- Special guest Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar, sits down with Angus MacKenzie, Ed Loh, Kim Reynolds and Jonny Lieberman to talk about the new Jaguar F-Type and the inspiration behind the new two seater. The completely new roadster, arguably Jaguar's first pure bred sports car in decades, pays homage to the spirit of the E-Type of the '60s and '70s and features a range of powertrain options; from a 340-hp 3.0L supercharged V-6 to a 5.0L supercharged V-8 making nearly 500 horsepower.
The crew also discusses the challenges of balancing engineering with design, and the safety regulations and legal limitations that need to be factored into designing a car.
Wide Open Throttle appears every Thursday on the Motor Trend channel.

This is the best looking car under $150K, in my opinion. Gorgeous! Excellent video, too.
That's great to hear! We're glad our conversations and debates helped inform your decision-making process. Hope you're loving your C-Class!
I drove the F-Type & it does sound amazing! Glad the sound question was answered!
Ian Callum is one of the best car designers.
If I could buy any one new car on the market right now, it would be the F-Type. I don't know how to describe this car than to say it's elegantly aggressive. Right now this tops anything from Aston Martin in design. That rear end! Good Lord! You see the Jaguar heritage so much in the design but it is also completely its own. Well done, Ian! I love your emphasis on a tactile interior. MT, thanks again for another great WOT!
Great video. Didn't even feel like a 14 minute video because it was so informative. Great work
Thanks Genome. We try to cover and share a wide variety of automotive topics and genres, with the hope that this channel can connect with and bring together all enthusiasts. For us, just the fact that you're enjoying shows outside your core interests is a beautiful thing.
That's a great question and something we'll be sure to pose in future discussions with designers. Thanks for the suggestion!
Jaguars have some of the most appealing designs. THey are so recognizable
Years ago, when I was coordinator on the then Jaguar engine line in Ford of Cleveland's engine plant #2,I had a conversation with a young Jag engineer. I was quick to find that we were both a couple of corner monsters. I spoke with him about building a new version of the old C type. No big trunk for golf clubs, etc. I'd like to think the F type came out of that conversation in some small way. I does make me think of the old car in certain ways. Nice!
We absolutely will. Keep letting us know who you'd like to see and we'll work on getting Bob Lutz.
I actually enjoy watching the WOT videos, it's great seeing discussion being made with people who are ultimately involved in the car industry
MotorTrend has become my go-to source for anything car/bike related. I especially love the production quality and professionalism displayed in every series. I even enjoy watching the ones I previously did not have an interest in. Keep up the top-notch work guys!
Ian is an absolute visionary. I grew up collecting and loving my Jaguar die-casts. The E-Type was my first one. I bought a brand new 2012 XF 5.0 last year, and it is easily the best sedan I've ever owned. I practically stopped driving my 2012 Audi A6 3.0T as a result - the Jag is simply a much more indulgent vehicle.
I'll be picking up an F-Type V8S Coupe, as Jaguar reps have informed me that an announcement for the coupe will be made later in the summer (MY2014) with an MT very likely.
Its lovely to see you guys with cups of coffee ...rather than beer...nice move motortrend.
Best designed sportscar in quite a while
Thanks-- that's great to hear!
I love Ian's designs, so much so I bought the F-Pace S for my wife and I got the F-Type R. Both are works of art.
Great vid MT! You keep on impressing me, I love it when you interview designers and engineers about the very cars they design and their personal view on the industry. Top quality vid! Thanks :)
Best Eps yet. Jaguar are on a winner here with there current line up of cars.
Yes, indeed. My schedule's packed with travel plans, so it's likely I'll miss our round table discussions for a while.
Jessi
I do miss Jessie but Angus is fantastic and brings a big car brain to the table. It was extremely pleasing to watch this. This style of discussion really draws me in as i love to know what goes into the cars in terms of overall mentality and vision.
There definitely needs to be two(2) WOT's. Formal like this and the informal with a beer or wine like it was with Jessie.
Brilliant video, especially with the Legend Ian Callum. The F-Type is an absolutely beautiful car, not only in terms of looks, but also sound. I am been blessed to be able to buy an F-Type in a couple of years, and cannot wait.
XJ220 still by far the best Jag that will ever exist.
I love this show, no other car focused channel puts so many quality videos like you guys.
Love the sport-cars that has great luxury. that's what Jaguar does best in my opinion.
To the peeps who thought this was boring, and the peeps who do not like car, you have poor taste. The video was great. Real insight into how Jag develops and designs. Havent you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes? The car looks fantastic. Never mind how it sounds or feels, I doubt any of you have driven it. I havent heard one auto journalist complain about it
Ian Callum and Ralph Gilles are two of my favorite automotive people
Hands down, MY FAVORITE RUclips SHOW!
Carlos has been on a couple of extended trips along with a much needed vacation to a place far far away. Don't worry, he's back and has been out shooting new episodes.
Keep getting great industry figures as guests on WOT. The episode with Ralph Gilles was especially good, and chatting with Ian Callum has to be a close second. Grab Bob Lutz for a future episode and you might have your best episode yet!
That's the bad kitty XFRS. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic looking car Ian!
I have officially watched to many Motortrend Videos w/ Corvette commercials. Now I am looking for a Corvette on Craigslist
The F-TYPE is certainly the best looking Jaguar design for quite some time. In point of fact, it recently bagged the '2013 World Car Design of the Year' award.
And judging by newly leaked patent drawings, the forthcoming coupe variant looks promising as well.
Im checkin' in daily to see what you guys upload and favourite. Great talks, great reviews and great show. I bought my C Class because of this show! :) would be awesome if you guys come to the Toronto Autoshow next year!
All the Jaguars are super nice lately, I think the XJ puts the 7 Series and the Lexus LS to shame in the design department, and the F-Type is gorgeous!!
The British guest sounds totally like Jason Stateham
wish you would put out an episode daily of this series
Waiting for the coupe , can't wait
Really nice vid. I´ve always liked Ian Callum´s designs. He seems to have a flair for creating modern cars that can hark back to the past while not being overly retro. I`d love to have more of these types of videos not only from designers but from engineers as well. Mike Cross would be someone I´d love to hear from.
I totally agree with his view of interior design (touch & feel of buttons).
Some manufacturers are using touchscreen to control everything, wich in a car, it doesn't make any sense!
Rode in the back of a new SWB XJ not so long ago, comfortable doesn't even come close to describe it.
Love these videos. So informative and in depth. Keep them coming.
That F-Type is just plain MEAN!! Great conversation in the video!!
Another excellent episode of WOT love the guest designer and I think having guest is a great idea, I think for your next guest should be Some one from GM or Ford that has a hand in designing or engineering the sports cars. Then maybe someone from Toyota or Honda.
Great video. The F type coupe will be incredible.
You guys should bring in Hennessy to talk about the Venom GT and their attempt at the world record. Can't wait to see an American car on top!
Yep you are right, I have one!
speak for yourself. i personally enjoy learning about one car at a time and hearing what the designers/engineers of that car have to say about it.
Such a beautiful car
Three questions for Mr. Callum who is an awesome man btw.
When is the F Type coupe coming?
Will it have a manual?
What is the insistence with the black C pillars on the XJ?
if I had the money I'd definately buy one
Very interesting. Thanks.
the first jaguar i think looks amazing
The F-type is a beautiful automobile.
That looks badass
True! Alot like the z8
I'm listening to what I think is a very good conversation with soothing accents between Ian and Angus...
...then Jonny speaks. Thumbs up in representing intellectual American accent dude :D
They complain about the safety regulations; but think about this - which car would you rather have ab 80 mph accident in? An E type or an F type. In the F, you'll probably walk away, in the E you'll probably leave in the corners van. That being said, the E is the most beautiful car ever made and I'd rather have an Eagle E than an F.
Keep it up MotorTrend.
Please bring us a Porsche guy for next time. I really wants to know if there will be a GT2 with a PDK Transmission.
Personally, I think they will not because they want to avoid producing a Carrera which can be faster than the Turbo S
Great! Mike cross would be a fun and informative video too.
Thks for these great videos
Better than /Drive talkshows ... and that is a complimant
My Old Man owns a 1959 Jaguar Mark 2 in my opinion it a beautiful car its just too bad it need a lot of work done to it.
You know I was just thinking that. :D It looks very similar to that red Dewbachee.
I don't think Ian Callum is a car guy....it really shows
Motortrend, I feel really about about Jessie Lang since she owns this show, can you guys just make a another channel like Wide Open Discussion? And give this back to Jessie!
I guess you didn't hear that the F type will come with a manual in later versions... Really, now with most of the Germans and all of the Italians abandoning the Manual transmissions Jaguar is one of the last supercar/luxury automakers still retaining the manual gearbox.
"Aesthetics are hugely subjective and if there is no substance underneath"
As someone who has driven many supercars I can tell you about 90% of the supercars have a hell of a lot more than a pretty face underneath that beautiful body. But only a few would earn their place within the bay of my garage due their distinct characteristics. Their are not many "shallow" supercars alive in todays market. Only "Sane"-"Crazy" and everything in between.
oh damn, didn't even know they made an rs version of it haha
Mr. Callum seems like a great guy and certainly takes pride and joy in what he does. But, and there is always one in a comments section, I don't see the F-Type as the beautiful piece of automotive art that others do. It's decent looking, however, there is, to my eye at least, a disconnect in design between the rear and the rest of the car. The interior design leaves something to be desired as well. Yes, the seats and door panels look good, but the centre console looks terrible and rather cheap.
Ed Loh coughs out "McLaren" at 10:16. Lol priceless
Porche introduced the Cayenne years ago. Bentley, Lamborghini, and Maserati claim they will introduce SUVs or crossovers. Will Jaguar follow suit and was that what Mr. Callum was eluding to regarding expansion of the Jaguar line?
The craigslist bob one was pretty funny
Good interview!
Great video... but no coupe talk?
the best looking car is at 1:13
Yep, the new XFR-S
What kind of car is the blue one in the background?
Such an sexy, sexy car - Ian Callum knows his stuff!
I'd like to ask Mister Callum why they gave the exact same face to the XF than the XJ? Two nice cars but almost impossible to see wich is wich from the front (just fog lights differents). It's just ctrl C, Ctrl V. Even Audi don't just copy/paste at that point the design from a car to an other (I don't confuse an A8 and an A6). Please tell him if you see him again.
Those safety regulations are what ruined the Aston Martin Rapide's beautiful front end -__-
I have to say this, the Jag F-type looks close enough to a Ferrari California.
And I'm not bs ing. I'm a medical student at the top of my class and I plan on driving a 12c as my only car in the future. I like it because people will not know what it is. I will not have to face jealousy and envy because people will think I'm driving an MR2 or a lotus or something and I get to enjoy the best car in the world in my opinion. Everyday, whereas with a Ferrari, I have to drive a cookie cutter Mercedes or Porsche everyday instead to keep the haters off. So McLaren is perfect
What is that blue car in the background?
Cool man.
I'm no designer, hell I still draw stick figures. But I do wonder. Is it more difficult for someone like Ian Callum to work for a company such as Jaguar that has such a storied history with such attractive models, and stick to that design philosophy or is it harder to come up with something from scratch and completely original like they do at places like KIA? And no I'm not saying KIA's are as attractive as Jags.
I want to see the edited out stuff!
that would be a good car to buy for a graduation present.
I remember seeing him from Top Gear
1:11 - Not an XJ Motortrend. That's an X-Type.
Hey MotorTrend, I was wondering why I haven't been seeing as much Carlos Lagos. I thought his show, Ignition, was really one of the better ones on MotorTrend. Just looking for an honest answer. Thanks!
"What is that blue car in the background?" BLASPHEMER...
2013 Jaguar XFR-S
They hate on Mclaren because the engineers out weigh the designers. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it means the car should be better over all from a mathematical/scientific standpoint than the competition. But when it comes to supercars math and science isn't the motivator for most peoples choice. So many feel cars like this have no "soul".
Yes Motortrend stressed Ralph out but it turned out a great car and the car business is stressful so...
A coffee? What's going on with the MT team?
"A Jag should be Dramatic" ,this is where I disagree with Mr. Callum. The XJ should have drawn from the past instead of building a "pimpmobile". I just don't like it and that is the first time in my life I would not want a new XJ. Thankfully I can drive and look at my 87 series iii,and when a new Xj goes by look down at my burled walnut dash LOL. However I must say I love the F-Type but the XJ looks like an overfed stretched hamster with rapper wheels on it.
what is the blue car in the background?
nice looking..but by some ranked as one of the most dangerous cars ever to drive fast in
A long as someone sees a V8 pushed into the mid-rear position, low slug like body, wide stance they will most likely approach you. When they hear the exhaust they will approach you. The only cars I know that doesn't get you looked at for having money is high dollar Mercs(not the supercars like SLR and SLS), Audis, BMWs, Lexus, (old Bentley's and Rolls Royce), and old Jags. Most else gets you noticed in a hurry and the attention is not always the good kind.
