Cruiseman, I wanted to thank you for the excellent walk through on downloading the North America Map directly to my laptop. This really allows me to work on routes without having the GPS connected to the laptop. Your instructions are easy to follow and your editing and voice overs are the best on the internet.
I bought the Zumo 396 like you recommended, takes a heck of a long time to figure everything out, glad I found out that you have 13 Garmin tutorials, very well done.
Have you tried this with the newest update on Garmin Express and your Zumo XT? It's a big problem now that you cannot download load the map to your computer.
are you kidding me? i have the same issue; This makes the product near un usable!!! I can’t do anytning or see any detail in basecamp!! what a disastrous interface
@@BartMassee if you see Steven Mendes comments, he says he made it work through OSM file. I don’t know what he means but it’s possible. Otherwise so far it’s a big failure by Garmin
@@kristaps2010 its still terrible software, but i managed to upload the maps. switch off garmin express, then and only then it will work in basecamp. go to map details.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I came across it when searching for info on how to extend my knowledge on the ins and outs of base camp. Your way of explaining the different step by step procedures can be followed with ease particularly, as you articulate so well. My compliments!
This is an old comment, but it worked on mine in 2024. I had to go to map details, then to map options. I downloaded the map to my computer, and then I had to restart basecamp.
This is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post. Question, the map shows hills, shadows etc when using the map installed on the zumo, they do not appear when using the map installed on the computer. Any idea how to make this show up on computer installed maps?
2024 here, I just got my eTrex 32x and was playing with Basecamp and found the global map in Basecamp as you described with no detail, in fact if you try to create a route it says that the current map is incompatible and that I need to buy a map online, I bought TopoActive Europe, but currently unable to download it to my Garmin as it threw a wobbly at my 128G microSD so had to buy a 32G which is arriving tomorrow, anyway. long story short, I tried to follow this video to get the map intop basecamp but there are no "Map Options" buttons that allow me to install to computer.
Cruiseman, how do I DELETE an old version map in BaseCamp? Last night I updated my Nav 6; map and software update. I will load the new map version into BaseCamp with the help of your excellent instructions. Also, I want to delete the previous version; can't seem to figure out how to delete a map. Thank you for your videos!
My new Zumo XT does not have the option to load city navigator 2022 onto base camp with out the XT being hooked up. I think Garmin disabled the map option you demonstrated, I did have garmin express hooked up also.
This isn't working for me with a Rino 750 AUS connected. There is no option to install a map to the computer. Perhaps it's because I have not purchased any additional maps. I have installed OSM on the device, pity I can't then copy that to basecamp.
When I open Garmin Express, the window does not display any map information. All I see is "Latest Version" and then nothing below. Any idea what's going on?
Only works with existing maps that came with Garmin device. If you purchase a new map to a different part of the world, how do you load that onto BaseCamp?
When I connect my gpsmap 66i to basecamp it will download all maps. I will open express but it will not work as your map options. under map options my TopoActive Europe map will offer to Reinstall the map that is currently loaded on this device. nothing else. I'm not sure if I want to reinstall it... Any ideas? I will go home and test it on my own iMac rather the one I'm on now at guests.
There is no option to "install to computer" in Garmin Express. I am trying to install my maps on my Garmin device to basecamp. I am using a MacBook Air Apple silicon. Can this be done using Apple Silicon?
I did all of that , but the download stops at 56% and never finishes - no file sin themap folder at all, and now my express thinks my device needs to be udpated too - even though map is at same version listed for update....I guess I should just reinstall everything again?
After going through these steps, the map does not appear in BaseCamp. The map files are even installed on my hard drive, I can see them, but the map does not appear in BaseCamp v4.7.4
Garmin Express should automatically open when you attach your device to your computer. If not, you may need to reinstall it from Garmin. The steps to install a map to the computer have changed slightly over the years. With your device attached and recognized by Basecamp and Garmin Express, click on Map Details in Garmin Express, then on Map Options. Then click Install to Computer. Once it's finished, detach your device, shut down Basecamp, and reopen it. A dialogue should appear that asks if you want to install the map to Basecamp. Say yes.
Question, I do not have map options showing in express. I have verified express is up to date. By the way, I am using a Mac. Any thoughts that might help?
I contacted Garmin, I was told that the maps (on the micro SD card inside the gps) could not be transferred from the Garmin Montana unit to my computer, that my computer would only used the maps while it was connected. Not life time maps.
Garmin Express only lets me install ALL of Europe which take 3 hours over fibre! 8gb download. I only want the UK map! I don't need half the planet taking up room on my hard dirve, thanks Garmin. Man this software sucks. If only you could copy Google directions straight to your device we could cut out hours of wasted time learning to use decades old software that was poorly designed in the first place.
@@cruisemansgarage I am in an area where the only map I could get was a gmapsupp.img .... it works great from a flashcard in the GPS ..... problem is cannot get it into Basecamp so I can use it in planning hiking trips

Your tutorials seem to only apply to the MAC version of BaseCamp. When I use my windows version there is no need to connect the Garmin device to the computer for the maps to come up. The maps are stored on the computer and accessible by the program anytime.
In Garmin Express for Windows (and I presume this is true for Mac as well), there are three options for installing the files during the update process: (1) Device only, (2) Device and computer (3) Computer only. The default is Device only. You have to expressly (excuse the pun) choose Device and computer to install the maps on both devices. However, if you don't install on the PC, then the instructions in this video apply to Windows as well.

Not sure I have an answer for you on that. You may have to contact Garmin for clarification.

Go to map details vs. map options.
What version of garmin express is that? I have 7.3 and the "map options" area is gone under the "you're up to date" section.
Same thing for me. I just found out they don’t do that anymore.
in this day and age, why in the world should I need to download a map to a mapping program??
This has changed: I had to open map details vs. map options to get to the transfer map.
In the App Store I do not see Garmin Basecamp. How do I locate and download this? Never mind I see what I was missing. Duh.
You need to download from the Garmin website.

You don’t have to use Garmin maps. You can load open source maps in Basecamp as well.
I was unaware of that. Can you recommend a source for those maps?

Garbage instructions. Map Options menu no longer exists on Garmin Express. Hence this video is completely obsolete.
