  • I review the Yongnuo YN685 TTL HSS flash thats $100 bucks. This is one of the most popularly requests flashes because of its price point and features including High Speed Sync and E-TTL. Yongnuo is mainly known for being a universal manual only flash. This YN 685 is brand specific because of the TTL option so be careful. I give the normal power tests comparing this with the Nikon SB800 and Yongnuo YN 560 Mark IV. To me this YN 685 is well worth the price and I highly recommend it.

    Hey Eric this was right on time for me, you are the man!!! I'm getting ready to buy in two weeks, I was looking at getting 2 of these with the same trigger as you have. The one thing that you might have forgot to mention and I'm sure you will cover in a later review is the HV port on the side. There should be a regular sync port as well. The HV port allows you to use an external battery pack, with the flashes and it might bring the recycle time down to 1 second. The way the Battery pack works is it controls the power and the batteries in the flash control the display. I was looking to buy a used sb800 or a sb910, skipping the sb900 because of the heating issues. Where there any heating issues with the Yongnuo? Thanks for doing this Eric and do some more research on that HV Port. Thanks and I'm looking to get the Bolt Cyclone DR PP-400DR Dual Outlet Power Pack, which will power two flashes.

    Might get one of these just for the high speed sync function. Ive used the Yongnuo YN560 Mk lll's for a few years and recently added a YN 560TX transmitter which is great too.
    Also have an old YN560 Mkll and even a YN460 slave unit too, both still working perfectly, no idea why anyone would pay 4 times as much for a Canon/Nikon Speedlight.
    Great video Eric.

  • @markharris5771
    @markharris5771 7 лет назад +2

    I have two of these and use them with the Godox 960 and 820 external power packs, massively cuts down on recycle time and you can use them all day no problem. Superb for me, but I'm not a wedding photographer and the most images I've had out of them in a 16 hour period is about 1200 images and that was very much a one off. I'd recommend them, and experience says they are pretty tough too (I'm a very clumsy person). I like using them with the Godox umbrella soft box with tracing paper as an extra level of diffusion, you can get some beautiful soft light from them. The yn622tx also fires the yn622 so you can use the yn622tx to trigger older speedlights on a different channel or (as I do) trigger cheaper studio strobes in conjunction with your yn685s. Great review, can't disagree with a single word.

    Hi Eric, awesome review. thank you! Can the YN685 be used mounted on camera and work as a master to trigger off camera flashes? there is a lot of reviews and some people talk about compatibility issues with some other Yongnuo flashes/triggers. Thanks again

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 лет назад

      Yes but depends. It depends on the settings of the other flashes if they can be set to slave. This flash usually is off camera and triggered by something else on camera, like a yongnuo flash trigger. It supportd for the YN-622N & RF-603/YN-560.

    Looked to see if this was previously asked, but did not see it... Can the YN685 trigger YN560IV flashes? I have three YN560IV flashes and love how easy they are to use, but was frustrated by not having the focus assist for low light. I bought the YN685 thinking that I could use it on my camera as the transmitter on my camera to trigger the YN560IVs as receivers, but am having difficulty figuring it out.

    these 3rd party flashes are great and a killer deal. on my channel I did a comparison of flash zoom head noise. I purchased a Shanny flash to use with a cheap external power pack for wedding and I was a little disappointed at the high pitch sound it makes when the zoom head moves. all my Nikon flash heads are pretty quite, at least they don't make that high pitch sound. I still love my Shanny, power house, flash but will not be using it for a wedding ceremony. maybe you can do a sound test with your flashes.

    Hey Eric!!! I have a question for you in regards to my DSLR camera and lens issues. I'm a relative beginner with a little hobby for taking pictures so I apologise if my questions sounds relatively dumb or stupid. So I was hoping if you could clarify it for me. Right I own a Nikon d7200 for over a year now. And I've been purchasing second hand lenses to try out different things. Now, I was really interested in Astro photography so I did my research and considering I'm on a budget from my part time job i bought a Samyang 16mm F2 lens. Now the issue I'm having with this lens is the first error code you covered in a previous video. The fEE error. Now your 100% right about the fact that if you switch it to maximum aperture the lens works. However this is my questions. What if I want the lower aperture?? Now this maybe a silly question and I did my research online and people said that you can manually adjust the aperture from the camera whilst leaving the lens at f22. Okay but what i wanted to know is how is that even possible to adjust the aperture from the camera. When you physically turn the aperture ring to a lower F number you can see the blades open so as to allow more light to enter. But the blades don't adjust when you manually change the aperture from the camera dial do they? Or am I wrong? I do adjust it and listen for a noise but I can't hear anything. I'm not even sure if I've explained this correctly so if I haven't let me know and I will explain. Sorry about this. Any input will be appreciated. Thank you very much Eric

      I had the same issue with my Nikon 50mm f1.8. turns out that what you see in the viewfinder is not what will the camera take. the blades do close. Having said that i am not sure about your lens but try it out on some shots with aperture wide open and closed and see what comes out. my 2c

      Great questions. So most flash brands are specific to cameras. But there are some brands that can work universal, like Godox or Yongnuo. So yeah it'll work!

    Hello , i have Nikon d750 and bought 2 YN685 external flashes. I got YN622 Transmitter to use them both at the same time while on stands.
    I got the opportunity to do some nightclub photography and was wondering how can i use them both at the same time.
    Obviously at the club i wont be able to use stands and stuff like that, and i can hold one in my hand with the transmitter on the top of the camera, but i want to use both at the same time.
    My questions is, any way i can put one of the flashes on my camera and that flash to trigger the other flash which would be in my hand. I know some flashes can be triggered by another flash but was wondering if this is possible with my YN685.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 лет назад

      why couldnt you use them at the club? A common thing for events and weddings, is to set up flashes on stands in the corners of a room so it helps with the ambient light. But I wouldnt be using two flashes at once if not really needed. I would just use one flash then. But yes, you can have one of the flashes on your camera and the other on a stand somewhere and set that one to slave mode.

    I have read about a fault with the yn685 which makes the flash only fire on full power and that yongnuo support is vvvvvvery slowwwww? Should I be put off by this?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 лет назад +1

      Hmm I havent run into that or heard about the full power thing. I also never had to contact their support and havent heard much. My guess is their support may not be the best since its international, but these flashes are very affordable and easy to replace. It would probably cost just as much to repair as to getting a new one. I shoot weddings professionally and I use these flashes, so I wouldnt be put off. But if you want to be comfortable, just look into the flash from your cameras brand.

Of course I got the YN622N-TX to have it fully compatible with the YN622N-TX for HSS. When using the 560-TX, change the mode to 603 slave. But to answer the latter part of your question, I agree with Eric that the YN622N-TX does not natively operate the YN560III or IV.

    Great review --
    questions -- I have the Nikon D7200 and use it with the SB800 (TTL) (rock solid) and I can use it off camera by using the built-in flash on D7200.
    1. I need a backup flash that does just about everything the SB800 and zoom out (I photograph birds and need to fill in the shadows) So, Do you recommend THIS yn685 or the YN968 ?
    2. Will my D7200 built in flash trigger either of those 2 Yongnuo units.
    Also, I quite often use the Flash Extender to get closer to Hummingbirds, they are so "flighty." lol (with my 200-500 nikon)

      1. I'd take this yn 685.
      2. The 685 doesnt have that ability. Its more built for triggering and the radio system. I believe the 560 mark iv would be the option if thats key. If anything, just snag the triggers, pretty cheap

But, I was hoping for a non oem Nikon SB910 that could be triggered by D7200 -- and would also be able to reach those flighty birds using my telephoto and the flash extender Fresnel attachment -- I look forward to your suggestion -- I am learning so much on your site.

    I really want to like YN flashes, but it has a major issue with the Nikon version:
    It fires a pre-flash even in manual mode (TTL on flash, M mode in 622TX). It means unless you have a really high end lightmeter that can ignore preflash then you can't get an accurate exposure. It also means a bit of power is wasted on pre-flash.
