Welcome to New York City. Actually we are one hour away from New York City and it's called Philadelphia. But I call it "just outside of NYC". Nürnberg is an international known city not just outside of München (160 km away). Just had to point that out even if nobody cares. 😁

It's a beautiful facility but I suspect the expense of building/maintaining will make scaling up to any meaningful level problematic. I think the POD video you shared is a much more likely scenario at large scale. I will say, however, the use of used batteries is a very smart use case.

Its fair to say that charging stations will give rise to some larger retail concepts based around a continual flow of EV visits of 30 minutes or less. The possibilities are endless, interesting and something to look forward to. This Audi execution was obviously done with little or no consideration for cost or profitability and looks destined to become a dentist office at some point in the future. Personally, I'm looking forward to the day when Dunkin Donuts becomes the go-to stop in my EV travels.

We in the US are used to fueling stations that have a convenience store attached. If you combine the lounge aspect of the Audi facility with a minimally sized convenience store you have the amenities that most people would be looking for not only for extended road trips but also for localized charging as well. As our cities continue to grow, people are not only going to need these fast chargers, but as you and others have pointed out, we need to be investing in level 2 destination chargers at grocery stores, shopping centers, business parks. Places where you will be parked for an hour or more.

In general a great concept. But the ability to reserve a charger and ways to head in to town with your car plugged in to a 350kW charger seems like a great way to block a charger both before and after you have your session. Or can you tell the charger I just want to use one module and have a longer stop while the other side can use all the remaining charging modules? I didn't see any Level 2 options or slower DC options.

What a neat concept! Love the way it looks, and the setup is very cool. Think Tesla needs to install the “reserve” type apparatus on all their SC station. Have it up at all times to avoid being ICE’d all the time. And can only go down as it detects a Tesla in the parking lot to gain access to charging! To be quite honest, I don’t think something this nice and high tech would last in States, mate. Someone is bound to Fig it up. I guess the point of the second floor is a better view? Otherwise it would make more sense to make it 1-story with more overhangs and 3x the solar. I also wonder what the capital tradeoff is for batteries vs grid connection. Regardless, the longer it's in service, the more the ~20% AC-DC-batt-AC loss costs.

    • @mrhickman53
      @mrhickman53 2 года назад

Just a thought: Tesla and others have demonstrated automatic connection and disconnection to chargers. Even if it is a ways off for FSD on all roads, why not use FSD to move a charged EV off the charger to a parking space rather than merely charging idle fees? If chargers get more congested this could be a "free" feature, permitting higher throughput, increasing supercharger revenue. If cars are queueing, use FSD to move cars waiting to charge into the next available charger in order to free the occupants from waiting in the car for the next charger.
Basically use FSD features to provide "valet" charging. Don't bother with figuring which charger is available FSD will take the car to it.
Such capabilities would enhance the value of supercharger locations to nearby establishments.

EVs need at least 2-3 more charging stops compared with the ICE cars and the charging process is at least 2-5 times slower. My thoughts are that we will need 4 to 15 times more charging spots compared to the gas stations columns.

Audi is experimenting with a concept more recently championed by NIO, called a "NIO House". If you haven't heard of NIO, I would look into it. They are launching four NIO Houses in Germany this year, and will be selling their products (which includes battery swapping and BaaS) in 13 European countries by the end of 2023. NIO is a direct competitor of Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi.

One beauty’s of NIO swap station is that it’s very small (three car spaces) so a super prime location (middle of any big city) is relatively cheap VS a large bulky (beautiful I might add) station like this. Yet the swap station can swap up to 312 cars per day! so think of the convenient places the swap stations can be. Supermarkets. Malls. Parks. Etc. These supercharger stations are too big to be convenient

Great looking concept, but seems like a lot of wasted space on the ground...
The battery to street feed ratio is interesting.
A 30kW solar feed might at best give you 200kWh (so 10% of capacity). Really needs more.
Would be interesting to see if the station is smashed by multiple cars on busy days. The ratio only really works for minimal usage. If you consider petrol station utilisation I suspect it's going to have some issues
But great to see batteries being recycled for another use.

Bit over the top, Tesla pods seems more reasonable and economical. Oh.....Audi was never about economical.....I forgot.

Is this because they don't have the software Tesla has? Like Theater, games to entertain you while waiting for a charge? I don't know much about other ev's other than Tesla.

Having just finished 5000 km Europe road trip in Fiat 500 EV with limited range, I can agree that this is an amazing and very welcome development

Can you imagine THAT in LA...occupied by 170 homeless people peeing in a corner and tagging that building with graffiti and drug needles everywhere! Need its own police force 24/7/365!

This video shows just horrifically behind the US is in charging infrastructure. Visit any EA installation and you’ll usually find half of the units non-functional or dead, and visit some other brand installation and find that none of the units can supply any power to your Ioniq5 because of its fast-charging capability. Situations like these exist all over the country. Also, right in your own back yard of the country, eastern Colorado, western Kansas, the Texas panhandle, and eastern New Mexico, where you find that EV charging simply is not available anywhere unless you happen to be along I-25 or I-70. 300 miles between DC fast chargers just will not cut it, and that’s the situation you have in the middle of the country unless you only drive interstates.

No, I hope my future EV range will be so long that fast charging won’t be needed (but possible), just over night charging.

I wish the United States would get their shit together and start putting these kinds of EV charging stations "everywhere" in the US. Yet they have no problem spending BILLIONS of dollars on WAR and other wasteful things.

Nice, but no mass solution all over the country. I think this is a solution for the over 100000 Euro luxury cars which can pay für these facilites.

bit of a ridiculous footprint for such a small number of chargers though

Very nice however, how many charging stations would be available for the same space on the Tesla model? With Tesla offering their system to Porche and Audi owners, how would a Tesla owner be able to charge at an Audi charge station? What is good for the goose should be good for the gander

All cars in Europe , including Tesla , use CCS . Why wouldn't Tesla be able to charge here?

It is a premium urban charging hub concept for everyone. The charger number is calculated for available storage capacity and low power grid connection.
