I am 62 years old and haven't thrown a pot since I was in college over 40 years ago. Your videos, including this one, inspire me to 'give it a go' again. THANK YOU!
You touched my heart with that video. Been a potter and psychotherapist for 30 years. “ you center the pot and the pot center you” so right in al its simplicity
I first met Simon in NY back on 2008-10. Being a Postmaster I was able to meet many interesting people during my time in the Post Office. Once I got hooked on Pottery, unfortunately our time together was short lived. He moved to PA and in 2010 I retired from the Post Office. I still continue to look at this videos daily and I cherish our moments together. Great video's and how-to comments on improving your pottery. Keep up the good work. Carlos
Me too, I'm counting on feeling the clay turn under my hands to get me back to normal, 8 years I haven't really thrown, but clay was in my life for 50 years before that. The wheel is going into my bedroom, the only place there's room for it here. It's already seen kitchens and livingrooms. I'll just make the most of feeling the clay turn and let it guide me, and maybe start making pots again, who knows! But I really need to find that "feeling" again. It's been too long. Thankyou so much for this video
I’ve finally found time to learn to pot, several attempts have been made but life and children seem to stop me, with COVID my husband has completed my little studio and At last I’m back on the wheel. Your videos are amazing, a joy to watch and so helpful in my progress as a pottery thank you . Kim
I know this video is over four years old but I just watched it and 2022. I started learning to throw three months ago I’ve come a long way. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and yes you are an inspiration. I wish I lived closer to you so I could go to one of your classes. But I don’t so I just have to watch and learn by trial and error. I am 64 years old and have some disabilities. Working with Clay has become my go to for mental relaxation. Who knows maybe one day I will get to meet you and learn. Thank you for what you have done. Keith Stevens
Nice to meet you, Simon! Lovely bio! It has been a real joy, gift and also a privilege to have learned so much from your generous youtube videos all these past ten years. I write this sipping my beloved morning coffee from my beloved Simon Leach cup! Thanks, also for that! I hope to see you again soon.
Absolutely fantastic. "You center the clay but the clay centers you" as well as "it's a healing to my being" well said my friend. I need to go make pots and heal
Fantastic video. I only just discovered you a few months ago. You have fired me up to get my wheel out after not throwing or working with clay for 10+ yrs. I have always LOVED this creativity but I have been a frustrated potter - I guess not having enough confidence! Thank you Simon for giving me a huge incentive to start up the wheel and get my hands back into clay! You are an inspiring potter and teacher.
What a great look into your pottery and your life. You talk about pottery the way I feel about pottery! Thanks for all the inspiration by your videos and yes ... I'll keep practising!!
Simon, I enjoy watching your videos so much! Unfortunately I don't have a wheel here and you're to far away from germany, for a workshop, but watching your videos is relaxing and brings me back to the basics :-) thank you
Thanks for this lovely and lovingly made film. The film reflects many of the qualities of craft in the pottery you produce, Simon. I feel the same love you have for working clay in the way the film maker is working their craft.
Simon, you are the reason why I personally felt able to take action into something I wanted to love, on my own! I never used a wheel before but had a little experience with pottery. Three months ago I didn't even have clay to work with, now Im creating my own and learning on my new wheel! I am saving up for a kiln, but until then I just keep PRACTICING (:
It was interesting to hear a little about your family's history with ceramics. Actually I originally found your channel while searching for videos relating to your grandfather's work with Yanagi Sōetsu and the Mingei movement. It sounds like his legacy lives on in your own making philosophy. Plus I love the line 'you centre the clay but the clay centres you', so true!
Nice to see how this evolved from being a kid surrounded by clay through well let's earn some money at dad's place to the dedicated pottery fever and self employment. The passion in your work ànd in your words is very special and inspiring! Thanks, Simon!
"getting away from all this tapping" ))))) that is funny, you were referring to computer tapping. ...but... I just saw your awesome video on centering where we do all this tapping on the pottery wheel. So about the wisdom you are talking about here, its actually very real in my life. There is this idea that it is emotionally and physically healthy to learn traditions of the past. I agree. I have lived without electricity and come to understand better the relationship with light and the day/night feeling. But about this comment comparing computer tapping and pottery tapping, there is a deep wisdom in the sameness of all things. The nature of realtiy is interdependence.
Wonderful! I love all your videos, your insight. One of the best quotes is "you center the clay and the clay center's you" I'm gonna make a sign like that for my studio! Thanks again Simon!
Loved the video, could have been longer. Think you need to do a full documentary some time Simon. Keep posting always an inspiration. I'm off to keep practicing.
Love all your helpful videos! Just wanted to point out that this video's setting don't enable it to play on your website (simonleachpottery.com). If you click edit on the video manager, then go to advanced settings, you want to check "allow embedding" for this video. Hopefully then it will let people watch it on your website as well. Just started "A Potter's Book" written by your grandfather if I'm not mistaken. It has been a very interesting read, these first few pages, and I look forward to reading the rest. Thanks for your informative videos and I'll continue to try and keep up with them!
Wat an interesting and beautiful video. I absolutely love your work and follow your videos closely. Just watching you throw makes me so excited that I want to go behind the wheel as well and create something. You’re an inspiration for beginner potters like me and I hope to meet you and do a private course with you sometime. What can I say I’m a huge fan!! And... I will keep practicing 😉
Loved this Simon. I am very new to throwing pottery; just start a 6 weeks ago. I am finding the truth in many of the things you said in this video. As a computer professional, sitting down and making something out of clay is so rewarding, even if I have as many failures as successes that this point :)
Simon, this was a right good video to watch, really enjoyed and hope you may do a repeat of how you started up in business by going door to door(that older one also enjoyable). The mug form your Dad was working on looks very familiar, maybe a bit more squat than your current one. Thanks for the this! Did you post this at 3:00 o'clock this morning?
Ulrike Klaschka Hi Ulrike, I live in the Netherlands and was thinking the same thing about how great a wheel like that would be. I believe he sells the plans on his website. If you go ahead with this project let me know, maybe we can find someone to build one, or two :) Naturally I would buy the plans as well so that Simon is compensated appropriately :)
‘You center the clay but the clay centers you’.....what a true statement, Simon! Thank you for all you share with us!

Simon Leach has been THE MOST influential youtube potter for me. I am three years into my clay adventure and loving it more every year. Thanks Simon !

How could anyone give thumbs down to this great video. Thanks Simon for this insight to your life.

So generous Simon. Thank you. Love your videos. I learn so much and enjoy them all.
I always love watching the process of creating.
A superb insight into the life of one of the master potters of modern times. I am also proud to have some of Simon’s work in my pottery collection
