I just purchased this tire carrier today for my 88 XJ. I had no idea it was a rare find and he’s only 15 minutes away! I haven’t got the first idea how to install this, but I’m going to study your video and hope for the best! Thank you!
I have a 96 XJ Cherokee with the dealer fitted spare wheel carrier (the one that mounts solely off the rear bumper) and the brass bushings are worn causing it to drop 4 - 6 inches when released. I'm trying to find replacement bushes with no success. May have to get them made or come up with an alternative. If you say that they are rare in the U.S, imagine how I feel here in Australia. Keep up the good work👍👍from the land down under
Those are a rare find . . . Outstanding information for if I ever find one . . . I never realized how well they were engineered as far as reinforcements and such. I had considered buying a mid 90s XJ just so I could get the tire carrier. (edit) Thank you so much for putting this video together. Much appreciated.
@@JustJeep_It Just scored one of these at the local pull a part yard. From a nice, somewhat rust free '87. I cut the body to get the body mount and inside brace parts. and took the entire bumper, so I can use those as my "templates". Now I just have to decide whether to use it on my rare 2 door '99, or call it a "rescue", and sell it to someone who may want it more than I do. BTW, did you ever get the rubber bumper that goes up there on the top left on the hatch? I forgot to grab the one yesterday. Going back tomorrow for that and anything else I forgot.
I own a xj '92 laredo with that same tire carrier, didn't know how rare they supose to be. Was tinking remove It, but no anymore, hope It can handle a 33 tire. I'm from Douglas Az, have seen a few xj's around with those tire carrier.
Howdy there boss, just wondering if I could get some basic measurements for those 3 bumper brackets. Bought the same carrier and the guy didn’t have em on hand so I’ve gotta fab some up
I have the other kind. My original was on my 91 Limited and I found one a number of years ago on eBay and bought it before the prices hit the sky. I have the majority of the parts, well, the IMPORTANT parts at lease (hinge, nuts, bolts striker plate etc). Do you have any videos of the alternate tire swing? Yes, I realize this one is on your XJ or instructions for the other swing?
Great Video I Bought a 88 Xj last year that came with the exact tire carrier, But the locking mechanism is loose and possible broken, can you share the handle and spring loaded bolt design to see if its possible to copy from? That would be a huge help Thanks!
What's the largest tire you'd feel comfortable using this for? I know they designed for the stock tires, but do you think it could take quite a bit of weight?
I have this carrier on my jeep but the top hinge that attaches to the body is missing whatever is supposed to be in it so it rattles. do you know what is supposed to be in there?
You are an absolute saint for posting such a detailed video, going to use this to mount my tire carrier. Thank you so much for these instructions

Very cool. Great to see the original options on the XJ'S
I’m into XJ preservation. This is a key piece of XJ history. So lucky to have found one

Man I've been looking for one of these. Great find
Thanks!!! These are more rare than Bigfoot riding a unicorn.
Love to see someone as excited as me when I got mine. I have the other option
Great save. Nice job and it looks great! God bless and stay well.
Thank you very much!!! Excited to finally get it installed.
I found the same one. The only things I'm missing are the support brackets under the bumper and the support bracket inside the quarter panel

Glad you liked the video!! Soo lucky to find this. And yes they didn’t make enough of these.

Congrats on finding that. Very nice
Nice score Joe,looks awesome.👍👍
Thanks Dan!! Better than I imagined. Really sets is off nicely.
Thank you for this video man I just picked up this exact carrier I'm retrofitting on my 2000 xj. Looks like I'm welding up a few bumper reinforcements
That’s awesome. Great addition to the XJ. Really sets it apart. Send pictures of when it’s installed. I’m on Instagram @justjeep_it
My 86 has the factory tire rack! It’s a two door with the vent windows. First year of the RENIX. Not the best spec but it’s an XJ.
2 door and tire rack!! Sounds good to me. The renix is tricky but a motor swap isn’t too bad.

Oh yeah. It’s a shame there aren’t more of these left. Love the way it looks. Send a pic of it to my Instagram acct justjeep_it and I’ll feature it.
Awesome video! I just picked up one of these too. Could you please share the template to drill? Thank you.

I like that tire swing too. Cool design.

Sorry for the delay. I’ll take a picture of it and send it to you. If you send me your email address.
nice bro
Was it the Jeep guy in Newport News and I mean the Jeep guy cuz he's got like his whole backyard full of XJ s
Tom..Yep..that's the guy!!! I rolled up to his house and it looked and hte yard looked like a Jeep pick-n-pull..It was awesome!
Did you add protections for the holes you drilled and lock nut on the other parts?
I think I used lock washers.
Here I am in Newport News Virginia looking for one
I got one in great condition but might get rid of it because my 33in tire is getting to heavy for it
How much and where you at

I’m thinking 31’s should be good but anything bigger may be pushing it.
I got one with the brackets and the upper part missing. Do you have the measurements by any chance?
Unfortunately no. The tire carrier you have is different from the one you have. Sorry.
I have this carrier on my jeep but the top hinge that attaches to the body is missing whatever is supposed to be in it so it rattles. do you know what is supposed to be in there?
I’ll see if I can get a picture
@@JustJeep_It thank you so much!
