- In this video, in a desperate attempt to not spend $100 on tires, I grab some 29er MTB tires to put on my Kent Ridgeland hybrid bike.

I'm a pro bike mechanic, retired race mechanic, some pro tips on installing tires. Put the valve hole top dead center, wheel on the ground, center the label of the tire over the valve hole, gradully feed the tire over the rim on both sides, this allows gravity to do part of the job and leverage to to the other portion. As you get to the bottom center you can grab a plastic tire lever or two and work the last of the tire over the rim. Then you put the tube in with maybe five pounds of air, literally jsut enough so it has shape. This time you install the second half of the tire just the opposite, with the valve at the bottom of the wheel. So starting from the top you gradually press the bead over the rim, culminating at the bottom of the wheel, then you press the valve in so the rubber around the valve moves out of the way of the bead, then you can pop the tire over the rim, reset the valve and pump it up. I've been known to install tires with my bare hands using this technique. I should probably make a video which would make more sense. If it's any consolation this is FAR easier than installing sew up/glue on race tires which require three layers of glue, pre stretching and a day to cure! Heh. Fun video, It's nice to see someone trying 29er tires on 700C wheels.

90s steel hybrid bikes with 700c wheels had no idea what they would eventually be appreciated for. They're now my all time favorite bikes.

That tire was tight because tires and wheels have a range of tolerances and thus can end up ill-matching. It happens with better ones too. A kool stop tire jack is painless and the best 15-20$ you'll spend on tire tools. Regarding the fork clearance - you might be able to fashion a "flint catcher" for it, but it'd have to float above the knobs and might not work so well. BUT if you switched to a tire with recessed tread it'd be more usable - the downside is those are a PITA to clean. They're ancient tech used for road bikes and to my knowledge never were a MTB accessory. But if your tires are soft enough they might squish to spit stones out instead so it could be worry over nothing.
The range of "what fits" is really wide. "Optimally" they match close for an aero profile, but that's not important for someone riding a steel bike, with standard rims, in dayclothes. According to Mavic's charts a 26x4.0 tire is safe on 35mm wide(Narrow?) rims at approx. 30 PSI, if you had a need for it. Definitely look into the proper tubes though, because thin-stretched ones can flat easier.

hey there i have same type of tires which is 700x40c and aye want to put on 29er wheels as well but my rims are even more thiner than urs and im in a carzy dilemma aye think my rims are 1.60 wide and 29er wheels need 2.10 so i cant put them on?
I’m happy to see this video as I purchased new mountain bike tires and inner tubes from Walmart (Brand: Blackburn 29”) which are expected to arrive tomorrow. I’m hoping they fit my petal assistant electric bike.

I have a 700c commuter ebike with some freaking skinny Wheels, I was thinking about tossing some 29ers on there myself!
On those 700c Wheels, if you hit just one rock in the road, it feels like your rim is about to crack, like an egg.
I installed 38c gravel tires on my 35c equipped city bike, and it has about the same clearance, it just clears the front derailleur. I went in thick mud, never had any problems.

The front is probably fine and I instantly thought "grind off 3 or 4 mm". I think the accepted minimum for clearance is around 6mm 1/4". Don't know if that's across all types of bike though. IME 38mm 👍 maybe slightly wider in the front if you want extra steering/stopping grip...
I ended up returning them and ordered the 40mm set from amazon, should be here tomorrow. I'll make a blog post with some photos and link it from the description here.
My road bike currently has 700c 23 what do I need to change in order to run wider tires.
Do you think I can do a direct swap to 38 tires??
You’ll need to check the inside width of the wheel. Generally the width of the tire, in this case 38mm cannot be double that of the inside width, so the inside needs to be at least 19mm.

hybrid bikes accept decently wide mtb tyres quite well thanks to all the clearance for fenders

I think more often the 700c tire will have a slightly lower, shorter, profile. The MTB 29" will usually be wider and taller.

yeah should work. Just make sure there is clearance in the frame.
Before putting the new bike tires onto the rim,I usually put the new tires out in the sun for thirty minutes and it fits perfectly onto the rim.👍👍👍👍

Running a 29" would make me nervous Why not run a 700 x 38c or 40c instead? Bell sells both sizes for $15 on Amazon.

@@BruceChastain I run the 38 reflective ones. Walmart had them on clearance for $3.50 a piece and I bought all of them (6 total so I’m good for a few years). 38c version has a smoother tread and I use it mostly on paved greenways so it works well. Definitely better than my 32c stock ones when it comes to hitting the ruts caused by roots.

Hey N1! I didn't actually keep these that long, I went with some bell 40mm tires which tended to fit better.

Hey man im pretty new to bikes but I got a fuji bike for free and was thinking of upgrading the tires it says 700 x 45c would the tires you put in the description be able to fit ?
yeah I think that would be fine, this 40mm tire is smaller so shouldn't be clearance issues. The only think to consider is your rim width, but really 40 to 45 isn't that big of a difference so I'd image your okay. If you want, look up a rim to tire size chart. I think it's generally 1 - 2x inner rim width, that's what the tire should be.
What would be the recommended size tire for this bike I like it but the colors of tires and grip on them is weird
I ended up going with a bell 40mm tire, which I think was a better fit.

ive been looking for videos about 700wheels and 29er rim since i got a used specialized crosstrail,i wanted a lil wider tire it has 700x45 i wanted to put a 29x2.0 or 29x2.1 or 2.2..now i know it would fit on the rim..thanks for the video man

x 25-32mm its a hybrid gt but i want knobbier tires what size do you suggest? I wanna do more trail than road riding. So ill need grippier tires.
Maybe go for the bell 38mm tires, look them up on amazon.com

Good to know it fits but for the small extra cost of a tyre designed by for that rim width you would get the peace of mind going into a fast corner or a rocky section, for example, that it’s not going to blow off or roll off the rim.

Bought 19 x 1.95 which is not quite as large. Fitted a hybrid bike perfect fit any bigger it would be in danger of rubbing. 1.95 is the width. 1.95 inches. If there is ample clearance on your bike no need to worry go as big as you like. Definitely worthwhile if your needs become more off-road than on the road. Got the 1.95 tyre for $40 the pair fairly low quality, but for the ride comfort great upgrade! No need to replace the tube either.

You lose strength depending on the material if too much heat is applied.
I have 700cx38x on my hybrid. Was wondering 29 inch size I could put on it. Anything bigger than a 700cX38c is considered gravel bike sizes and are too expensive. 29 mountain bike tires are cheap all day just need to know what size is considered 40mm
yeah I know they are expensive that was my idea with the 29". But that said the bell company does sell a 40mm gravel tire for cheap, I ordered one off amazon.

no I'm sure it's not tubeless ready, this is just a cheap rim.
Don’t worry I ride Bmx and when I put new tires on it’s the same thing but once you use them the tires would wear down a bit so they would fit perfect

I think going the 29" tire is a great idea, but maybe a set that's just a little bit smaller? I'd be more concerned of the tire folding than the clearance issue. But then again I don't know anything!

Yes 2.1" seems huge to me I was surprised to see them fit. I usually have 1.75" on my older 90s mountain bikes, only recently started going for tires over 2"

Sticks are the problem that I've found riding bikes like this, I've gone this route for winter riding around town and its always been fine and switched back in the spring... I have been lazy and that is how I found out about the sticks being an issue... but when are they not an issue.. Its not the entire branches per se as its them handle grip sized old sticks that been laying around for ages that bugger me up when I haven't switched back soon as the snow melts or taken on trails.
I ended up going with a 40mm tire, was just a little too close for me.
I think if the wheel rim is ok then narrow clearance seems to be ok with normal speed.
When I started riding on gravel, the little bit were getting in there and making some noise, so I ended up going with a slightly smaller tire.

@@BruceChastain I did it. Thanks patience is the biggest part. What a pain in the butt. I ended up taping in between every spoke and leaving it taped over night. It was somewhat shaped I put a tube in it and voila!! Finitto.

It really has to do with the width of the tire that that the frame will accept, like in my video this 29" was the absolute max. I really don't know about your frame, you can take a look and see how much clearance you have with your 38s and imagine if a 50mm would fit, means about 6mm or 1/4" on each side. that would be for just a 2" (50.8mm) 29" tire.

Man you should put those tapes back haha. That bulb effect is going to be huge but I think the tire won’t put you in danger. ReneHerse site has a document explaining a lot of that. I tried to buy from them a tire and they explain me why I shouldn’t because of not enough clearance but you know stuff like what you are doing is what keep this sport so great.

It’s really not frame size dependent
2:14 so heavy... I use WTB Nano Foldable 29x2.1 on my 29er. 600 grams. Easy to install and last 3 times longer than my original Bontrager. Planning to try Continental Race King TR Foldable 29x2.0, better puncture protection.
I know, I knew when I picked them up they were heavy but I was shocked when I saw the weight. I was expecting about 700g.

Marketing is the reason for 700c tires costing more than 29ers. To me a commuter with 29er without a front shock is the ultimate in winter and single track. If you put 29x2.0 Bontrager Connection tires....it will fit nicer on that bike. They're like 25 bucks each. Great tires. I keep them for 26ers.
I think I agree, I can't see why else 700c stuff seems to have like a 25% high price than the actually wide 29er tires.

yeah they do. I'm not sure, but I don't think these tires and for sure these wheels are not setup for tubeless.

`Here's something to think about (or perhaps laugh about). If a person had a 27.5 wheelset with 2.1 tires, because of the smaller diameter, that would give more clearance at the fork, and in the rear. What the heck, a 27.5 x 2.2 or wider tire might even fit on the rear, for more traction. One could also go mullet, and use a 26' even wider tire in the rear. What can I say, I'm a 70yr old geezer with nothing better to do :>)
actually you're totally correct, a lot of gravel cyclists will go down to 27.5 to be able to go a little wider. Hey why not go for a ride?
Don't bend the rim while off road then you will know just his close the tire really is. Ya grind it out to be safe it could jam only from a small hard stone or a large piece of stick.
true, I actually had that problem with a road bike once when I put too large of tires on it.
Nah y’all give it 2 rides and the second one the tire hops off the rim I had them set to only 35 psi and it felt like the inter tube was gonna explode until it finally did

Hey man you did a better job of telling how to put that lame ass tire on than bell's channel did, they know they have a hard to use product and won't show how to put it on they didn't even use a new tire to demonstrate in their video. I got those tires and had to take them to the bike shop have some one do it for me it was embarrassing.

Extend your dropouts by 1/2 inch and you will have plenty of clearance.

Professional bike mechanic told me they'll fit, BUT!!! Beware of folding possibilities. Guess we'll never know :\
I ended up going with a little bit narrower tire myself, 40mm bell tire.
A small tip, avoid using your thumbs. Put on a pair of gloves and use your palms.

Considering the build quality of those wheels you're asking for trouble with clearance like that. Get a pair of 700 x 38 cross tires. And keep your phone charged and your Uber app on cause you're gonna need it to get home after those wheels go out of true and the tires lock it up. Good luck!

I actually wasn't sure of this until recently.
Tires like that used to be garbage- not very round or even, fast wearing. If there is a decent brand on it like Kenda, that might be better.
I can’t speak to how long they last because I sold the bike shortly after, but they did seem round and rolled smooth.

IF IT RUBS JUST GRIND IT DOWN THE TIRE. I THEN HAD DEEP V SINGLE SPEED RIMS WITH 29×2.0 TIRES AN THEY WORKED. ITS A SHAME CHEAPER BIKE GIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT. THAT TIRE SIZE ON AN BRAND NAME BIKE WOULD NT FIT IN THE BACK.

the one near me didn't have any the day I was there. But I did end up getting bell brand 700, 40mm tires off Amazon.com

they are relatively I believe for road wheels, at 20.8mm.
