It's amazing how much more articulate and thought provoking television was in previous decades, these days it only rarely seems to reference "real life" and presents celebrities as some kind of plastic gods..
What a great interview, well articulated with a well rounded and informed points of view combined with integrity and humour. A true rarity that's sorely missed in today's society.
Brian Clough talks absolute sense here. There is life outside football/professional sport. However, the most difficult thing is to get over it, to get over not playing anymore, and to realise that you're finished. That is the challenge.
A reminder of what an incredibly articulate, intelligent and honest man Cloughie was. He paved the way for the Alex Ferguson's of the world. He empowered managers and nurtured players with utter passion but also with a clinical professionalism for the corporate nature of the modern game. If he were in his prime now, he'd be like Jose Mourinho....
Kennie Dowle he played better football than Jose but Mourinho is a beast but his style of football more akin to a George Graham imho. Cloughie was more like Wenger imho he would use minimal resources to full effect and would just play tidy pass and move football his players rarely rebel because they were treated properly and entertained by his presence. They loved and respected him shame these day’s Wenger was the last Dictator Manager but He was great and consistent dipped in the end and stubborn AF but proud that he entertained me for 22 years teams go in cycles Cloughie was true testament to that success is the man not the trophies 🏆
I've never heard a sportsman as open and thoughtful and articulate - at least not here in North America. I don't know whether there's anyone like him in the UK today - if there is let me know.
+Goalie There's not many, mate. Money has taken over (like the States?) and it's all sound bites and cliches. Clough was a remarkable man (and a lunatic) in many ways. His comments about footballers needing more perspective on life shows how far sighted he was. It is a huge debate in UK now and he was giving advice 30 years ago.
That's the way you conduct an interview. Ask a question, listen and let the man reply and then quietly steer him to getting the answer you want. Unlike today's biased shouting matches
Michael Sheen played both these men in movies, i wonder how it would have worked if they did a scene like this in The Damned United or perhaps Frost/Nixon Biopic
Most footballers were lacking upstairs in the past - and that’s why they became footballers. There were a few exceptions, of course. Matt Le Tissuer , etc. I sense it hasn’t changed - but I stopped watching professional football 10 years ago.
A one off manager, but also a bully & like many managers of his era took bungs, backhanders & skims. Back then 1950s & earlier pay was poor for players & managers, but as pay improved in 1970s & till now, they couldn't stop the habit. ie Harry.... It still goes on, just utter greed when fans pay £25 & more from hard earned cash.
You couldn't imagine an interview so frank and entertaining in the mainstream media today. More's the pity.
Clough is so straight and honest. There will never be anyone like him again.
And intelligent.
Took a bung.
@@trevorphilips6306 All managers did & some still do.
Straight and devious more like.
@@Buck555fast Alf Ramsey? Alec Stock? Bob Stokoe, I think not.

Could listen to him talk all night! What a great manager he was!
Brian Clough at his peak. This is when Cloughie was the greatest Manager in the world. Would have been the greatest England manager next to Ramsey.

What an amazing human being. He will be forever missed.

Searing honesty from Cloughie, fabulous

Jose Mourinho. Even Brian said he liked him.

Pep Guardiola. Fascinating man
Neil Warnock
Arsene Wenger is often very philosophical.
There needs to be a version of this with Michael Sheen playing them both....
Marvellous.

Straight talk.
So refreshing.
Clough understood the world.
Great man
Perceptive as usual!!!
Double Michael Sheen
Michael Sheen played both these men in movies, i wonder how it would have worked if they did a scene like this in The Damned United or perhaps Frost/Nixon Biopic
What a man
He saw things so clearly. At last football authorities are waking up to the mental well being of footballers.
Yeah, José for sure is the one that really has some of Brian's personality, honest, intelligeant & a big big charisma.
When Clough went to Forest they were mid table second division and within 5 years had won a league title and 2 european cups
Something completely mesmorising about Brian Clough in his prime. There was no wonder players jumped through hoops for him.
Yep. Everything he says is a nugget of gold, and he's right when he says it.
DAVID FROST IS A GREAT INTERVIEWER
11:50, I wonder what he'd make of politicians today!
An upstanding man
He had no idea back then that he would go on to manage Nottingham.
Right up there with Jock Stein, as the best British managers ever.
You are right to say jock stein. Other legendary managers include alex ferguson, bobby robson, matt busby, bob paisley, bill shankly and don revie.
David Frost is 35 years old in this interview? Looks 20 years older.
Absolutely 😮
Is the full interview out there anywhere?
Where is the rest of this?

Got a few bob.... Hints of a few bungs and brown envelopes.... I think Clough was great

prime cloughie
I would have preferred chatty chattyman Alan Carr to have done this interview (not)or Graham loudmouth Norton
Maybe Clough would say that Mourinho is more like him? :))
I'd like to think he wouldn't. Mourinho is a dishonest man who cannot take responsibility for anything
I would say that Clough is a sophisticated, British version of Mourinho.
Best every dry humour funny
Shou6hv been England manager
Bastard would let him
Big mistake
Clough, Farage, Enoch Powell we love them yet let them down because of political correctness. Start supporting the right guys
I think you missed the part where Mr. Clough talked about being a socialist through and through, how dare you muddy his name with those other two.
What the hell has the great Brian Clough got to do with Nigel Farage and Enoch Powell?
By the way Cloughie was a socialist
@@gatsbygoodwood2575 straight talking racists ha ha - Clough was a class above them.
