden layers to it that reflects both the history of the industry which had defined the Sheboygan area and still leaves its legacy throughout the county as well as now-forgotten little oddities
i could imagine some elements of this story could find their way into being elements of a beautiful custom park which provides a scenic view of the water, as well as inspiration for fleshing out the region's history and adding some character to the region!
if you read this CPP thank you for all the work you put into making these videos, as well as for helping put this homesick cheesehead's soul at ease everytime you pronounce drag with that wonderful long A :)

Don’t forget to assign Charity Bay schools and services; Fire, Police to cover districts intended. Also as an Australian I’d like to see even a man made beach respect topography so sand is at lest a half meter below key walled road or raised path and grass edges perhaps 1/4 meter higher, to help prevent sand blowing over road or parkland in a stiff onshore breeze (or tornado) pick up. Finally whilst dev mode assets menu is open a few waste bins in parks or the harbour fast food plaza should help people keep the place tidy.
