You beat me to it. The idea to use those concrete cinder blocks in an aquarium. For me, living in NYC with soft acid water, I had been mentally considering using them to increase alkalinity and for cover for females and for subdominant males. Use a file or coarse sandpaper to smooth out those hole edges to avoid the fish scraping themselves. Good thinking.
The bricks I use aren't alkaline. They're just there as a cheap decoration :P Pour some vinegar on your rock to know if it's alkaline. If it is, it will make bubbles, like with vinegar and baking soda. You won't be able to make a "papier-mâché" volcano out of it though😂
The binder in cinder blocks is cement, which is made with lime, which is highly alkaline. Now, the rate at which that dissolves in the water is probably pretty slow. Probably just fast enough to help maintain the higher pH Africans need since the waste they create is acid. But that's why they have test kits.
Another great video!! I love listening to you talk !! Back to the topic at hand; it does seem very difficult to sex your fish. I was wondering if fish were like birds where the male is the colorful one and the female was more drab in color. Or like Beta fish where the female is white and the males are the colorful ones
One of the most informative videos on African cichlids. This helped clear up some things I was worried about. In particular the shape of the dorsal fin. Currently all my juvenile peacocks have rounded dorsal fins. But learned from this video that they change shape as they grow. But at the end of the day, like you said, nothing is guaranteed. Thank you very much
I'm glad this video helped you out. With time, you'll be able to tell. If you have extra space, take the males out as they show themselves... this gives some room for the others to shine!
@@QuebecCichlides thank you. Currently none of mine are showing color in my 75 😥 I have about 5 juvies in there between 1.5 to 2.5inches. And I have a couple smaller ones in the grow out.
Is it too soon to vent juveniles? Would you be able to differentiate the vent sizes at a young age? Or Is it more accurate to vent when they are adults?
Thanks for the info can you use that way of sexing fish for all cichlids or just African cichlids and do you think that you could do a video on catfish that come from the lakes in Africa what type they are I’ve seen some they look really cool I was wondering if you could show some of those really unique catfish
QuebecCichlides I looked up the word synodontis and found out that there’s a lot of catfish species some of them swim upside down and some of them makes squeaking noises many years ago I had a catfish I think it was from one of the lakes in Africa like thing and Nikki or Lake Victoria and he jumped out of my Fishtank and landed on the ground it was there for many hours it dried it all up I put it back in the tank it floated but it was still alive and then amazingly enough it’s weighing down on Aretha of a rock and hit there for several weeks then I seen it’s starting to eat in amazingly enough within a month it was back to its normal self it was amazing I’ve never forgot it and I love that catfish I just don’t know what it’s called but it did make that squeaking noise it was dark in color and head light blue spots on it
Thanks so much. All the other sexing videos go straight to venting or only provide a fraction of the info I obtained from here. Appreciate your knowledge. 👍🏽
Can I keep a electric blue and a kenyai together in a 55 gallon length tank. My sunshine peacock died so now their at even numbers can you have just two I do not know the sex they are only about under 4 months old
Hi Brad, Most of the Ad Konings books show pictures taken in the lake of african cichlids. Of course, he doesn't show the males and females of every species but the books are an excellent reference : Back to Nature Malawi www.quebec-cichlides.com/books/freshwater/konings-ad-back-to-nature-guide-to-malawi-cichlids-2nd-ed. If you want to have pure bred cichlids, I would advise you separate the species. If you don't care about that stuff, just leave all the fish together 😊
I got my Malawi cichlids when they're were juveniles and all the same colors and I used all the methods you described and vented using a magnifying glass last just be sure and they were all males.

The information on red empress is not true. She stated that they dont color up till a minimum of 2 years.... I have some that are 8 months old already coloring up with blue on the face and red in the body. So that's not true. Alot of things determine how quick they color up.
Good for you. Most of the time, they color up at 2 years old, like many other haps. Those imported from Asian suppliers often color up young because of added hormones. Just because something happened to you doesn't make it a general rule.
@@QuebecCichlides I have bred red empress for years, and I have always had them color up way before 2 years without adding hormones.. just like deep water haps. I have some right now alittle over a year and that have really nice blues coming in. FYI... Just because something "didnt" happen to you doesnt make it a general rule. All I did was place a comment letting everyone know that it's not exactly true. Just saying..
THANK YOU! I have a female Electric Yellow Labidochromis who bred with a large yellow orange cichlid (exact species unknown) that was given to me (not same breed). I could not figure at first why the larger guy was so aggressive-later I realized they were “an item” and he was protecting his own. After she had put the eggs in her mouth and I finally figure out what that was all about (had no idea about the mouth breeder) then I saw him prepping and courting another female in the tank and getting super aggressive, so needless to say, he got moved out of the tank to his own dwelling. The remainder I believe were females and all the trouble in the tank went away. Now I have 17-20 little ones that were from the mouth breeder. Thriving. So sexing them will be quite important and then figure out what to do with the mixed breeds….. I have NO idea!
Very informative, as usual, by someone who really knows her stuff!! bien joué.
Thanks Jim. Sorry for taking so long to answer, I've lost track of time this week 😂
I like the Cannabis leave on the aquarium lol
I'm glad you noticed lol! It's actually one of Hagen's plants. They call it "Abutillon".

Loved that you pretty much covered every type of Cichlid.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

Sometimes I get lucky with juvies but your best bet is to vent them as adults

thank you, was very helpful

My pleasure. I'm glad you liked it :D
How do you tell difference between male and female Jewel Cichlids? Thanks!
It's hard to tell. I usually vent them to make sure.
Do cichlids have to be separated for breeding? Or can you just let them be together with other cichlids?
If you want to have pure bred cichlids, I would advise you separate the species.
If you don't care about that stuff, just leave all the fish together 😊

Each fish is different but you can start seeing the most dominant males start to color up at 2 inches
not true about dorsal fins in juvenile peacocks pointed fins are male even at under 2 inch
I agree.
