The Granite Park Chalet was built in Glacier National Park in 1914 and 1915 by the Great Northern Railway to provide back country accommodations inside Glacier National Park. Granite Park Chalet was the last of the Chalet's built in Glacier National Park by the Great Northern Railway. Granite Park Chalet is one of only two remaining to this day and still provides a restful place for weary adventurers inside Glacier National Park.
When hiking in Glacier National Park you should always carry water, a lot of water. When we started our hike it was a cool 50-55 degrees outside and when we finished it was 85 degrees. During the hike to the Granite Park Chalet you will have amazing views of Heavens Peak which is a massive 8,987 feet high and is the most prevalent feature in this area of the park.
As you continue your journey to the Granite Park Chalet you will come to a healthy pine forest with beautiful trees. Be sure to have trees the mosquitoes were thick in this area.
After braving the mosquitoes you will begin to come to a more open area offering wonderful views of the Garden Wall and Swiftcurrent Mountain inside Glacier National Park.
Once you arrive at Granite Park Chalet you will be greeted by a beautiful stone structure which offers amazing views of Glacier National Park. We sat on a bench facing Heavens Peak for an hour as we enjoyed our lunch as we gazed in awe. After lunch and a nice rest we headed back down the hill taking the memories that will last a lifetime with us.
On our way down the trail we came across a supply team of mules being lead by a wrangler heading up the trail. It is amazing, even today the Granite Park Chalet is supplied by a team of mules much like it would have been over 100 years ago when it was built.
Glacier National Park and the Granite Park Chalet certainly was worth the hike. One of these days I will return to spend the night under the stars.

You really should try to get a reservation to spend the night. Hike in on the highline trail. It's a little over 7 miles but no huge elevation gain.

Montana and Glacier have been our favorites so far. So at some point we will be returning and may still be up for the hike. It was a truly amazing location.

@@RoamingwiththeRamsays I do remember hearing that side was closed. Iceberg lake trail is often closed due to bear activity.

Wanting to do this with my boys, what are some must haves for gear? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Really depends on physical condition. It is a hike with lots of elevation gain, if you hike with poles that should help. Plenty of water and Bug Spray is a must. One section we ran into swarms of mosquitos. Sun protection from hats or sunscreen. Favorite trail snack of course. Go really early as the parking area is limited. Might suggest a light weight jacket for the start of the hike.

We hiked in on the Highline trail, spent the night, hiked out on the loop trail. Absolutely beautiful. The highline is 7.5 miles I think but not a lot of elevation gain.

Alice and i had a great hike up the Loop Trail. The Granite Park Chalet was amazingly beautiful. Luckily Alice wasn't hurt when she rolled her ankle. When you see it you will know how lucky she was.

I always wear hiking boots. Not a guarantee you can't roll your ankle, but it's way better than walking shoes. You might want to buy a pair for your next hike.

Did this hike yesterday plus I hiked up to Grinnell Glacier. Legs are paying for it today. Definitely a challenge but the views are worth it. The hike down was brutal on the knees.

Eric, I had hoped to get in the hike to the Grinnel Overlook but never got the opportunity. Time just slipped away from me. My knees would have had a problem with it also. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
