I bought this bike about 9 months ago at Walmart for $88. Ive ridden it for almost 800 miles, and have had no issues. I’ve replaced the handlebars and grips, as well as the seat. I’ve done nothing else to it, but I definitely will replace the yellow and green tires eventually. I’ve seen your makeover video, and will also remove the green paint from the brake levers. The welds on mine are nicely done, not messy. I actually prefer riding this Kent over my much more expensive Schwinn 7-speed 700 with 35c tires. Thanks much for review.
i would totally buy this for commuting, it's so simplistic tbh this is what a bicycle should be at its core, an accessible mode of transportation that everyone can enjoy you don't need to spend $1500 to have fun on a bicycle
Enjoyed watching this. The beauty of a bike like this is the simplicity. It's important that bikes like that are still on the market. Unfortunately they are not the best quality, but upgrades are possible and worth it. Keep up the good work 👍

Guy knows his stuff and his videos I have a lot of information. The bottom bracket might just need some Grease and I recommend looking over the whole bike before taking it for a ride.

The last bike I used regularly was a Trek hybrid that I bought new for over $700, which I enjoyed for a year on commutes/shopping/recreation until it was stolen. It's several years since then, and I just bought this bike from Walmart. I could afford something more expensive, but with this bike I don't have to worry so much about a thief cutting the lock. At this point I'm just looking for a compatible rear rack so I can go grocery shopping with my panniers again.
I'll also add that I was expecting the bike come in a box, but it was already assembled when I picked it up from Walmart. I think whoever assembled it did fine except for the brakes, which were rubbing the wheels. I had to reposition the brake pads and adjust the brake spring tension screws. The wheels have a wobble that's slightly more than 1 mm. If the wobble were any bigger, I would try to fix it, but it's close enough for now.

I just ordered this bike it was a hundred bucks at walmart and 250 on Amazon. All you have to do is replace the tires in front and back if you don't like the colors but we'll see how long I can stand them
haha I saw that on Amazon, I was going to link it on amazon so I can get a little commission on the sale but when I saw that price of course I didn't to suggest anyone to buy it there. I had to look up the cutback, actually overall that looks like a better bike for the price. But from what I can tell it's not sold anymore unfortunately. Stay tuned for some upgrades.

Thank you for all the measurement detail! There truly is no info available elsewhere online. I'm 5' 5" with an inseam of ~77 cm / 30.5 in. I really want to buy this bike because of the colors, price point, and intended usage (college student getting around campus), but I feel I would be slightly too short to ride it comfortably. I don't suppose there are any feasible modifications to make, no?
Glad it was helpful! I don't think there would be anything to really do to make it work as a smaller bike. But actually if you're just riding around campus, and you have a 30,5 inseam, I think it might be okay. At 5'7" I also have about the same inseam and it was okay for me. And on top of that if you're only riding like a mile here and there, eh you'd probably be just fine.
I bought one of these and replaced the 38c green and yellow tires with 32c Nimbus Flakjacket tires....peeled off all the yellow stickers...replaced brake levers with black ones...black hand grips and a white seat...it is fun and simple!
@@BruceChastain yes! I was too lazy to sand the brake the levers and just purchased an inexpensive set of black levers...For now the bottom bracket and crank assembly will work...but it would look so much nicer how you did your bike! Thanks for the videos I am learning from them!
I have the Thruster Fixie bike. Looks like the same bike but with a black frame and yellow handlebars. Goofily colored wheels and tires, but I have replaced the tires over time with black ones. I paid about $75 for it new. My gearing, though, s different. Sprockets are 48 and 18 for a ratio of 2.66. Mine has a "flip flop" hub, can be a fixed. I have left mine with a traditional single speed. My bike is about 7 years old. I've cleaned, inspected, and repacked front and rear hubs, fixed some flats, replaced tires as needed, and replaced one set of brake pads. I'm a 67 year old cancer survivor with a bad right knee. The cancer treatments over 2 years took away some of my strength and stamina. That and the knee make it tough with the single speed. I ride it every day on a 2.5 mile route that ends with a series of six hills. I time it also. For much longer rides, I am thinking about getting a bike with gears. This bike I have is so basic that makes it easy to work on. I think I will keep it if I get another bike.
I have 2 friends they own this bike. They swapped out tires so one has two yellow And one has two green. I rode it and it not a bad bike. Not the best but definitely not bad. Great 👌 video
To be honest I don't think it's ideal, it's a bit too long for that. But on the other hand you should be able to wheelie anything if you have the skills (I don't).
My girlfriend recently bought this bike for her 18 year old son and he absolutely loves it but he wants to put BMX bars on it, and I found some 600mm wide bars with a 3" rise, as well as a 4 bolt bmx style clamp quill stem. My question is, do you think this would still be a comfortable ride for him? He is about 5'9", I know the bars on it are a bit wider than the ones I'm looking at but I'm not sure of the rise, he lives far away and is not inclined to give me proper measurements, it looks like bars will probably sit a little lower as well with a 3" rise. Anyway if that all makes,. Will this setup work?
hey Paul that's very interesting, sounds like he's wanting to do all this wheelie stuff the youth are doing these days. But I think they are usually using smaller bikes over all, maybe with 26" tires. A lot of them use dedicated bikes sort of made for this street stunt riding, they will have much shorter chainstays. But maybe that's not what he's going for, maybe he just wants to change the looks up. Anyway I think wider bars would be fine because I found that this bike already has a shorter reach, so going wider will bring the shoulders down a little bit, but I think it will be okay. If he changes out the stem for a shorter one, like a BMX style I think he'll need a quill stem adapter, which are not extensive. And the shorter stem should help off-set the wider bars. Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.
@@BruceChastain Yeah, he is going more for the looks at this point, he definitely does try to wheelie, but it's more the looking cool and standing out that's more important to him. Do you know what length that quill stem is on that bike? I have found a few longer 22.2 quill stems, with the 4 bolt mount, but if you reccomend the adapter (I'm guessing to threadless to a 25.4), than I will look into that instead. Thanks for the reply and any future help/advice. He's going for bright orange bars, on a white stem mount, he's already stripped all the stickers and designed his own with the help of my girlfriend/his mother, and her cricut machine that will be a matching bright orange, with the name of his rap group on it. So basically this will be the antithesis of your build. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to post the finished product, that will likely make you cringe. I just want it to be comfortable and safe for him, not much to my taste either, considering I ride a Jamis boss cruiser with a front mount baby seat these days.
hey when you're young! I can't recommend this product as I've never used one before but I think this would work well. This is my affiliate link to the product (I get a few cents if you buy it): amzn.to/3hWHcOb I think with the adapter you'll be able to find more BMX, shorter style stems. I just went out and measured my stem and it looks to be about 90 to 100mm, it also has a steep angle upward. It's cool he's into modifying it and even to the extent of making custom graphics. And hey I spend plenty of evenings hauling our toddler round on the back of our cruiser too, I just never show that bike because it's pretty boring.
Man I bought this bike like 10 years ago, removed all brakes and rode it with the fixed gear and did 50 miles on it, hell of a tough ride. Downhill was the absolute worst. Still have it today, but only 1 red original tire tho
i have had this bike for 7 mo now and love it. glad i scored it from walmart for $98 when i could. needs a better seat and to wrap some bar tape around the handlebar grips to make it comfy but easy to do ( i used glue gun) I bought matching ribbons. to tie on ends of grips to make more girly. love it
I bought one and kitted it out new decals,Handel bars,spoke skins, black tires,grips love it and know it’s worth probably around 250 to 300 hundred dollars and weighs 4 pounds less

The clunking sound is because of a lack of lubrication plus not being installed perfectly. You might go through bearings. When mine got really loud and sounded like a trash can rolling down the street that was why. Good news is the bearings are cheap but swapping it out can take time and just be annoying to deal with
Can't really argue with some of your thoughts but I'd rather have something a bit older second-hand for the same money; ok it might need a little money spending on it but if you choose carefully you'll probably get something that's a little higher quality. I just picked up a steel Bottecchia of indeterminate age (likely mid-70s) and it's great, super stylish too.
I spent $1300 on a trek Roscoe earlier this year. I bought this bike you’re reviewing for $118 last week and I like it way better. I can go faster on it, and I feel I have more control on it compared to my roscoe!
Interesting that it fits you well. But I suppose it's possible because everyone has different proportions, I'm 5'7" and it was fine for me. But I'm surprised that you don't like your trek more, maybe it needs a tune up, because really that should be a better bike. thanks for watching!
I've been looking for information on this damn bike for a long time now. Was gonna get a single speed to start commuting to work and saw this bad boy at Walmart for $98. Didn't buy it yet cause I was looking for information. Now I finally know the gear ratio and all that, plus more than I expected. Good work bud! Also, would you suggest this lovely cheap bike for a 10 mile commute to get started out commuting to see if I like it? Also, besides pedals and seat, what would you suggest to make it better for a longer commute?
hey Chris! You're welcome! Indeed it's surprisingly hard to find details on this bike, glad to have some of them documented here. As for a 10 miles commute, well for sure the bike can handle it, but also for sure there are quicker bikes that could do the job a little better, maybe with slightly steeper gearing. On the other hand if you are on a tight budget sure I'll work. And if you're really on a tight budget look for one used, I got this one for $60 and I do see them come up for around that price from time to time.
As Bruce found out - rotating handlebars - these bikes can be dangerous to ride out of the box or assembled at the store at worst and not ready to ride at best. They always come with something way too tight - hub bearings, headset or bottom bracket ready to crush bearings - spokes not tensioned - handlebars not tight - pedals not tight - etc. It would be great to see a complete tear down with a full account of what should have been done. Often these bikes can be good bikes if they are assembled correctly and used as intended.
Is it possible to lower the seat even more than what you showed in the video? how tall are the seat and the top of the frame from the ground up? Will you recommend it to someone who's 5.5 ft without shoes?
yes you can lower the seat more, but I'm pretty sure if you're 5'5" you wont be able to stand over the top tube without tilting it to the side. Best thing would be to go to a walmart and try it.

okay so the top tube slants upward to the front slightly so it depends on where you measure it, but I measured it just a little bit in front of the seat, about where you might stand and I measured about 31.5". However I have 700cX35mm wheels on it now, which are both narrower and shorter than the silly ones it comes with, so you could probably add another .5' for the tires it comes with, making it about 32".

hey GR! I bought mine used, but I wouldn't expect it to come with all the tools needed. But really I'm sure you can gather the few required tools. If you're on a mega budget, maybe even a dollar tree will have what you need.
@@A1Bokeh yeah, with bikes it's a huge mix, but these type wheels for sure called 700c, the tires are 38mm, but you can go as narrow as 25mm, but no wider than I'd say about 48mm, I'm running some 40mm on it right now that fit very nice.

Great video man. You should put it on a scale and show us the actual weight,. before any upgrades. I think you might save about 2 lb if you were to replace the tires/tubes with 25c folding slicks. is it possible to replace that fork with a much better and lighter possibly a carbon fork?
hey there AB! Check out @1:10 I say the weight is 13.6kg or 30lbs. Then in the next video I changed the crank as well as tires and I believe I talked about the weight after that.
Hi Teresa, in my opinion it's a bit big, even I think I was on the edge at 5'7". However that said, there was a woman on one of the videos, maybe this one who said she was like 5'4" I believe and said that it fit her fine. My advice is to go to walmart and try it. Bring a few tools so you can adjust the saddle to the right height, or ask a worker to help with that. Go at a time it's not too busy.
I'm 5'6" and the top bar is a bit too high for me.. but I'm learning to tilt the bike when getting on and off. Really good ride if put together well and maintained.

I have this bike and I bought 700c tubes for it because the tires pop very easily. but the bolts that keep the wheels together are welded into the fork and I can’t get them out, if by any chance you still have this bike can you please make a video on how to get the bolts out, and also I was looking online for airless tires so the tires don’t get flat again and the only option for the tires was 700x23c, and I don’t know if my tires are 700x23c
Hi Lulu. You mean you can't get the wheel off? After you remove the nuts, check if there are little tabs holding the wheel to the fork, they will be on the axle itself, maybe that's what's stuck. It really shouldn't be welded.
for the money it's a lot better than I expected, and 27mph is pretty good, I guess that was for just a short period as I'm sure your legs were spinning like mad.
I just found out from the company that makes this bike that they will sell you two black tires for $28 with shipping so if you're not crazy about the tire color you can turn this into a black and blue bike

So we just bought the bike and I put it together for my fiancé and already I know I did it wrong I did the spin the wheel break test it went around once more before breaking.
For a cheap bike I rode it for half day but the handlebars kept getting loose might put a little rubber between the bike and handlebars are maybe some glue
hey Steven. I looked it up in the Kent manual, it says the bikes are made for max of 275 lbs. That said with gentle riding maybe one could get away with a little more.
I have this bike and have had a lot of fun on it. The chain came off the other week and I launched about 5 yards over the handle bars. Ouch. Regardless it’s a fun bike

I used to have have bike for communiting in short distance, such as train station and two got stolen. That is why this price tag is suitable for me. And this bike is more than $140 at walmart, and I blame god damn inflation.
most people that buy a "mountain" bike at wal-mart should get this instead. one gear is fine for folks riding around town, and it makes it so much less likely to break.

Hey Hannah. It would require a new front fork and for someone to weld a mount on the frame for the back. I think it’s not worth it, but if someone wants to learn, guess it’s a good bike to do it on.

@@enigmaticreverieproduction5169 it's not really the wheel size, it's more the frame size. A lot of times they have this bike at walmart so you can check it out yourself, but I really think it'll be too small. You'll need to look for a frame size XL or something like that.

A third buyer is that 50 year old that has already been through some upper $$$ mountain and road bikes and knows they are not going to ride Rocky Mtn trails or 200 miles of roadway. They just want to ride to the pub for beer and chips. 🍻
That's a ~52 cm frame and i can tell just by looking at tge video it needs another saddle and most likely different tires. And the list goes on. People think cheap bikes are a good idea, until you realise the seat of your new 99 dollar bike feels like a brick and makes you lose feeling in your bottom.

I work on bikes for a living and most of the bikes I work on are walmart bikes. People if you buy walmart get it tune up. Cus they need them bad.

When I first started bike commuting it was on one of these but they were black and red at the time and called a Fixie Thruster.
yeah I know about these and wish they still sold them, they looked at least somewhat better and had the flipflop hub.
I still have that fixie with the 2 red tires, mint.

this bike has potential! I believe that with some improvements it would be a great urban bike,she looks a little bit like the Schwinn Cutback

I found one that was dumped in the woods near my house. I kept it for the frame and changed out everything else, my son loves it.

great that you are doing it right, keeping it going with good maintenance, honestly probably one of the few out there that use this bike correctly.

To be honest I don't think it's ideal, it's a bit too long for that. But on the other hand you should be able to wheelie anything if you have the skills (I don't).

My girlfriend recently bought this bike for her 18 year old son and he absolutely loves it but he wants to put BMX bars on it, and I found some 600mm wide bars with a 3" rise, as well as a 4 bolt bmx style clamp quill stem. My question is, do you think this would still be a comfortable ride for him? He is about 5'9", I know the bars on it are a bit wider than the ones I'm looking at but I'm not sure of the rise, he lives far away and is not inclined to give me proper measurements, it looks like bars will probably sit a little lower as well with a 3" rise. Anyway if that all makes,. Will this setup work?
hey Paul that's very interesting, sounds like he's wanting to do all this wheelie stuff the youth are doing these days. But I think they are usually using smaller bikes over all, maybe with 26" tires. A lot of them use dedicated bikes sort of made for this street stunt riding, they will have much shorter chainstays. But maybe that's not what he's going for, maybe he just wants to change the looks up. Anyway I think wider bars would be fine because I found that this bike already has a shorter reach, so going wider will bring the shoulders down a little bit, but I think it will be okay. If he changes out the stem for a shorter one, like a BMX style I think he'll need a quill stem adapter, which are not extensive. And the shorter stem should help off-set the wider bars. Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.
@@BruceChastain Yeah, he is going more for the looks at this point, he definitely does try to wheelie, but it's more the looking cool and standing out that's more important to him. Do you know what length that quill stem is on that bike? I have found a few longer 22.2 quill stems, with the 4 bolt mount, but if you reccomend the adapter (I'm guessing to threadless to a 25.4), than I will look into that instead. Thanks for the reply and any future help/advice. He's going for bright orange bars, on a white stem mount, he's already stripped all the stickers and designed his own with the help of my girlfriend/his mother, and her cricut machine that will be a matching bright orange, with the name of his rap group on it. So basically this will be the antithesis of your build. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to post the finished product, that will likely make you cringe. I just want it to be comfortable and safe for him, not much to my taste either, considering I ride a Jamis boss cruiser with a front mount baby seat these days.

I think with the adapter you'll be able to find more BMX, shorter style stems.
I just went out and measured my stem and it looks to be about 90 to 100mm, it also has a steep angle upward.
It's cool he's into modifying it and even to the extent of making custom graphics. And hey I spend plenty of evenings hauling our toddler round on the back of our cruiser too, I just never show that bike because it's pretty boring.
Man I bought this bike like 10 years ago, removed all brakes and rode it with the fixed gear and did 50 miles on it, hell of a tough ride. Downhill was the absolute worst. Still have it today, but only 1 red original tire tho
i have had this bike for 7 mo now and love it. glad i scored it from walmart for $98 when i could. needs a better seat and to wrap some bar tape around the handlebar grips to make it comfy but easy to do ( i used glue gun) I bought matching ribbons. to tie on ends of grips to make more girly. love it

I bought one and kitted it out new decals,Handel bars,spoke skins, black tires,grips love it and know it’s worth probably around 250 to 300 hundred dollars and weighs 4 pounds less

Sorry no idea. I’d just give it a try. The main point being the diameter of the handle bars.
The clunking sound is because of a lack of lubrication plus not being installed perfectly. You might go through bearings. When mine got really loud and sounded like a trash can rolling down the street that was why. Good news is the bearings are cheap but swapping it out can take time and just be annoying to deal with

Can't really argue with some of your thoughts but I'd rather have something a bit older second-hand for the same money; ok it might need a little money spending on it but if you choose carefully you'll probably get something that's a little higher quality. I just picked up a steel Bottecchia of indeterminate age (likely mid-70s) and it's great, super stylish too.

I’m 5’5 and it fits me well. My mom has the same one and she’s 5’9.
Interesting that it fits you well. But I suppose it's possible because everyone has different proportions, I'm 5'7" and it was fine for me. But I'm surprised that you don't like your trek more, maybe it needs a tune up, because really that should be a better bike. thanks for watching!

I've been looking for information on this damn bike for a long time now. Was gonna get a single speed to start commuting to work and saw this bad boy at Walmart for $98. Didn't buy it yet cause I was looking for information. Now I finally know the gear ratio and all that, plus more than I expected. Good work bud! Also, would you suggest this lovely cheap bike for a 10 mile commute to get started out commuting to see if I like it? Also, besides pedals and seat, what would you suggest to make it better for a longer commute?
hey Chris! You're welcome! Indeed it's surprisingly hard to find details on this bike, glad to have some of them documented here. As for a 10 miles commute, well for sure the bike can handle it, but also for sure there are quicker bikes that could do the job a little better, maybe with slightly steeper gearing. On the other hand if you are on a tight budget sure I'll work. And if you're really on a tight budget look for one used, I got this one for $60 and I do see them come up for around that price from time to time.
As Bruce found out - rotating handlebars - these bikes can be dangerous to ride out of the box or assembled at the store at worst and not ready to ride at best. They always come with something way too tight - hub bearings, headset or bottom bracket ready to crush bearings - spokes not tensioned - handlebars not tight - pedals not tight - etc. It would be great to see a complete tear down with a full account of what should have been done. Often these bikes can be good bikes if they are assembled correctly and used as intended.
yeah it's kinda crazy people are riding around like that, that they can sell them with pretty much always something wrong.
they'd be better off selling them only in a box with the per-assembled parts correctly assembled.

Is it possible to lower the seat even more than what you showed in the video? how tall are the seat and the top of the frame from the ground up? Will you recommend it to someone who's 5.5 ft without shoes?
yes you can lower the seat more, but I'm pretty sure if you're 5'5" you wont be able to stand over the top tube without tilting it to the side. Best thing would be to go to a walmart and try it.

okay so the top tube slants upward to the front slightly so it depends on where you measure it, but I measured it just a little bit in front of the seat, about where you might stand and I measured about 31.5". However I have 700cX35mm wheels on it now, which are both narrower and shorter than the silly ones it comes with, so you could probably add another .5' for the tires it comes with, making it about 32".

hey GR! I bought mine used, but I wouldn't expect it to come with all the tools needed. But really I'm sure you can gather the few required tools. If you're on a mega budget, maybe even a dollar tree will have what you need.

the tires are 700c, 38mm wide I believe.

@@A1Bokeh yeah, with bikes it's a huge mix, but these type wheels for sure called 700c, the tires are 38mm, but you can go as narrow as 25mm, but no wider than I'd say about 48mm, I'm running some 40mm on it right now that fit very nice.

hey there AB! Check out @1:10 I say the weight is 13.6kg or 30lbs. Then in the next video I changed the crank as well as tires and I believe I talked about the weight after that.

Hi Teresa, in my opinion it's a bit big, even I think I was on the edge at 5'7". However that said, there was a woman on one of the videos, maybe this one who said she was like 5'4" I believe and said that it fit her fine. My advice is to go to walmart and try it. Bring a few tools so you can adjust the saddle to the right height, or ask a worker to help with that. Go at a time it's not too busy.
I'm 5'6" and the top bar is a bit too high for me.. but I'm learning to tilt the bike when getting on and off. Really good ride if put together well and maintained.

700c wheel size
I have this bike and I bought 700c tubes for it because the tires pop very easily. but the bolts that keep the wheels together are welded into the fork and I can’t get them out, if by any chance you still have this bike can you please make a video on how to get the bolts out, and also I was looking online for airless tires so the tires don’t get flat again and the only option for the tires was 700x23c, and I don’t know if my tires are 700x23c
Hi Lulu. You mean you can't get the wheel off? After you remove the nuts, check if there are little tabs holding the wheel to the fork, they will be on the axle itself, maybe that's what's stuck. It really shouldn't be welded.

I have this bike bought it as a cheap option to go back to riding I am amazed by product, the max speed I have reached in a flat ground was 27 mph
for the money it's a lot better than I expected, and 27mph is pretty good, I guess that was for just a short period as I'm sure your legs were spinning like mad.

thank you! I would suggest to look up some youtube videos on how to replace crankset. it's not hard but does require a couple special tools.

For a cheap bike I rode it for half day but the handlebars kept getting loose might put a little rubber between the bike and handlebars are maybe some glue
Seems like the lose bars is a common issues, they should improve that.

hey Steven. I looked it up in the Kent manual, it says the bikes are made for max of 275 lbs. That said with gentle riding maybe one could get away with a little more.

I have this bike and have had a lot of fun on it. The chain came off the other week and I launched about 5 yards over the handle bars. Ouch. Regardless it’s a fun bike

most people that buy a "mountain" bike at wal-mart should get this instead. one gear is fine for folks riding around town, and it makes it so much less likely to break.

@@enigmaticreverieproduction5169 it's not really the wheel size, it's more the frame size. A lot of times they have this bike at walmart so you can check it out yourself, but I really think it'll be too small. You'll need to look for a frame size XL or something like that.

This bike go's by many names Kent thruster I bought Amazon adding rear rack and front baskets cargo bike
Nice setup sounds like. I think the only difference with the Thruster is it has the flip flop hub. As well as the paint and tire colors.
That's a ~52 cm frame and i can tell just by looking at tge video it needs another saddle and most likely different tires. And the list goes on.
People think cheap bikes are a good idea, until you realise the seat of your new 99 dollar bike feels like a brick and makes you lose feeling in your bottom.
