I live less than 1/2 a mile from LHR and am right in the middle of a NFZ however I applied for an unlock which was drawn on a map, specified the height I needed (maximum) the duration of the unlock and why it was needed. Within 2 minutes I received the authorisation which had set the geofencing based on my map selection. I don't think many people know about this which to be honest is probably a good thing as there are some who are not responsible. I was nice to be able to use the drone in my back garden and finally do an inspection of the guttering before winter. I did get a knock on the door from a concerned (nosey) neighbour but I was able to clearly demonstrate that I follow the correct rules and get the right permissions albeit from DJI only but they did leave happy and didn't call the Police
Yes I bought myself a Mavic Pro Platinum which led to a MacBook Pro which fortunately had Final Cut installed an air 2 and a mini and a GoPro and an osmo 3
Hi Mattheww from Wisconsin. Everything you say concerning how a hobby draws a person in and inspires a desire to expand is absolutely true. I have had my Mini 2 for just over two months and already have my eye on an Air 2S. Keep up the interesting videos. Cheers.
I live in the USA our laws are different we don't have have to register the mini 2 to fly unless its for business bigger drones you do just depends on the weight and of course flying for business you have to have a part 107 certificate
Not completely correct. It is based on intent and not money. You check a neighbors gutters or do something for a non-profit for free. It requires a Part 107. Registration not required for
You forgot the one cost that it is more or less not optional - buying a good quality SD card. I use Coverdrone ( there are other insurance companies available) instead of DJI care refresh but some sort of cover is definitely needed. There are a number of free video and photo editing packages available but the main problem newbies will encounter is the spec of the PC. My fairly high spec laptop struggles so I will pay to have goodies put onto my daughter's new desktop (it's cheaper than upgrading the laptop and I can get far more power for less cash) and use that for editing
Thanks for the video. Are you able to fly old drones or is the firmware no longer good. Was thinking about buying the mini too but will the firmware be all right after the many three comes out?
Hi Matt as I leave in UK do I need to register DJI mini 2 I bought two weeks ago pre owned managed to setup on DJI fly app please advise as I am going to use in Greece as personal use
You certainly are going to spend more on your drone hobby, even before you get into the air. When I bought a DJI Mini 2 the next thing I needed was a high end phone for the remote controller, potentially costing as much as or more than the drone. Thanks a lot, DJI.
In the USA people should know to also check TFR notifications. A perfectly clear area to fly could become restricted for a period of time. I know the same concept exists in other countries. Even if only flying for recreation one should study the requirements for the license. People will become better pilots. Yes, you are a pilot and there are airspace classes and airport restrictions one should be aware of before flying. Knowing these things appear restrictive but it makes things more enjoyable. Knowing one is flying in a responsible manner.
Thanks for the tips! I remember the time I bought my first drone and I had to put away some money every payday bc those drone accessories are too tempting! 😂
Oh I know my house is in a "NO FLY ZONE". Will I still buy DJI? Yes 100%. But to fly here at my house I use a cheap Chinese GPS drone. Still got approval for it and I was stoked! Yes I crashed mine a few times. Biggest rookie mistake I made.... not reading my manual 1 step at a time while simultaneously controlling the drone at the same time so i learned what my drone is capeable of and what my controls do!!! Love your content! Thank you for teaching this old dog new tricks!🤣
Well you should also add how DJI has constantly messed up the mini 2 with ongoing firmware upgrades. And after the last update the performance is worst than before!
I would add: Practice on a simulator. I got a Mini 2 recently as my first drone and took it out once the weather warmed up. Turns out that despite my years of video gaming, I suck at drone controls. Time to get a simulator and practice on my PC.
That is an option,,, but I heard you say you are a gamer,,, so like me,, you can adapt without that... Here's your key,,, the (( FLIGHT MODE )) controller setting... I use mode 3 because it simulates that of a game controller... Try that...
I bought a Mavic Air 2 one year ago, mon month later dji released the Air2s… it was a little bit frustrating, but i would say that my biggest regret so far, is to not have taken the version with the smart controller… no more on sale now. at that stage, i don’t think that buying the future mini3 or the air 2s with the rc pro is worth it knowing that video quality will not really be that significantly better , what do you think ?
Just got a Mini2 last week and just getting to grips with it. Loving your videos, really helpful mate! Quick question on ND filters if you have a minute, live in NI too so which set would I really only need? The 4 x NDs 4,8,16,32? Thanks
Thanks for all the tips buddy. I own a mini 2 and absolutely love it! I can relate to what you said about upgrading the computer. I'm finding it to be slow in rendering 4k videos via filmora. Any suggestions on PC hardware and software minimums. I'm not an Apple guy...just saying! :)
I live nearby an international airport and even if there is a restricted area I can fly, of course lower that 100m height and only in the backyard. I have registered my drone so it is asking me to fly over my own responsibility so you can fly in a restricted area. Sometimes is asking me to unlock the restricted area and after few tries is working .
This is a great link to check where you can fly - www.dji.com/uk/flysafe/geo-map . Put in Belfast and it will show you all the no-fly zones, mainly around the city airport. Hope that helps!
JUST A TIP :) Care refresh is not worth it especially not for the mini 2. Get the coverdrone insurance which is for a year 10 euros more then the dji care. You get a new one on a send out bases or they will fix yours completely for 50 euro. With dji care you get a refurbished one and you have to pay 100 euro if its flies away for example. Coverdrone is a complete insurance with liability cover, privacy claim cover and on an all risk base ( maybe the all risk is the same with dji care) but dji care is NOT an insurance for your drone remember that. Coverdrone is just 10 euros more and it covers for damage you do to people, their property, yourself, privacy claims, flyaways and all risk crashes. Trust me coverdrone is 100000x more worth it then dji care which is just a care for your drone and NOT an insurance. Also it is completely stupid you have to activate it within 48 hours of activating the drone for an easy process :) Love your videos thankyou for everything you've helped me with
I still struggle to understand if I can fly where I am in Bangor as both BFS and BHD are on my flight path but seems the Mini 2 is allowed up to a certain height.
Hi Matthew, thanks for all the work you do, I have had my dji mini 2 combo package for a year now, would it still be worth buying the dji care package now, only crashed once so far, clipped the branch of a tree, only propeller damage, easy to change, once again, thanks for all you do for the drone users. Best regards Bob
No look at my comment. Get it insured by coverdrone for the mini 2 its on a yearly bases 10 euros more then the dji care and it is a REAL insurance which dji care is not its just a service for your drone. Also you pay around a 100 if it flies away or you break it and you never get a new one just a refurbished one. coverdrone gives you a NEW one or completely fixes your drone. Also they cover for liability i.e damage you do to someone, their property, yourself. And one of the most important they have privacy claim cover!
I noticed that you have not commented on the latest DJI Mini 2 firmware update that seems to cause problems with GPS & connection drop outs for many people. Have you updated your Mini 2’s firmware & are you having problems? Do you recommend holding off on this update for now?

Luckily I'm right on the edge of the airport zone, and it's mostly just some altitude restrictions, which won't matter for just learning to fly.

I would like to say that if you are flying a drone inside even in a no fly zone, it *might* work cause the gps may not realize where you are. If you are flying without gps lock. Not that its a great solution but, maybe.
Definitely wish I knew how drastically important the editing is to satisfying footage. I can fly ok and get nice clips but the grading isn't there as I can't afford an expensive laptop to do anything with the footage. Easy to forget the editing that goes into the pretty Instagram posts.
