  • Once in a Lifetime.
    Universal Pictures, 1932.
Based on the 1931 play by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, adapted by Seton I. Miller.
    Russell Mack, director.
The writing of “Once in a Lifetime” is central to Moss Hart’s beloved memoir, “Act One.” There’s quite a bit of rearranging, trimming, and rewriting in this film adaptation, but it’s recognizably the same play.
If anybody knows of a restored version of this movie, I’d love to know about it.
    Jack Oakie as George Lewis
    Sidney Fox as Susan Walker
    Aline MacMahon as May Daniels
    Russell Hopton as Jerry Hyland
    Louise Fazenda as Helen Hobart
    ZaSu Pitts as Miss Leighton
    Gregory Ratoff as Herman Glogauer
    Jobyna Howland as Mrs. Walker
    Onslow Stevens as Lawrence Vail
    Gregory Gaye as Rudolph Kammerling
    Eddie Kane as Meterstein
    Johnnie Morris as Weiskopf
    Frank LaRue as The Bishop

My niece's daughter just did this as a school play. It was Kaufman and Harts first collaboration. They did 7 after this.

Always glad to see Jack Oakie - hopefully more of his films will see the light of day (or at least the light of RUclips). Wonderful supporting cast, including Gregory Ratoff, Zasu Pitts, Louise Fazenda, Onslow Stevens, Oscar nominee Aline MacMahon, and in brief roles Walter Brennan and Alan Ladd! The train attendant is Sam McDaniel, the brother of Hattie McDaniel.

"When you're introduced just say hello. From that time on nothing."
"But supposing I get a good idea?"
    "That's when I sing Aida."
    Brilliant

58:30 Aline McMahon, fine actress, can embody any character she portrays.

Funny to see how much Jackie Gleason "borrowed" from Jack Oakie.

HA that doesn't have to be show business. That could be any business.
