Thank you so much for a different perspective. I grew up in an abusive disciplinary household. I'm sad to say with all my desire to be anything but what I grew up with I was still an overly strict single parent. I love my adult children and grandchildren with all of my heart & want to support who they are. I was thinking this video came out too late to help me parent but I see that it can help me be a better grandparent. I sent this to both of my sons with a 10 yr old boy, a 16 month old girl & a baby on the way. Thank you so much 💕
@Susan Leishman My dad grew up like that, but my grandma was the most loving grandma you can immagine: she spoiled the grandkids, gave good advice and even covered up or even rarely sided with us, not to mention giftss and pocket money... Single parenting isn't easy, I have female friends that after divorcing became "generals". Sometimes you're just stressed out by work and problems and you become so fear of the future driven and that way you overdo it in trying to make things go right with your kids or enter in a mode of preventing worse things from happening so every mistake the kid makes is amplified... I know, it's awful, but aspecially if a single parent had a bad childhood aswell, it's easy to end up in those mechanisms.
Trying to implement the hugs and "because I love you". Thank you for this! My biggest struggle with my three year old is what to do when he won't listen to me, especially in a dangerous situation. He gets in his "play mode" and then whatever he wants to do he's going to do unless I physically remove him or force him to sit down with me which is not always easy to do with a 17month old and a pregnant belly.
Love the tips and examples! First and foremost I would add, Pray daily. We are not in control, God is. He is behind the scenes even when we don't see or acknowledge him but he hears our prayers and he knows our path. Whether it is good or bad. We are to teach our kids with Love about and like Jesus did, but it is God who gives the salvation. John 14:27 is a good daily reminder of Peace.
You could totally do one on prioritizing child’s mental health. My 10yo has decided he wants to skip school. Like not go every again. The last two days he has managed to elude us, and I know that dragging him by force isn’t going to make matters better. I keep trying to find a root cause, but he denies all the causes I can think of (bullying, for example). I’m inclined to give him a few days off, spend more time doing stuff with him, and make him work (he cleaned his room all on his own today, first time in ages). But his dad is determined that he go to school. At 10, I know missing a week or two won’t kill him. He’s bright enough to catch up when he wants to. But forcing him just makes him shut down. It was not having his phone for 2 days that motivated him to clean his room to get a couple of hours on it. There is relational stress in our marriage that is causing stress in the kids, and nothing I can do about it (just ask my counselor! I’ve tried!). Anyhow, thanks for letting me vent.
Your book and videos help so much navigating my single mom life. I would love more tips (or reassuring words) on sleep difficulty with toddlers. Thank you so much for what you do.
I’ve recently started watching your RUclips videos I watched this one tonight and it hit home as I tend to nag and tell my 17 yr old all her faults. Or things she may do wrong. :(. I made a list of everything I feel she does right and what makes me proud. She really truly appreciated it and thanked me before bed again for doing that. Thanks for your words of wisdom and humor while teaching :)
You are a wonderful example of grace and fun and beauty and decency and I have been so touched as I read your book. I really feel like we would be best friends if you lived in Michigan. Come visit. There is always room for you in my home.
I loved your video. I am a mother of 4 & lots of your tips I already do them. For example: I aways ask them questions about how was their day in school & if something goes wrong I would tell them that is a way to fix it if not dont worry about it because it will pass with time. I love being a mother no matter how overwhelming it can be from time to time. I also explain to them why I lecturing dumb at the moment & tell them I love you & I want you to be an adult that is ready for the world no matter how hard it is at times. Thank you. I needed that r.n I have an 11 yr old who started having outbursts this week.. Today he ran (literally) ahead of us(at least still to school?..) With no one to ask for advice or reassurance... Your videos are truly a blessing, I don't feel so alone. Lame-i know, but thanks💌
With my former step-son, he'd got mad at me because he failed a couple of his classes and was academically suspended from college, he was yelling at me for pushing him into a nursing program he would rather be doing IT. After a lil bit of humbling him, he said that I forbid him from doing anything with computers, I corrected him and he just went oh. A few weeks later he found a local school, and he was set to go through the IT program and he ended up getting his Bachelors. I never called him a failure, but I made sure he understood why he failed, and he accepted and understood he was responsible for himself, his choices and how his life ends up.
Hi ! I just got a notebook for my parenting notes and I took all of this recommendations to my new notebook! Thank you! Is really difficult to find solid and short help on this topic and most of the parenting classes are $$$. This should be free since it will be a basic skill and this will be so soooo helpful for all of us as a community since a high % of adults with many mental conditions are due to childhood and of course to all those skills that we as parents didn’t had. Maybe this idea will be nice for your channel because I have never seeing videos like this before, you as a parent with your recommendation and include an expert or maybe a few expect and a few parents that have overcome issues with kids. In my case I have a 5 y/o with difficult behavior and it was being hard. Just idea ! Thank you for the video!
Hi Kristina, can you please make a video going in deeper into the it's not permanent? I have a 6 year old little girl who both before and after school cuts up especially towards her little brother. My son is having a really hard time communicating his emotions seeing as how he is 3 and it is both draining and frustrating for me. I am trying to really be there for the both of them but I am having a lot of trouble figuring out how.
