Putting Details on Curved Objects in Tinkercad!

  • Let's take a look at how to put details on curved objects. This means adding little things extrude or protrude from a cylinder or sphere, and actually making them curve along with the surface. It's a pretty simple technique that can take you pretty far. Let me know what you think!

Thank you! Very nice ideas! I was able to do what I wanted to do following your steps carefully. The difficult part being to pay attention on "what you select to group" each time. We will benefit more out of these if these were more specific. Again! Thank you much!

Nice yes I often use the donut shape set to a hole and place it around the object. Changing the wall thickness allows you to effectively crop the piece and trim off the excess.

I don't want to minimize what a lot of ppl are saying about this video, but you "must" do the entire playlist in order to be successful with doing the things he suggests in this video.
It's the only way I learned to do this video with somewhat ease, but I want to master the things he does, but I know that will come with time.
I hope no one is practicing what I call "drive-by learning " and replacing it with active participation then you will never learn the things he presented here.

Thank you for the useful tip! I didn't think of using the group tool like that. For the imprinted detail, I find the rectangle step redundant. The imprint method works fine without the extra step.

I am literally two days into learning Tinkercad and was totally lost and couldn't get the R2D2 type positive embossing to work, but after several hours of trial and error and research I figured out what he did. The key point is that after he extended the cyclinder hole vertically and used the huge red block to cover the side items he did the following:
    1. Made sure that the huge red block is solid and is selected (ie: clicked on it)
    2. Then hold down the shift key and select the outer tall "hole" cylinder (so only 2 items selected ie: the huge solid red block and the tall "hole" cylinder).
    3. Click on the "group" icon (causes the top of the "hole" cylinder to disappear).
    4. Now select only the huge red block and turn it into a "hole" (a huge rectangular hole).
    5. Now select everything (either drag the selector box over everything or do ctrl-A)
    6. Now click the "group" icon (and now you should see your curved positive embossed artifacts).
This technique will be very beneficial to me. Thanks!

It is unclear what your are clicking on, particularly at the end. I suggest that if you want to teach something slow it down make it crystal clear what you are clicking on and then what you're doing with the clicked items. I watched a couple of times and have no clue how to repeat what you did. Early in the video you said you'd forgot to do something and then made a correction that is entirely a mystery.

I know this is old, but I wanted to know how to curve the item before cutting it out. Doing it this way doesn't give a uniform cut, the sides of the object will be slanted. Imagine a bigger box almost the width of the cylinder, if it was an add on the slope of the sides would be wide, if you cut into it the sides would be sharp.

I'm a newbie and I can't seem to get past placing one object onto another. For instance: I'm trying to make a simple cartoonish cat. It has a spherical body with beady little eyes and nose, some triangular ears sticking out, etc. I drag out a sphere for the body - fine. Now to make a small, round eye, I've tried dragging out a half sphere onto the body, and I've tried with a whole sphere. When I drag this round eye onto the big sphere (body) it never seems to attach to the front. It goes behind, or it looks like it is attached to the front, but when I look from another angle, it's floating out in space far from the big body sphere, or it's touching but hanging out an angle. In every tutorial I watch, people just drag an object on top of another object, and it's attached. what am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help. I'm sure I'm overlooking something painfully obvious.

that means you grouped everything together at once when you were actually supposed to group just the hole and the outer box together. the step he says he misses was grouping the shapes and the cylinder into one object but to be honest its not super important if you dont move the cylinder or objects, more a convenience thing. after grouping just the larger cylinder hole and outer box you turn the box into a hole and then you group that with the actual cylinder with the objects in it.

You're definitely skipping a few steps in your verbal commands. This is what I was able to understand, but following these steps does NOT end up as it does in your video. What is missing?
    Create your shape.
Make the text. Flip it 90degrees.
Put in front of shape, extend so that it projects to front and back of object.
Duplicate main shape, scale it up by 1mm on each sides (however much you want it to hang over)
    Make outside copy a hole
Make cube to cover everything (material to cut out of)
Select inside hole copy, select cube, group them
    Select box, make hole
Select text and box, group them.

I agree with Exports. If you are going to teach, don't teach like you have been teaching to the same students for 4 years, people who google on RUclips to learn how to do things do it because they are new at this and have no clue how to do it, don't know the language and don't know how to maneuver around on the screen. You do it like you have been doing it for 10 years. That's great if you are teaching people who have also been doing this for 10 years. And yes, you made a mistake and corrected it and we have no idea what you did , what you corrected or how you corrected. you are going so fast that I moved on to another tutorial. It's to bad, you have a good knowledge base, but your teaching skills need a lot of work. Yes it may be boring for you, but is it about how fast you can spit out videos on RUclips or is it about the quality of the video and the number of followers you will eventually get?
