The dad is essentially an original character created for the films. In the comics, Shang-Chi’s dad was Fu Manchu, who was a completely separate character from the Iron Man villain The Mandarin. Both of them were (originally) caricatures steeped in racist stereotypes so the filmmakers here decided to completely reimagine them into someone new. Presumably they weren’t trying to catch more heat after how they fucked up with the Mandarin in IM3 and the whitewashing of the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

You think us Asians are so fragile we can't even acknowledge we talked in accents in the past? That sounds like white people projecting their insecurities to me.
Although Tony Leung did a good job w his English here (I've never seen him speak English in any of his other movies) he still has a bit of an accent. It's not just fine, it's more than fine. The guy who played Death Dealer is the stunt man who gave martial arts training to Simu Liu.
The Dweller in Darkness is one of the major evils of the Marvel universe. He's normally a Dr Strange villain.
Both the Mandarin and Shang Chi's original father were racist "yellow peril" characters. For Asian-American comic book fans, any change from the source material is a good thing, including Trevor Slattery. Mostly, I'm happy about what's not in the movie as much as what's in the movie. I'm glad they kept the part about Shang Chi being raised to be an assassin, then turning on his father.
In Marvel comics, there are multiple species of dragons. Although the movie might change the rings (further), in the comic books, they were created by a technologically-advanced species of dragon for controlling their space ships.
The song Hotel California is about the American Dream of suburban living, and about how it's just a debt trap that leaves you unfulfilled. In the movie, it's a metaphor for Shang and Katy rejecting the standard life everyone else expects them to live.

I low-key now want an Iron Fist movie. To differentiate from Shang-Chi or the Netflix version, the movie could strictly focus on K'un-Lun and the legacy of the Iron Fist. We could meet Lei Kung the Thunderer and Davos alongside Shou-Lao the Undying(yes, another dragon but he plays a much more minor role). The whole journey of this film could be Danny training and becoming the Iron Fist before leaving for New York. Davos's motivation could be becoming the Iron Fist because everyone around him- especially since Lei Kung trained every Iron Fist that came before and is Davos's father, expects him to. Davos and Danny develop a strong friendship; but the story, culture, and training regimen of K'un-Lun slowly tear them apart from one another to where the Iron Fist becomes the only thing important to them. The film climaxes with Davos beating Danny, but the judges of the fight skew towards Danny because he's a Rand(tying into his father's previous relationship with the people of K'un-Lun) and Davos is devastated to be betrayed by his people but to add insult to injury, his father is the deciding vote. When Davos tries to take the Iron Fist out of emotional irrationality, he loses to Shou-Lao while Danny succeeds. Outcast from his home and his father, Davos plots revenge as he becomes Steel Serpent and meets the Crane Mother in the end while Danny chooses to leave K'un-Lun where he finds out he's part of a rich family's company at Rand

They keep making new shit but people are only going to care if it’s easily quantized, memetic, narratively identifiable so that the story can be told with it’s building blocks rather than constantly making new ones.

@@Souledex So are you saying that because Shang-Chi is Asian that he exists in the MCU? He's had a history of racist stereotypes and came out at a time when Kung Fu was popular. So did Iron Fist. What makes Danny interesting is his lore, not his skin color. K'un-Lun, Shou-Lao, the heritage of the Iron Fist, the 8 Capital Cities of Heaven(which they could just simply make Taa Lo one of them that connects to Iron Fist), his friendship with Luke Cage, Defenders, plus the Heroes for Hire, and the fact that he was a part of the first interracial couple with Misty Knight(which almost everyone seems to ignore) are a part of Danny. If we're going by that logic, then why does Black Panther exist in the MCU?

2 THEORIES I've read and loved:
    1) the Ten Rings were created by the Eternals. In Eternals, Phastos created bands to form Uni-Mind among the Eternals and the Celestial. There's probability that Ten Rings could be a prototype or one of Phastos' inventions since we got to see in Eternals that Phastos fought Ikaris with what seem to be high tech rings. Plus there were originally 10 Eternals.
    2) Apparently there was a Black Widow cameo that was very easy to miss, when Shang Chi and Katy walked into the sister's place. And since Black Widows from the solo movie have escaped the Red Room, it's possible that they get invited by the sister to join the new Ten Rings, thus the ladies addition.

In the comics the Mandarin found the rings in the crashed ship of a dragon like aliens called the Makluans. One of them still lives on the earth named Fin Fang Foom

If you remember the beginning it was life lesson...they said the ten rings could be used to for good or ill...his father chose to use the rings for power and self gain..but in the end it brought him grief....his son realized their true purpose to vanquish a great evil and not to serve a person's wants and desires. In the end the father did realize as you mention his wife's style being used on him by his son.....his wife was never really gone..she lived on in their children.

They did change/alter the Manderin character from the comics.
Like you said the Mandarin was a long time Iron Man nemesis (and Shang chi villian) but for the movie, marvel retconned it so that the Mandarin wasn’t necessarily an iron man villain but instead was Shang Chi’s father. This was done for better story telling obviously but also due to the fact that Shang Chi’s father in the comic used a lot of racist tropes.

I'm ok with how they changed the power of the Rings for the MCU. In the comics the Mandarin held each Ring on a different finger giving him ten different powers.
Left thumb "Daimonic" emit energy along the electromagnetic spectrum. Right "Remaker" rearrange atoms/molecules speed up or slow down their movement.
Left index "Incandescence" emit infrared radiation creating heat blast of varying temperature. Right "Influence" creates a concussive force; impact beam.
Left middle finger "Lighting" emit electricity blast of varying current. Right "Spin" uses air creating a high speed Vortex beam.
Left Ring finger "The Liar" magnifies the wearer's own psionic energy; mentally control people, transmit orders, create illusions. Right "Spectral" creates a disintegration beam that takes twenty minutes to recharge after using it.
Left pinky "Zero" emits waves of cold temperatures creating ice blast; can lower the temperature of objects zero. Right "Nightbringer" can create an area of absolute darkness absorbing all light within it.

I don’t know if this guy exists in the comics as his own character, but the Mandarin is a vastly different character and one of the main villains of Iron Man, in a technology versus magic kind of way, although I think the rings were still alien tech in the end. Also, the rings are pretty different, since he wore them on his fingers, and I think each ring had a different power.
Upon doing a little bit of research, apparently the reason they made he rings different in this was so they wouldn’t be compared to the infinity gauntlet

I feel like the end credit scene was her taking over the Ten Rings in the same way that Yelena Belova was taking over the Widows if you can follow that. Not necessarily evil but if they’re good? It’s to be seen. Shit maybe they go the antihero route where they operate in a grey area.

He was a huge villain in early Marvel comics and an Iron Man villain primarily. You were spot on. He was also a crap ton more powerful with the original Ten Rings on his fingers. The rings themselves had crazy unique powers, similar to the infinity stones, and can be used in conjunction with one another to do crazy combos. They were kind of like Infinity Gems Lite. Throw in Mandarin having a genius level intellect, being a martial arts master, having an international syndicate behind him, and it made him a serious problem to deal with.

Kacee and Anthony, I am glad that y'all watched it.
One word to describe Shang-Chi? *Magical.*
I cannot believe I waited this long to finally see what everyone was talking about. I'm absolutely kicking myself for not having watched it earlier. I'm also upset at myself that things were spoiled for me without having seeing it.
Now, after finally watching it, I am freaking in love with this movie and its mythology. Also, love the mystery and cosmology surrounding the Ten Rings (and other mystical weapons coming later on). Also loved how tragic it was.
Wenwu/The Mandarin is one of the most compelling MCU villains I have ever seen. So heartbreaking, so menacing and so formidable.
Shang-Chi himself? I automatically welcome him as a future Avenger. Also, the possible return of the Ten Rings organization, now under the management of Shang-Chi's sister, is quite intriguing.
Also, now that I have seen it, I can now see why Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (aka Avengers 5). I now have the utmost faith in him delivering another fantastic MCU movie.
I not only cannot wait to see this again, but I cannot wait to see an eventual sequel.
God, this movie is so amazing!

So the thing about the villain in this movie, is that it kinda has a bit of history which might be what was incorporated into this movie, and why this movie is banned in China (for honestly understandable reasons).
The first version was that it was based off another author’s character of a stereotypical Chinese villain. In the OG I believe, Shang Chi was mixed race, white on his mother’s side and Chinese on his dad’s side. The mother being the good part of his family and the dad being his bad part, as he was a villain. Eventually he fought his father, mightve killed him, and then retired to live in China.
China doesn’t like the history of the story and it’s roots, for obvious reasons, being that of a Europeans demonizing them, and the original version of the villain was a very important character in European culture. So with this movie, they went about making the characters deeper and understandable, and fixing the problematic aspects. China still didn’t care, the culture and its effects was still relevant to them and had been so, so they banned the movie.
This is why in the comics, Wen Wu is not a good guy, but here is significantly more complex and empathetic. I like this version more.

Everytime I see this movie, it is another sad reminder that Kim's Convenience, an awesome show, got canceled way too soon and to make it worse, it was not canceled due to low ratings. Anyway, I find it interesting that the Marvel One-Shot "All Hail the King" did not hint at this movie & whether you saw it or not, seeing Trevor again was still a nice surprise. But yet, at the same time, if you did see it, it added a nice transition to this movie. Speaking of Adamantium, I have wondered for quite a long time now that when the X-Men do get introduced to the MCU, I wonder how it will be introduced and if Vibranium will still remain the strongest metal in the MCU or Adamantium will be it instead. If Marvel Studios still had the rights to X-Men all those years ago, Adamantium would've been used as the strongest metal and not Vibranium. But, now that Fox is with Disney, I wonder what they will do now.
