I’ve got Whitney and she’s one of my favorite dolls. I really love that silver top/jacket and the wired cape.
I had no idea she had her own commercial, that's so cool! She was my gateway into collecting as an adult a few years ago. I was desperate for her as a kid but could never find her - only ever saw her fashion on clearance and was so in love with the box art (first edition like yours), I thought it was so sophisticated and still do :) I just wish her dress was more like the prototype. Thanks for the review!
Yeah…the prototype dress seems to be that material they used for Day To Night Barbie’s bodysuit. It’s a lot prettier.
I know, I had saved it thinking it was for Barbie. I was so confused 😂 Ahh, I had a feeling she was one of those HTF dolls. Like Teresa always was when I was a kid. Yeah, the prototypes are always better 😂 Thank you ❤️😊
i love her i had her when i was 10 years old, she was my favorite and she still is this day, I want to buy her again someday
She’s really pretty! 😃 I have heard of her but only a little. Loved how you put the commercials in, they were really cool to see. Dolls like this make me extra wish I lived in that time, haha. Would love it if you did a story video with that little book! I’m actually interested to hear the story. 😄
Thank you, I think she is very pretty in a simple way. Not the outfit of course, but the face and hair 😂 I always love the commercials. They really set the doll in the period. I didn't say that well but I have brain-fry at the moment 😂 Yeah, I may do the story at some point. It is much longer than I had expected 😊❤️
She's so 80'S!!! Especially with those cool feathered brows! :P So great to see the Steffie face continue on from the 70's this way.... Yeah, they should have made her a redhead, especially with that turquoise and silver gown! (Though that two-toned brown hair is great! Reminds me a little of Fashion Photo P.J. though that is more subtle and streaky.) That spiral braid reminds me of Beauty Secrets Barbie. That illustration on the box reminds me of the ones in the sewing patterns catalogues from that time;- same technique. None of my Superstar era gals from the late 70's have that leg problem (Spots??Fishy odor???!!! Ewww!) so is that an 80's thing? I love that silver pleated thing the most! Very Thierry Mugler from that era! (R.I.P.) So is that huge shouldered bolero jacket. I also LOVE the instruction booklet illustrations, they are always great! Oooohhh and a comic book! I wish they came with the earlier dolls... (though yes, those illustrations are funny! Skipper's 'Kath Day-Night' afro! LOL)

The spotty legs are definitely a 1987-1989 thing. And it seems like it was a problem at multiple manufacturing facilities, which makes me wonder if it was a raw materials supply issue, rather than a manufacturing process issue.
Jewel Secrets Whitney and Fashion Photo P.J. use the same hair colors, but in reverse. Whitney's dark hair is everywhere except the hairline, whereas P.J.'s lighter hair is concentrated along her center part. But the two colors are virtually identical on both dolls.
The brows are my fave! I wish they did that a lot more. It is so interesting. It was probably a pain to do though. Yeah, It's strange to think of her as a continuation of Steffie/PJ. She definitely fits into that category. Oh yeah, and BS Barbie, you are SO right! Oh! And the illustrations does look like those 80s/90s pattern illustrations! I hadn't thought of that. I usually ignore those patterns 😂 Yeah, the fishy smell. It is the second time i have experienced it now and both times it was a late 80s item 🤷🏼♂️

@@DeanReen: Loved how you cut away to Demi, Jennifer and most of all, Brooke! I had such a huge gay-boy crush on her back in the early 80's! I actually used to collect clippings of her back then and a Greek gal in high school used to also clip things out for me in the Greek magazines her mum used to get (she was a massive celeb over there too and those mags had a lot of unseen photo shoots of her that I never saw anywhere else.) I can tell you it confused a lot of kids in high school over my 'orientation!' LOL
Wow, the Australian version of the commercial reminds me of the style of the very first Barbie commercials! I love this Whitney's feathered eyebrows--so 80s. :)
Oh wow, I totally see that! Like those ponytail commercials with the narration and all that. So cute! I do wish I could have found a better version of it though. The feathered brows are the most! 😍

Love her, have her ,but ill never get over the actual dress we got as opposed o the one pictured on the box and in the commmercial, it looks so much more glamorous than what they boxed her in .innate when they don't match what the box shows. I bet it was a cost thing or they didn't get the material in time before production just the prototype one.

I had this doll and exactly the same thing happened with her legs. It happened to so many of my vintage boxed dolls. I ended up just washing her because they runny paint smelled terrible. Thank you for being honest about it too! I ended up selling her but she was gorgeous.
I still have mine. It doesn't bother me too much. I love her ❤️😊

Beautiful doll!💜 I have only the blue dress, unfortunately she did'nt came out to México. "Vitiligo" is common in this era dolls., China, Philippines, etc., NOT in México!

Whitney dolls are my all time favorites in the Barbie universe. I have all of them ( even repeats ) except Ultra Hair , I just can’t afford her.
I’m with you , Whitney outshone Barbie in each and every line she appeared in.
My theory is that Mattel discontinued her for that reason. We had Christie,Kira, Midge and Teresa for years , so why such a short life for Whitney? My conspiracy theory is Mattel had to eliminate Whitney because she was superior to Barbie 🤓
I had to change the body on one of these because of the spots on her legs. Thankfully the bent arm superstar bodies in this skin tone are super easy to find.
The weird thing is my other example had perfect legs. Maybe a production country kind of thing.
She is so elegant compared to Barbie who is more cutesy/tacky looking IMO.
I haven't even looked into Ultra Hair. She would probably be my next choice though. She really was something special wasn't she!? 😍 It wouldn't surprise me if you were right about Mattel cancelling her because she was too popular. It sounds like the stupid thing Mattel would do 😂🤷🏼♂️ Why not just slap the Barbie logo on it and say that Barbie decided to dye her hair? Yes, I actually did come across a spare body that I have put aside for her just in case. The spots don't seem as bad now but I will definitely keep an eye on them.
I love Jewel Secrets Whitney, I bought her the day she appeared on store shelves in 1987. Well, the day I first saw her, anyway. Over the years I have collected several examples of this doll, including one that came to me in perfect condition, complete with jewelry and box and all the other pieces, but her glorious hair had been chopped into a bob. I even had the cut off hair with the doll. Well, I love JSW, so I completely rerooted her with a very good color match to the two hair colors, and she looks amazing now. The only thing that gives away that she's been rerooted is that I left her hair slightly longer than the factory hair on my other dolls, and her hair is more board-straight than the wavy original set. But the color and texture match of the doll's new hair is actually kind of perfect. I have another, more playworn example of the doll that I've considered rerooting as well, as she has had a hair trim and what hair she has is rather dull with a lot of breakage from brushing. But this is one of those dolls I can't pass up if I see it at a doll show or whatever. Interestingly, Jewel Secrets Whitney uses the same hair colors that were used on 1978 Fashion Photo P.J., and I've got one of those waiting in my reroot queue as well.

I have hair and dolls waiting but it is just so scary 😂 I would pick up everyone I saw too 😂❤️ I honestly think Whitney is prettier than PJ. I hate to say it but 🤷🏼♂️ PJ is SO expensive and has barely any colour. I did want her but not bad enough to pay the prices people want for her 😭

She's very pretty and indeed better looking than Barbie, the price would be about $51 in today's money and apparently that is an already discounted price judging by the sale sticker that was used!
I always remember Barbies being quite expensive and having more than a handful being a big deal with my sister and her friends as usually girls only had a few and anyone having over 10 dolls was like wow you must be rich or something... LOL XDDD
I have a couple of aunts that are around mine and my sibling's ages and they had drawers full of Barbies while my sister only had like 7-8 dolls and we were in shock they would cut and dye their hair with markers and completely wrack them... LOL
My sister was so careful and precious with her's... XDDDD
I know right!? SO expensive! I would have died seeing the price as a parent back then 😂 Dolls when I was younger could be quite expensive, but a talking doll would be around $40 AUD which would be less in USD. Oh, I was always precious with my dolls too. We didn't get many. It was around the age of 9 or 10 that I started saving up to buy them myself. Kids that get them left right and centre just don't understand how precious they are.

Yes, it is a shame really. I hope they do and they do better than they have been with the Steffie sculpt. They keep making the lips too small and the eyes buggy.

Congrats!!Loved the review and how in-depth it was!❤ I was just going to say the plastic and rubber degrading with age is unfortunately part of the vintage doll collecting for us :(. Sometimes, I wonder how toxic all that stuff is, and should we actually be wearing gloves when handling some of the older dolls🤔? Actually, I remember I stumbled upon an article online (at the time when I was dealing with sticky, smelly legs on my older Takara dolls) where they did the testing and found considerable amount of different kind of metals in the degrading vinyl of older dolls. Not to be a Debby downer, but it is a bit alarming 😱. I'm still collecting vintage dolls of course 😅

I never let kids touch my dolls or let animals near them either. I don't care what happens to me though as long as I am enjoying myself. And gloves are just too fussy for me. I know some people that use them and I think it is just miserable 😂🤷🏼♂️❤️

Every time i see that price, it immediately takes me back to my childhood when i began collecting dolls independently. One of the first Barbie items that i bought for $19.99 was a "Stars 'N Stipes" Ken & Barbie gift set.
$20 was my weekly allowance at the time , and i remember bringing a penny with me for the tax. Lol

Oh my! And that was for TWO dolls! I started getting $20 a fortnight in 2004. I would have to save up a while to get the things I wanted 😂 I was hoping I remembered that about the spots correctly! I have actually noticed they are already a bit lighter after washing them. I have a replacement body anyway just in case. Oh, I would LOVE to get Derek! I want Olimpico Ken more but I doubt I will ever be able to justify getting him.

The spotting on the legs is literally the plastic starting to disintegrate, which is very accelerated by her being in a box with no air for decades. I think there's no way to fix it
Yes, I think you may be right. The spots on my doll have faded a lot already though. So much that I can barely notice it, thank goodness! 😂❤️😊

She's really cool- I don't think I've seen her or anything from this line before. In 1981 I was obsessed with Clash of the Titans, and would have loved to have a Barbie that fit into that world. By 86 I'd moved on, though.

@@DeanReen I had only moved on from buying Barbies because I was into my teens by then, but never moved on from Clash of the Titans! I work in stop motion animation and Ray Harryhausen was a big influence for me.
She is stunning even though she has a spots on her legs. I love Jewel Secrets Barbie because she is one of the Superstar girls that reminds me of my childhood. My playmate used to have My First Ballerina Barbie way back in 1988. She and her father bought her in mall. Aside from My First Ballerina, she also bought a fashion that comes in Jewel Secret Barbie line. The yellow gown with brim hat.

I did have a donor body but the arm broke off! 😭 Her legs aren't too bad now. After washing them and letting them dry they seemed much better 😊
