Joke, isn't it? Maybe they could stage another competition for their victims. Couldn't believe what I was hearing in this. We messed up the architecture, if you tell us how we can fix it, you might win the chance to reduce your risk of respiratory problems. Total disgrace
Vast majority of mould & damp is caused by the tenant themselves & their modern lifestyles but no one wants to hear this. Drying clothes indoors & in tumble dryers, showers & bathing, cooking, we lose over a litre of moisture while we breath overnight. Without open windows & adequate ventilation issues will occur. Of course there are exceptions to this, in the vest majority of cases it’s lifestyle. You’d be shocked how many people don’t dry & mop up the bathroom after showering or bathing then are shocked & bemused when black mould spots appear or damp smells.
The housing schemes built back in the early 1950's were constructed using cheap materials that only allowed the housing to last a few years before showing signs of deterioration. I seem to recall the design was of Russian origin and were also put up very quickly. We moved to Drumchapel from Maryhill in early 1954 and were the first to occupy the new place on Achamore Road. Although it was vastly better than the living conditions we had in Maryhill my da decided to emigrate to Canada in 1956. He said at the time that Drumchapel would end up run down in a decade or so, do to the shoddy workmanship used to build it.
Let's be honest they used crap materials because it was a government grant,it wasnt about the people it was about the money. Growing up in Castlemilk Ice on the windows was normal in winter we would live in the fridge because it was warmer than our rooms.😂 going to bed fully dressed with gloves on was normal. Now I have a new built house in Drumchapel, and guess what it's like Castlemilk all over again. Living in one room, electric blanket on because it's cheaper than heating. Open a window the housing says....no chance say I.....the rats will get in. Yes, I have rats too, they have more rights than me because GCC cant afford to send pest control out or pick the bins up regularly but wait....they can send cash abroad. Corrupt politicians.
Brought up in garthamlock in 80s a can mind the ice on inside of the windows would get shouted at for picking at it with knifes etc incase smashed the glass 😂
Am in a housing association homeand the rent is almost 600 a month, we have wooden windows and no insulation apart from our loft in this day and age it is ridiculous as the lady at the end said its heat or eat and we are right back there again in 2024,
Plastic doors with private housing ass worse.they need to be held acoutable. Im out in erskine and paisley is the same.although. rought up in possilpark
Hindsight is 20/20 vision as we know but they should have tried to preserve as many of the Victorian sandstone tenements as possible. Often easy enough to fit inside sanitation etc. My 1 bedroom 120+ yr flat has the most beautiful tiling in the close, these houses were built by skilled workers and will still be standing for decades. The giant post war labour camps like Castlemilk etc were built quickly with zero thought for amenities and with poor materials. I'm sure the schemes were seen as a huge improvement by folk living in Gorbals slums, just bad planning I suppose? Good video, many thanks
Still the same going on Today. Homes riddled with damp, mould, In my case subsidence. Cadder Housing haven’t an Interest or clue. It took me getting a Solicitor involved for them to even contact Me. Absolutely shocking. All about the money.
Since I have stayed in drumchapel the high flats. I can't put my hearter on as it's far to much money and I end up in hospital with chest infections as I catch the flue to easy plus i have moled in the house as well. And they will not move me as I don't need a house . I hate high flats. I stayed in Red Road flats and Wyndford Flats as well. When you get a house in the flats u are stuck in them
My blood was boiling while I watched this video. What a complete farce. The houses were built without insulation and without proper windows. The tenants had nowhere to dry their clothes. But, apparently, the problems were caused by the tenants?? Instead of trying to put their heads together to come up with solutions (what a nerve that anyone even had the gall to suggest this) the tenants ought to have taken out a mass class action suit and sued the pants off the council and all the contractors who were involved. Don't tell me no one made money off building these crap houses. And, by the way, do some people think that Scotland is the only place in the world with a cold, damp climate? Maybe the Council should have looked to other northern countries like Scandinavia and Canada. Does the Glasgow Council think that the populace in these other countries are all ill with respiratory problems, etc., and that their walls are running with damp and covered in mould? This is complete nonsense. And, another thought, obviously all those flats needed to be fixed, but maybe it would have been cheaper to knock them down and start over. And, did no one consider building a type of wash house/laundromat for each of these residential buildings so that the tenants could do their laundry away from their living quarters? Even in the 40's and 50's people in Glasgow had the option to go to the steamie. I am utterly disgusted at the way Glaswegians have been treated. Never equal as far as I can see, but always expected to pay taxes, etc., for virtually no discernable benefit.
Great video and commentary! Sadly not a solution to Scottish problems! Not much has changed in parts of Scotland. Sadly also members of the communities destroy things for others!
People don’t want to hear this but the vast majority of damp & mould issues are caused by the tenant & their living conditions. Drying clothes indoors over radiators & clothes horses, we lose a litre of moisture from breath while asleep, cooking, tumble dryers, showers & baths. People leave the bathroom soaked after showering or bathing then wonder why they have mould. All these factors cause mould & damp if you don’t open windows, have adequate ventilation & mop up the moisture.
Once a building is damp ,it is cheaper to build new homes.no amount of insulation will help ,but then the cash cow will run dry.health well they whant you to die early, not young.
Yes you are correct both main parties are responsible the reason people voted for the SNP was the hope they would put Scotland first. How disappointing that turned out to be they have destroyed Scotland from the inside tax money wasted on ego projects education, NHS neglected to the point of ruin. Child’s poverty has risen under the SNP. Money to build a mosque in Glasgow was a priority money for Gaza another priority embassies that we never needed more money wasted, migrants housed in four star hotels as their own people froze in poor housing during lockdown they had the audacity to give themselves a rise bringing the average wage for Scottish MPs to £70.000 to live on as the rest of Scotland couldn’t even go to work with the little dictator locking down the population in Scotland yet SNP members traveled on trains with zCovid spreading it around to others traveling. Nicola Sturgeon had workmen renovating her home during COVID at tax payers expense she and her husband were robbing the people blind on stupid projects to please the EU she thought gullible fool her a,bition was to get herself a place at the EU in Brussels rather than do the best for Scotland. A poison little traitor to her own people and yet she still sits in that den of iniquity known as Holyrood.who have done NOTHING for Scotland or its people we tried to warn you we needed a change vote Reform of shut down Holyrood. Shutting down Holyrood would have been better than what we still have Labour another bunch of traitors Lib Dem’s no better they both pushed through the gender bill and still hope to implement it into law. Scotland never had the problems we have today Tony Blair’s meddling done more harm to Scotland with his encouragement of autonomy it’s been a failed disastrous experiment that has ruined Scotland REFORM REFORM REFORM ALL THE WAY or shut down the extremely expensive Spanish building that was built for Labour more wasted money built by Donald Dewar money that should have been invested in the people not their ego projects no better than the SNP.

Those houses built back in the early sixties were done so on the cheap and nasty . Yes ,there have been improvements in and out of them ,but where are the amenities and infrastructures for people to enjoy and relax and have a good time in the inner cities and schemes ? How's about building an indoor bowling alley in the east end of Glasgow for example ? Or floodlit tennis courts where kids can play all year round on hard floor courts ? Places which will be used and enjoyed by everyone all times of the year ..who knows it might produce another Sir Andy Murray ? Just give the kids something to do and look forward to ....

You mean the old tenement buildings were improved then demolished? Or the post-war monstrosities?
