  • The "BollAero 18" is a compression ignition (aka model diesel) 1.8 c.c. model engine designed by Chris Boll for home construction from bar stock materials.
This example has ben completed by a local enthusiast to very high standard. His prior experience is in making live steam engines.
It is true to the published plan. The result is excellent in all respects. It was the first build of a model diesel engine for the constructor. The only non-home made items in the engine are the machine screws fastening the front housing, rear cover and cylinder jacket to the block.
It starts easily, runs smoothly and generally performs very much like a Mills 1.3 model diesel engine.
More details about this engine and still images may be found using the link below. Plans are freely available over the internet.

    Fuel Composition:
    25% Castor Oil
    35% Di-ethyl Ether (solvent grade)
    38.5% Kerosene
1.5% 2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate (Amsoil Cetane Boost)

Its a great first project!! Some made the tank at the rear with different port configuration. Would be even nicer in my opinion with a anodized red head...but of course..now its straight from the lovely plan!
    Great runner!

Hi Peter This one, as a 'first build', was exactly as per the plan. The Builder is building another one which will feature a home anodised cooling jacket. It may also have beam mounting lugs. He advises he is also going to build an ML Midge, also with beam mounting lugs.

I watched the video of your BollAero a while ago. Very nicely executed.

You have made a very nice job of my first engine design, it runs well and responds nicely to the needle valve and compression screw. Will you put it in a plane, or just enjoy running it onmthe bench?

Thank you for your comment Chris. The engine shown was made not by myself, but an enthusiast whom I know. He has now made a second example of the BollAero 18 which we have also run. It performs just as well and has a radio control throttle adapted from a FUJI .099 glow R/C engine which works very well. It idles down to 2,600 rpm steady and picks up cleanly when the throttle barrel is opened. The engines will be flown. I am going to donate my Performance Kits "APEX Mk. 14" to the owner so he may fly it. My Apex has 40 grams of lead in the nose with an Aurora Mills 1.c.c. 'goldhead'. Once the BollAero 18 is installed in it, the lead can be removed as it will no longer be necessary.

What is the maximum weight of aircraft it can lift ? I mean like payload..

    • @fiery1962
      @fiery1962  5 лет назад

Probably about 500 grams, although it depends on the design.

Chris Boll what is the taper the cylinder has from one end to the other is it about 0.03 mm or .001 thou

@@jasonburns1407 I don t measure it, if you start lapping from the bottom you tend to get a slight taper anyway. Gives a good seal at the top and less friction at the bottom.

Hi there. Great job on the engine. What size prop is it turning? I have just completed the same engine and it's a runner :)

Where can you find the Di-ethyl Ether at? I made 2 of these engines and having a hard time finding Di-ethyl Ether. Thank you

Chemical Supply businesses stock it. It may or may not be sold to the public depending on what Country you live in. John Deere Premium Starting Fluid is a good alternative if Di-ethyl Ether is not available to purchase.

How big is the taper on the cylinder from one end to the other when you machined it?

Gázolajjal jobb a hatásfoka. Én petróleum helyett azt használok.
