THIS VIDEO HAS NO AUDIO. The copyright landscape on RUclips is still pretty finicky so I didn't bother (my channel is unmonetized but you never know). You can, however, sync up the Bad Apple!! The syncing isn't perfect, but this is a proof-of-concept.

=== Write-up ===
If anyone's remembered "MIDITrail", you'll know that it is a tick-based MIDI player, not a scroll player like Piano from Above. This means that the speed of scrolling in MIDITrail is based on the BPM of the MIDI. When the BPM speeds up, the speed of MIDITrail as a whole increases, and when it slows down, the speed of MIDITrail as a whole decreases. You can see some creators like Han SeRin take advantage of this by adding strategic BPM changes for theatric effect. This is in contrast to a scroll player like Piano from Above or Synthesia where the scroll speed is completely constant and the note's size is scaled relative to the BPM.
What Minelolpride discovered in these "variable speed scrolling" tick-based MIDI players is that one could abuse the scrolling mechanics by making the BPM really fast for a short period of time, causing the MIDI to essentially "skip ahead". In standard scroll players, the notes become extremely dense and clustered, but in tick-based players like the one shown in this video, the entire score moves forward. Using these principles, it is possible to achieve stop motion in tick-based MIDI players under the right circumstances. BPM and timing vary massively depending on what PPQ you're editing from and what FPS you're targeting.

man it just feels like i woke up or something.
what started as a "what if" idea about a year ago, i have finally got up and spent the past 2 weeks to make it real. it's a little scuffed around the edges but i'll be damned if it isnt the most work ive put into a MIDI yet. hell, the most work ive put in anything really.

The stop-motion concept of tempo is widely used in modern audio-styled MIDIs by TrinaLydia and Han SeRin, while I have thought of applying the same concept into an art MIDI, never have I expected it to be used to render a video.

it's still clinging on to life; in reality i'm just signal boosting an idea a good friend of mine's been working on! other than that i still just respond to comments and inquiries tbh
First off, how's this a 256 key midi?
Second, wow you (and mostly minelolpride, with the bpm manipulation) actually managed to sync up the midi's "frames" (almost) perfectly. The frames themselves are perfectly synced, but there's always one frame every second that occurs late.
Third, i'm really glad you're (semi) back!
256 keys is possible due to the MIDI standard's byte representation of notes (0x00-0xFF is 256 distinct values, but per the standard, only 128 or 0x00-0x7F are meaningfully supported in MIDI devices).
I didn't do any of this, I literally just uploaded his render.
But yeah, he did a wonderful job syncing the frames up. I thought the most we could do with tick-based renderers was do speed emphasis, but clearly we can do much more.
@@gingeas oh yeah... for the longest time i thought the limits from 0 to 127 seemed odd (since they can be represented by 7 bits), so i never really stopped to think where (and what) the rest of the values could be.
which now gets me to think, what is required to make use of the notes from 0x80 to 0xFF? since they're not meaningfully supported by midi devices, DAWs and midi editors (like domino) do not allow the user to go past 0x7F normally.
If the answer is hex editing, then total mad respect to minelolpride who made this...

@@gingeas This may be unrelated but, I was thinking if most pianos only have 88 keys (some even have 108 keys like the Stuart and Sons Grand piano), how do people make soundfonts that uses the general midi range? (128 keys)
