The container idea for partners is pretty genius. We ALL need less stuff, not more storage to hoard things we don't use. I've heard minor hoarding described as deferred decisions (re what to do with the item) - if we keep deferring decisions we end up in trouble. I'm now far more mindful of what I buy, which is better for my finances and also for the environment.
Brilliant! I always get overwhelmed with cleaning since I would get stuck decluttering and organizing at the same time. So confusing. Now I understand: declutter 1st, then organize 2nd then clean. THANK YOU!!
I so related to the story about your grandmother, because I come from a family of packrats. I've been radically decluttering my apartment for this past year, and one of my milestones was when I emptied my oven. I've never experienced an oven that didn't have cookware stored in it! Now I can just turn it on when I need to use it without having to move pots and pans elsewhere first.
I'm glad I found this video. I happened to get her book a couple months ago and have loved the change in my place. I had tried to clean & organize a spot and had read that I needed to empty everything out, clean and then put back only what I wanted to keep. Well I emptied out, cleaned...but then got interrupted, so ended with a bigger mess than when I started! Her method really helped me sooo much!
I have a container for my "gently worn" clothes so that I don't have to put them back in the closet, just in case, and can pull them out on another day and wear it without guilt for not hanging it up, keep my closet fresh and not just throw things on some chair somewhre.
I have been watching Dana for awhile now, as well as her collaborators, Cas at Clutterbug and the Minimal Mom. I love these women and have learned so much from them. Thank you for your videos!
Two of my favorite motivators. Best five step tips to start to remove trash first. I learned long before that pretty boxes become more clutter. I discovered also that I must make “neatness” at end of day so I don’t wake up to a disaster scene.
~Her approach on decluttering as a way of organizing might just be what i need, cuz ive noticed after years of being disorganized, if i do try to put things in logical places, then i cant find them?!~I remember where they were before, but not the new 'better' place i put them~Maybe i dont have to change where things are, but just have less stuff?!~That might just work!~
Hahaha!! Binge watching at this point. I was muddling through my various videos of The Minimal Mom, Clutterbug, and Dana K...when I discovered you last night. These ladies have been my inspiration for about a year now. I'm surprised I didn't come across you sooner, but very glad I finally have. Awesome work!! Thanks for all you do!!
Thanks for featuring Dana @ A Slob Comes Clean on your channel. I discovered her blog a few years ago and followed her journey, and she was inspiring (and also a lot like me). Your channel has helped me learn to manage specific tasks and stay on schedule. Thanks to both of you. My house is far from perfect. but it's livable and no one gets hurt (or lost) walking from one room to the next, so there's that. Decluttering can be overwhelming and daunting at first, but so liberating. Organization is easier after that.
Thanks for your kind words of encouragement and support. Yes, Dana is amazing and has a great way of presenting ideas that make it possible and easy to declutter. Congrats on remanaging your belongings for safety in your home. I'm so proud of you. :-)
Angela & Dana, first off, THANK YOU BOTH!!!! I literally just found this video, and it resonates powerfully. I've been following Angela for a while, but just discovered Dana's work. Literally. Two days ago. Ordered the audio version of her book, and while listening was able to throw away a ton of food my Mom bought before she went on her Big Trip in 2015. Those were things she valued, so I felt that it was a betrayal to consign them to the trash. I am getting better, and thank you both for helping me take baby steps to unhoard my grief.
Angela, Thank You for helping us out here by sharing such important information with us! Bless you! I am always overwhelmed! You have helped! Thank You!!!
Just found you, first video, not even through it yet and so much makes sense. This may be the breakthrough a lot of people need including myself. I'm always trying to organize stuff, and my plan on paper is good. But that's as far as it goes. Thanks for sharing, and I can't wait to see what else you have.
I am a caregiver for a young man with special needs. He doesn't care whatsoever about how messy and overly cluttered his room is. He's always losing things. A while back I bought him a lot of fabric storage cubes and he fills them up to the brim with all his stuff, and it's nice to be able to show him when the bins are full and it's time to go through it and discard some things. He tends to save everything that comes into his hands. It is NO fun trying to deal with that room each week!! And he can tear everything apart and scattered all over the floor in minutes! Right after I spent hours cleaning up! 😩 It's frustrating that he can't clean it up himself and it falls on me. Also our shared spaces, the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, storage closets. But, I started decluttering my stuff today. I am worried that will just give him more space to collect mess though! It's hard when he doesn't understand nor care about all the junk!
I know this video is older but thank you! I have been following Dana since she started with her hilarious videos. Iam so thrilled you 2 teamed up for this interview.
What a helpful concept! By the way, my walk today ended up being brisk after all; windchill of 28°! But I walked further than I had planned. Now we're having a blizzard! I'm just gonna hunker down and binge watch your videos. Oh, and I did another thing I haven't done in ages; made a pot of soup. I like to make soup. Use whatever is on hand. So dinner is ready. And lunch for tomorrow. Funny, I forgot to take a nap today. Oh,well...there's always tomorrow! LoL
I found your RUclips channel recently when you were describing how professional cleaners protect my home from COVID 19. I've had a contract with a cleaning company for many years and as you spoke I realized they already doing these things. I'm retired and I work part-time. Part of the reason I still work is I love having my cleaners come every other week. I could do my own housework but they are so much faster than I am. The video topic above really hits home to me. My husband and I go around different zones in our house and pick up and put away what ever we can. I call it the big pick up. My mom always started our family cleaning day with a big pick up too.
Hi Cindy - You had a great Mom. I love the Big Pick Up idea. And you are correct many house cleaners have been taking "corona precautions" for years. We just called it something else. And thanks for supporting the cleaning industry - you're helping us leave the world a cleaner place. :-)
My issue is how to deal with stuff you use rarely. But find that once you discard it, you’ll need again. You wind up buying it again, and go back to cluttering again. It’s not that simple. I’ve tried doing without, borrowing, buying something I had previously owned and now paying a premium for it. It’s an ongoing struggle, and it frequently immobilizes me.
+Mimi I hate when that happens. Do you have things that you could use in its place? Or other ways to solve the problem? I once had 4 rolling pins. I used them to make cookies when the nieces came to visit. And they all helped me roll, cut and decorate cookies. When they outgrew our Super Saturday’s the only thing I ever used rolling pins for was an occasional pie crust. So I got rid of all of the rolling pins and just buy frozen pie shells if I ever need to make a Thanksgiving pie. Now I no longer store any of them. Does that make sense?
Angela Brown thank you for the response. This definitely is a first world struggle. Times change, innovations emerge. I’ll never be a minimalist. On the other hand, you have to be mindful what you have in your allotted space. I make mistakes some times, oh well.
How do you remove emotion when you’re trying to declutter. I moved into my parents home and they are now gone but I’m having a difficult time letting go.
I understand it’s a very difficult task. Here is a link to a video on grief hoarding: ruclips.net/video/rJzQNrCQ_vQ/видео.html Sending hugs and prayers your way! 🤗 🙏
I’m sure your parents wouldn’t want you to have that burden. they are just materialistic items. Just keep items that bring good memories, sentimental, valuable or nostalgic items. There is often plenty of things that can be given to organisations. It’s like your way of doing a donation. All the best! Wayne in norway
The kee is to have only whath you need and even for projects you should keep material that are good for use and then put every thing in difrent categories and boxess that can go in a specific place and keep evry thing orgonized in that zone of the room acording to subject.
I'm a big fan of you both, this video is perfect! Dana's books are phenomenal! For those that don't enjoy her videos, don't pass over the books, she's a very gifted author!
