@@nelsonwright7296 it’s mind-blowing to see how the “freed slaves” from North America arrived in Africa and essentially became slave-masters themselves in all but name. Right down to the plantation architecture. when I was taught about Liberia in school it was usually just a sentence or two in passing, and they always made it seem as if everyone assimilated and got along with each other very well.

Slavery was very much still going on up until at least 1926. The League of Nations made a report that year about how Liberia was one of the few nations to still have slavery. Now slavery might have been illegal on paper but it wasn’t enforced. The bad report caused the Liberian president to resign. That’s how there were slave masters.

A.B.Tolbert was, obviously, very intelligent, but I think he had a rather bizarre outlook with regards to governance and power. He talked about "ruling" Liberia and Africa, the latter eventually. He didn't seem to understand leadership, only lordship. Real governance is about leading and not ruling. This is where many of our presidents fail.
Also, he seemed to have been deeply involved in the occult. Not surprising at all, though, for that was commonplace among the elite of that era. Ultimately, I believe, this was the cause of their undoing. One cannot parley with the devil and go unscathed.

They took children from their parents all in the name of helping them but instead treated them horribly - don't get me wrong, some where nice. Children in the care or as we say back home, living with the Congo people- were force to carry their names on grounds that the indigenous' names were too "country." They did other horrible things as well thats why, when the coup toke place in 1980, the natives went after the Congos who happened the be the ruling establishment at the time and even some natives were also targeted because of their names. After what happened in the 80s people started changing their names back to their forefathers'.

I feel so disappointed in our so-called ancestors. No vision and structural policies set to keep this country on a positive trajectory even if the colonial masters did not give you the attention you desperately needed. Tubman and Tolbert had the opportunities to even change this country's paths, but they failed selfishly. Powers consciousness were the only key point in their lives from watching this. The ACS also did not do enough to setup this country's future like other colonials did for the countries they ruled or helped. Liberia has a very long way to go. I pray that a true leader with love for this country rise.

I agree, they had over 150 years to establish something not easily destroyed from within. Do you know Liberia didnt even have a million people in 1950? How can you drop the ball and not have a well educated country by 1980. Just to keep the money in your little group? It was so shortsighted. They just thought they had succesfully supressed the natives that none of the Black Equal Rights and Independence movements or constant African coups would have any effect on their system.
ACS was not a government but an organization and the settlement that became Liberia was their first project. They were just as inexperienced as the black settlers, just with a bit more education and the funding.

What A.B. Tolbert was rambling on about sounded weirdly cultish and quite frankly just plain bizarre. I know his family were Freemasons, as were most Americo-Liberians at the time, but it is my understanding that the Grand Masonic Temple of Liberia was pretty much a vaguely religious elitist club. This seems quite different from that. I wonder what on Earth he was even talking about.
