Apple should refresh the 12" macbook, stuff an M1 or perhaps the new M2 in it, give it thinner beazels, better webcam and a slightly thicker body for more battery and a scissor keyboard. Sell it at 799 or less if possible and you'd get the perfect travel, student or secondary laptop in the market.

I have a 2015 11 inch air, which granted, is a lil’ bit bigger and thicker than the 12 inch, but the new m2 air manages to be thinner than even the MacBook, not much bigger than my 11 inch air (it just has a little bit taller screen aspec ratio), all while having 2 thunderbolt ports and MagSafe.

As I'm typing this on a 12 inch, I absolutely love it. I got the 2017 final model new on ebay for like $600, sealed in box, a year and a half ago and have been very impressed. For my workload it still is very competent, and have been able to use apps like garageband and imovie for messing around with. Definitely recommend using a second monitor for stuff like that, but I can put it in a small case in my bag and take it anywhere easily.
And I may be in the minority but I actually love the butterfly keyboard and having a magic mouse. However, you have to get used to dongle life to use this product, but having a dedicated set up at home that i can just plug into a hub and be ready to go, then take with me for work elsewhere has a very "nintendo switch" like feel.
480p webcam is a downer, not gonna lie.
If Apple would create a similar model with the M1 chip, even if it kept the same keyboard, I would seriously consider upgrading.

I use it all the time for school and watching videos. However, occasionally I use it for photo editing in Lightroom (which it handles no problem) and video editing in Final Cut Pro X. I thought that editing my c4K files (at 237MBps) would be a bit too much. However, without adding too much to the FCPX project, it handles it really smoothly. If you really know Apples devices, one would only recommend to buy the 2017 model, yes it still has the dreaded butterfly keyboard; but at least its the 2nd generation, which gives you a better chance at avoiding the unavoidable sticky keys from the 2015-2016 model. On another note, the Intel HD Graphics 615 in the 2017 actually gives you the performance you might need, while the 2015 Intel HD Graphics 5300 barely runs the desktop with out making the CPU throttle down of it’s already lousy 1.1/1.2/1.3 basic speed. Plus the 2015 and 2016 have a more common issue where the display goes bad and you develop lines or in the 2015 model basically a black screen.

Also I'm getting the battery service recommended message and the battery does not last as long as it used to. But it still works and for basic tasks it's fine if a bit slow. Apple will give me $45 for a trade-in. It would be nice to see something like this re-issued but I'm not sure they could pull off the exact same form factor with a better keyboard.

Got this little piece of a gem for around $220 - core m3 with 256 GB SSD and 8 GB ram. It runs fine for basic tasks (document editing, youtube, videos, stream gaming etc.) - for those who wanna do heavy video editing, remember that this device was never in the first place designed to handle such demanding tasks. It was always known (and still is!) for its portability and display, which is where it truly shines! I simply love how light this ultrabook is, and with Bootcamp, its a match made in heaven for me!

The original macbook could fill the gap that the range lacks from the entry macbook. Maybe $699, all you would need is a traditional keyboard, reduced bezels, an Apple silicon, a macsafe port, two usb-c/thunderbolt 4 ports, one 3.5mm jack, and the 1080p webcam that modern models mount.

This laptop has keyboard failures, Ram failures, Usb failures, even CPU failures for heck's sake; I don't recommend, I would personally go for a retina MacBook pro. Those perform much better, and, yes, the form factor is great, but i don't think it warrants the gamble you're taking

I think this laptop was a good successor to the 11" MacBook Air that was released in the years from 2010 to 2015, and discontinued when this one released. The performance went down slightly from the previous year's small MacBook Air, but i don't believe that the performance was ever the focus of this size class of machine. It was all about being small, light, and easy to carry, and this took it even further.
It upgraded the display massively from the 11.6" 1366x768 panel while it sacrificed keyboard durability and port selection, where the 11" MacBook Air had two USB Type A ports, a thunderbolt port, a headphone jack, and the magsafe charge port. My max-spec 2014 model (with an i7-4550U, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD) fits down inside my purse with no problem at all and is just a wonderful thing to hold.
The bigger MacBook Air wouldn't see an upgrade from the old-school 2010 design until 2018!

And less problematic as I’ve seen and heard of they’re questionable reliability.
