This video saved me. Thanks coming from the son of a 33 year IBEW member. I wish he was still with us to learn from your videos like I did. Thank you again, Sir!
You're a genius! Thanks a million for saving me time, money, and the plumber-induced embarrassment. Your videos are a lifesaver, and you're probably helping countless people every day. Keep up the fantastic work, sir! 👍👍
Hi Bob Thank you for making this video. It probably saved us a small fortune. I did notice that the Husky Internal Pipe Cleaner extractor worked better when the inside of the broken pipe was very clean and using a socket and wrench made progress much faster. The broken pipe did not move at first however persistence finally pulled it out of the brass flange. Do not give up trying to remove the broken piece and you will be successful. Thank you. Barry
Thank you for the demonstration. I busted a nipple with one of those extractors you don’t recommend and then bought the other extractor that you don’t recommend and it didn’t grip. 🤦🏻♂️ Now I’m going to hunt down a good one.👍🏼
I tried the Harbor Freight version of "D" and it snapped part of the nipple, so I just wound up taking a hack saw blade and cutting the rest out. Thank's for the video, it was very helpful.
Your gonna make me broke bob 😂 nah but i been looking for good extractors was thinking of ridgid but i just bought the 6 pc walton set. Thank you for showing us this set i appreciate you.
Thanks for the great video. For even smaller pipes, like 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch I imagine you can also use mini hack saw blade (mounted on hack saw blade handle) instead of extractor.
I don’t think you mentioned it in the video and it may be irrelevant to most people but A and D are what I would call internal pipe wrenches. The difference being, an internal pipe wrench can tighten as well as loosen. I’ve used the A version with some success as long as it’s not too tight. The C ones are worthless. I don’t think they could get out a hand tight nipple. It’s funny you mention B and D as what you use because the guy I learned under had those. With the type B, we didn’t call them nipple extractors. We called them ease outs. As for D, what I would call an internal pipe wrench, it is hands down the best. I wish I knew where to get some. I looked online a few years ago and found one but they wanted $80 for one. I’ve gotten along fine without it so I’m not paying that much. Anyway they called it something else. I wanna say they called it some sort of pipe vice. Whatever the wording was I got the impression it was used to thread short nipples. Nipples less than 6” where a normal threading vice won’t work
Hey Bob, really enjoy your videos thankyou for making these videos im a fellow plumber myself third generation my family business has been around since 1946. I heard that you said you used to use those extractors growing up ,did your family have a plumbing business also?
HI Bob, I am a home owner with an old steam radiator steam heat system. I have a radiator that the nipple is sealed the threads even after all the cutting and I may have damaged my threads but I don't know yet. If I did damage the thread can I tap it?
Greetings! Would you know if such a tool exists for removing 3" Threaded PVC? I had such a situation when the Waste Tank Dump Gate Valve on our RV got hit by Road Debris, breaking off the threads inside the Waste Tanks Female end! With great difficulty I used Channel-Locks to remove it, am hoping that something similar to this exists for larger diameters!
Currently attempting the husky extractor to try and get a rusty broken off shower arm out. You must need super human strength to get this shit out😭 it doesn’t want to budge. Trying to tap with a hammer at all angles and I get nothin😒 think I need some man power.. anyway, thanks for the video!
Is it safe to chisel out rusty galvanized pipe from cast iron vent stack? I have a small piece that rusted out along the bottom. I have tried a lot of PB Blaster, pecking and pipe wrench but very little sticking out of the stack since I had to cut the galvanized connecting it to an elbow going to sink drain. I am concerned about breaking the cast iron stack.
You have to be extremely careful when doing this. I had a similar situation two weeks ago and very carefully and slowly removed the remaining piece. Very important after removing the piece you must use a die to clean out and cut deeper threads. Cutting oil, WD-40 etc. if you crack the fitting you’ll be screwed!
Great advice. I have used the cut out method on drain pipe and worked well. This time I have a half inch steel water pipe with nipple broken about a quarter inch inside the pipe. Can not find an extractor, as I am in the Philippines right now. Where can I order extractor or sidjest how to get the job done. Thanks
This looks awesome. What would you suggest for a broken piece of threaded PVC, cemented into a metal pipe? It's similar to what you're doing here and I was thinking about collapsing as you suggested, but they've cemented the piece in.
Once you get into larger sizes the extractors become pricey and truth be told it's much easier to remove larger sized pipe by just cutting them and using a caping chisel.
@@BobsPlumbingVideos I certainly understand tooling becoming pricey. I started working on vehicles as a teen growing up with brothers and have accumulated lots of different tools over the years. Now I do that and all my own plumbing, carpentry, electrical stuff within reason. Of course I have both extractor options you consider useless as plumbing extractors lol. I will have to get a set of these good extractors in the video. I saw that huge tap you use in another vid cleaning out a big pipe and thought to myself "that thing sure looks spendy!"😄
Hi, Bob. Thanks for your video. Do you have advice for installing a brass close nipple in a wall (slightly recessed) for mounting a flush tub spout. Do they make these with reverse threads to install/tighten a nipple?
To my knowledge I've never seen a reverse extractor. I basically mount the nipple to the spout and tighten it by hand. You may have to step up to a shoulder nipple or greater depending on the wall thickness . Also depends on how much Teflon you're using as to how tight it gets.
Excellent video! Question, can I use the Walton tool for a broken shower arm, or should I only use the superior tool or gooseneck?? I ordered both, but the Walton is coming sooner
@@BobsPlumbingVideos The superior tool ended up coming earlier than expected, and I was able to extract the broken piece no problem… Thanks again for all you do! 🙏🏻
What can I do if the broken piece is not intact. Like if the broken piece is remnants of a rotted galvanized pipe in a brass elbow. How can I remove the debris lodged in the threads?
I just did this yesterday and used an NPT-thread tap. They’re a little hard to find but I got a set at Harbor Freight that has come in very handy. You engage the rotted stub with the tap and either power through it, or engage it enough so that when you back the tap up every quarter of a turn, the stub comes along with it.
The husky tools are hit or miss. I wouldnt trust their internal pipe wrench set, but ive seen some sets that look the same but are 2-3x as much so id imagine they have solid brands for those
Sorry, a troll here. You are making these processes far more difficult then necessary. I fully respect where you are coming from, but even the crap extractors you pointed out can work most of the time for residential plumbing fixes. Nipples typically don’t break off like the sawed off examples depicted. And your not going to have the opportunity to hold a fitting in a Rigid head to secure the fitting.
