- John Christie has been making pots for nearly 50 years.
This video explores his techniques and philosophy and records the firing of his 50 cubic foot wood-fired kiln in the north east of Scotland.
The pots are made by hand, glazed to his own recipes using local materials.
His pots reflect something about him, they reflect the environment they are born in, and they reflect the generations of pots that came before them.
All the pots in the video - and more - are available to buy from the showroom at Blackhills or from the pottery Etsy store.
You can find out more about him and see more of his work at:

and email him at: john@blackhillspottery.co.uk
The film was created by Rhys Absolom and Helen Christie.

Made by another human being with love in their heart.
Brilliant man.
Hello from rural Japan. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and imagery with us. I agree that landscape is most important to us potters-- after all, it's where the clay comes from... ; )
Love this human and the way of making pots.
Lovely pots made by a man with love in his heart. Doesn't get better than that. Thank you.
Beautiful. ..both you and your pots John.
Every potter I've met has been just as genuine in their love of the process as can be
What a lovely film. Can definitely see the love in your pots, John
Spot on! I love these pots and the message of humanity and the connection between maker and user. This is exactly how I would love to work. Well done.

No doubt the Master of his art.Fifty years into it,my God ! It had to be a passion....;)))))
This is a beautiful film of your process. I'm in Arizona, USA and find watching the processes of potters in the UK to be mesmerizing. It's inspiring to me, as a potter, to watch the daily connection with the clay, the studio, and the home. Thank you for posting!
Lora, have you seen the video by the Native American potters from Arizona part of it is why we do what we do, I found it to be very inspiritional.
What a beautiful film.
The point made at 10:26 is, I would think, essential to all artists and poets. They want to express in a unique way something that is "the same about me as everybody else".
Beautiful work and very inspirational.
This is the best video I’ve seen about making pottery , I guess this why I make pots. Thank you.

So intresting!
Love how he talks about the user contributing to the making.
pots of nature
I wonder if he first fires the clay once to make bisque, and then glazes it followed by a second firing?
