£200 CityRover: New thermostat, HID-removal

  • My £200 Rover CityRover (Tata Indica) is treated to a new thermostat and coolant - toasty warm! I also remove the STUPID HID kit (which has already been claimed by a friend) and refit the H4 halogen headlamp bulbs. If you think this is all very impressive, next time, I give it a wash! I also open the mysterious boxes seen at the start of this video. I got so excited about a working heater than I forgot about them this time...
EDIT - I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE MOT! It has one until January. Getting confused in my old age...
    HUBNUT SOCIAL DETAILS! hubnut.org/201...

I own the original first model of Tata indica & its a good car. I have about 145kkm on it and mostly done preventative maintenance. The biggest repair ever done on it was a headgasket replacement cus of a stupid friend filled it up with petrol and it started spitting fire outof the exhaust and blown a hole in the headgasket .

@@KuntalGhosh A lot of the time its down to how a car is looked after, I drive a Fiat with a similar distance travelled. As you have with yours its only had regular maintenance done to it and it doesn't look like a ten year old car. In the UK Fiat stands for Fix It Again Tomorrow and yet I haven't had that with mine.

I have a UK car (registered in Wales, so welsh log book) but come MOT time I am always in Northern Ireland which is a joy because the MOT test is TOTALLY different in NI, but 100% OK for a British registered car. It's tested in a government test centre for 30 quid, takes 10 mins and 2 things I can assure you are NO EMMISSIONS test on either my 2008 diesel or my 2009 petrol cars, they do a idle smoke test, but never rev the engine. ( I believe it depends on the year of the car if they do full emissions test) As its a gov test there is no incentive to fail the car as the test centre do not do repairs. It's a world apart from the English system, but totally compatible in terms of validity. Also a couple of years ago my Citroen Diesel had a issue with the electrics and all the emissions and brake fail lights were on with the messages and check engine light etc... still passed! Only downside is you need to book appointment online up to 5 weeks before.

They don't test diesels or motorbikes for emissions but all petrol cars are tested as soon as you enter the shed. As your details are being entered into the computer somebody will have stuck the probe up your exhaust, and waiting time are currently a joke, weeks some centers its months.

Everything, without exception, works e.g. all four e. windows, even the lights in the sun-blinds, tow-bar and roof-bars as well, no rust at all, suede seats, sweet 1.4L engine g.box and clutch; all belts and water pump, plugs, oil service, filters, brakes done pre-purchase; I put four new budget tyres on the alloys; 205/55/16; Taxed and insured... £1000 on the road. From what I can tell in the video, the rear of the cam cover where the ignition components are, looks exactly the same as a TU engine out of a Peugeot 206. Which isn’t a bad thing, these little numbers run very very long. My dads 205 1.1 has 350k kilometers on it, and my brothers 206 has 250k km on it. Lovely motors!

    • @jannepo

Engine volume does not match: TU3 1.4 L (1,360 cc)
, spark plugs are at the rear (fire wall side) of the engine as is the intake manifold. TU thermostat has only two bolts and the valve covers of the TU engines have straight edges. Not an PSA TU -engine.

    Hi Ian,
I used to live in Pune, where Tata made the City Rover on behalf of Rover UK. It was basically a face-changed and re-badged Tata Indica. I also had an opportunity to take a tour around the Tata production facility, in 2000, and saw both the Indica and City Rover being built. We were told by the representative, during that tour, that the engine was Tata's own design, along with the whole car, being one of the first, if not the first, completely 'home-grown' car in India. Pretty much every other vehicle in the Indian automotive market at that time, was designed outside India and either imported or licenced for local production.
I also owned a Tata Indica 2000, as it was called. It had the same 1.4 ltr petrol engine, which I found seemed to be a little bit of a gutluss wonder. It seemed to struggle up hills on the highways between Bombay and Pune even with just my wife and I in it.
We eventually replaced it with the 3 box Tata Indigo saloon version, once that was launched. This had the 1.4 ltr diesel engine, which while having less BHP than the petrol had much better torque. That car took us all the way from Pune to Kerala one time and several times across to Hyderabad, visiting family. It was a great little cruiser to be honest. I would love to have a drive of a City Rover to see how it compares with what I remember of my two Tata cars.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan.

My understanding is that they licensed the TUD 1.5 engine and derived from that a 1.4 petrol variant that used the more robust TUD block which appealed to the Indians and did not need new tooling either.

    • @jannepo
      @jannepo 5 лет назад

Could be, that would mean that the cylinder block would be same as in PSA TU5 gasoline engine. If that is the case, why on earth they did not also buy the license for the cylinder head from PSA too? You can use TU5 block with TU5JP 8 valve and TU5JP4 16 valve gasoline cylinder heads or make an TUD5 with diesel head and pistons.
The TU5 block is one of the sturdiest cast iron blocks for gasoline engines. That is why they used the TU5JP4 as an foundation for an racing engine.

Then we have engineering pride, the "not invented here" and "we can do it cheaper and quicker" claim from engineers. I agree the TUD5 was a robust little bugger.

It's definitely not based on the TU petrol engine, the block and cylinder head design are completely different in design. Ian, go buy a cooling system flush specifically for rust. Rust causes overheats. Someone didn't use coolant and distilled water. Flush it with a rust removing cooling system flush and refill it up with coolant/distilled water!!!!
My current project car, same thing, Previous owned neglected the cooling system, red with rust. None of my other cars have this issue. Bought a anti rust cooling flush, as soon as I have the heads back on I will be flushing it, and then OEM coolant+distilled water only.

Even though it was an auto the box was lovely, shifted crisply and you could really hustle it in the bends for a big old barge. I'd have another like a shot.

Before the emissions, might not be a bad idea to put a dose of Redex for Petrol in the tank if it's full of fuel. Has worked wonders for me & might make the engine run smoother and more efficiently. My mother's Mondeo TDCI Diesel was having problems passing emissions despite otherwise appearing healthy, Redex for Diesels lowered the emissions from 1.37gm/km last year to 0.87GM/km this year, 8000 miles later. And now the 100,000-mile 14-year-old engine runs as smoothly as a brand new one. No doubt prolonged the life & reliability. Probably not such dramatic results with a petrol engine because there's a lot less soot build-up, but it will improve matters somewhat.

We use dipthane in Ireland and it works from personal experience with a Renault scenic 2001 petrol.
It failed miserably until I used dipthane and it passed with flying colours.
I chuck it into the cinquecento when it's tested also.

I'm guessing Rover fiddled with the steering and ride just to say they had a hand in it, otherwise they'd just have rebadged a car they didn't make, but oh well, maybe you could get some Indica parts to revert it to the original design or something... :D
