@@Redsr5 There aren't that many bolt on track systems. And Shaun even stated that there was a break in period. His first trip had issues with track stretch and rotation. The second time out was far better.
You're totally right. I mean real snow wheelers, such as the Kelowna guys have purpose built rigs and they aren't on tracks. Huge tires, huge horsepower.
I had to winch a vanlifer out of strife a couple weekends ago in -15F. Totally blocking the road to camp. Dunno why he thought his 2wd Promaster was capable of hitting up the 18in of snow in front of him but he definitely learned the limits of his vehicle and my patience that night.
south of moab we were coming out of Elephant Hill. ive lead that trail many times and it can be a trap for the less capable rigs. there was this fellow who flew to the USA and came to the trail in a ford escape. it happened to be a nostalgic trail for him and his late wife. the escape could not escape.... anyways, he was in the final switchbacks going over the hill and he couldn't go forward or back without hurting himself, his rental or us. we could not get around him to winch and it was late in the day for anyone to come from the trailhead. his transmission was overheated and it wasn't working real good. i guess he had been trying for a while. so... we let it cool, lost some air in his tires and ran a strap up the hill. my group was bigger than usual, which was a good thing because we were able to pull with enough people to give him effective traction. that didn't stop him from almost running us all over! it was a sweet story of why he was there but he was there alone...
When I was a kiddle growing up in Haney in the 70s my dad had a lowbed business so he had a key to every forestry gate in the lower mainland. I love how you arrived at your destination and I could tell you were bummed about the fact that your “spot” was taken, but you didn’t get deterred by that little setback and, with a good attitude, allowed those young folks to continue enjoying themselves. Good on you guys to be able to set out with a goal in mind, but be able to adjust and overcome. It seems like the Explorer was more in need of your presence anyways. best overland channel imo. straight to the point. good editing, inspirational. lol I love finding weird stuff in the woods like that truck topper. Just like.. how did you get here. I found a tire when I was hunting way out in middle of nowhere, way far away from any road or old vehicle. so weird haha.
