VFC HK416A5 V3 GBBR: Did they fix it?

  • Enough time has passed since I owned the Version 2 HK416A5 GBBR, I decided it was time to adopt the latest Version 3 to see if VFC has learned from their mistakes of the past. My old videos on the V2 showed a capable GBBR with only a handful of small flaws, and while they weren’t necessarily a big deal, they were enough for the HK416A5 to lose against its competitors at the time.

    Increasing the bolt travel by using a RS buffer tube made mine more consistent. It does overtravel but i did shim the inside just enough for the bolt to travel farther compared to the stock, making bolt lock a guarantee. I also use a 3oz H buffer which improves cyclic rate a bit due to it being lighter. I use VMAGs exclusively, only had problems with the V2 VMAGs, but no problems with V3 ones even before i changed out the buffer tube

    • @BadaBingPictures
      @BadaBingPictures  4 месяца назад +7

      Cool feedback, thanks.
      I tried with my V3 VMAG but it was still inconsistent. If I split the upper and lower I couldn’t send it back to the shop, so I tested it with the two mags I had as best as I could and the bolt lock didn’t work.
      I’m not messing around with it in an attempt to make it lock up properly. It should be 100% from the box. After my old V2 I had, this V3 owed me big time. What a kick in the balls.

    • @Jerv165
      @Jerv165 4 месяца назад +1

      @@BadaBingPictures I agree, you shouldn't have to do all of that for a working bolt lock. One reason i see that may be the cause of the issue is the weight of the bolt, the buffer spring, and buffer. On higher-end VFC ARs, the issue is less noticeable because the bolt is steel, which moves slower because of the rather weak buffer spring. In this case, the bolt catch has enough time to fully engage. However on "lower" end models like the 416, M733, XM177 etc., the carrier is zinc aluminum, which is lighter and therefore faster. The rather weak spring suddenly isn't weak anymore because of the difference in weight, enough to effectively lessening the window of time the lock has to fully engage. This is the reason why I think GHK got the design right by moving the catch surface rearward instead of keeping it flush. It gives more time for the lock to engage, much like what i said on my original comment (using an RS tube to lengthen bolt travel).
      In case of the magazines, on the V3 there is a little nub/ notch at the rear of the lock tab directly at the left hand side of the output valve. Pulling the lock tab upwards will cause the nub to lock on top of the rear part of the feedlips. This, added with the constant pressure from the follower spring, will give better bolt lock consistency. I won't lie, this does need time to break in so that every time that last BB leaves the feedlips, the nub will rise and lock onto the rear to help the follower spring to engage the lock more effectively.
      Yeah i think you're out of luck on this one if you don't plan on taking it apart for warranty reasons. The way i see it, this is the only way to really fix the issue. Heavier steel bolt (not mandatory) + RS buffer (because the VFC one sucks) and buffer tube = more time for the bolt catch to fully extend and engage. Its sad to see you not enjoying the product out of the box, since your original review was the reason i came to know of the 416a5 and eventually preordered the V3 back in december of 2022.

    Freind of mine has an old 416 (i think gen2) and he never cleans it. Only problems he ever had were a broken hammer and charginghandle connector.
    Is that GBB broken in? I only ever got one VFC, so i can't speak for everything else. I got the G3A3 and it was making problems in the beginning. But just by using it, thus breaking it in, those problems went away. One problem was a dragging bolt. The hammer reset plate is made of steel and was carving its way through the bolt, until it hit a screw that is meant to slide against it. Then, after a short cleaning i never had a problem again.
    Also. Why is the whole GBB slothered in grease? Did it come like this from the factory? This is exessive. Way to much, and can also empeed bolt function. In colder weather or after a lot of consecutive shots, the grease will thicken and slow down the bolt or even lock up valves, in extrem cases.
    Not to mention that grease also attracts dirt.

      I’m using propane. Exactly what every other GBBR of mine uses and those work fine. Even in the cold. The gas isn’t the issue.
      I demonstrated reason for the slow response and that was the catch trying to flick up to lock but ended up dragging on the carrier. When I pushed it in and fired, the cycle was fine.
      I sent the rifle back to the shop. I decided I wasn’t going to accept this flaw after waiting six years following my old V2. No messing around. No modding. If it didn’t work on its host magazine and V3 VMAG, it’s not my job to fix it.

    After some reading it sounds like this gbbr should work flawlessly with the v3 mags, or by slightly bending the bolt lock downwards. If that's the case and the thing works fine like that, wouldn't it be a good gbbr to start with? It's like 400 dollars, 100 more for shipping and 100 more in vat tax, 600 or 700 with spare v3 mags. That's really good for a stock gbbr, comparing to viper tech I think I'd get like 400 to 600 dollars to spare for mods that would go into the price of the vt.

    • @BadaBingPictures
      @BadaBingPictures  3 месяца назад

      This specific GBBR should work flawlessly…although aside from that one (I would say crucial part), it ran exceptionally well.
      It’s efficient. Good fast action to Heavy Recoil ratio. Everything that you’d want in a GBBR.
      They just slip up every now and then.
      Would highly recommend investing in this rather than a Viper Tech for your 1st GBBR.
      With the money you’ll save you could put that into spare magazines and any fancy accessories you’d like.

    Hey Bing, this video gave me some questions:
    1- The bolt catch in the 416a5 is considerably bigger, and has a pad for ambient bolt drop. Do you think that maybe this extra material and weight compared to standard AR bolt catchs, could be the reason the lock back is not 100% trustworthy?
    2- How do you see VFC after this? Still hyped about their new non AR releases (AK74mn and maybe the FNC)?
    Obs: sorry for my bad English 😅

    • @BadaBingPictures
      @BadaBingPictures  4 месяца назад

      Hi,
      Your English is great. 👍
      That might be the case. Possible they are not using the correct parts to deal with that slightly added weight. For example they might be using the bolt catch spring for their regular M4’s or M733 etc…
      This isn’t the first time I’ve bought a VFC GBB and it not function properly right from the box.
      They have gotten better over the last 3 years or so, sadly it’s the little mistakes that keep being made.
      I don’t get hyped over their stuff. If I decide to buy something new from them, I mentally prepare for disappointment. Even their older stuff like the 416A5.

    Hi Badabing, I realize that your VFC 416 has a relatively stiff recoil spring and you seem to be using weak green gas in quite cold UK weather (in Asia we usually use 12kg green gas at low temperatures). 25-30 degrees Celsius) leads to the bolt carrier sometimes not going all the way, leading to bolt lock failure, Could you try a stronger gas or use GHK's softer recoil spring and share back with me the results?

      The gun proved it wasn’t fixed from my previous version 2. So it was not worth my time to fix it again and do all the usual reviewing.

    Yep unfortunately I had a similar experience with my V3 MK18. The receiver finish was crap, the handguard wasn't any better than an aliexpress clone, the stock was absurdly wobbly and the performance issues were the same as yours too. I sent mine back immediately and got a full refund for it.
    I have the VFC MP5, M110, Scar H, 1911, 3 of their glocks and I've had their MP7 and G3 in the past. I haven't had these issues with any of those, it's just that their AR15 patterns are just a bit shit unfortunately.

    VFC was good, when they made all their parts in Hong Kong. After they switched to Taiwan, their products went downhill. btw "WE-tech" makes VFC GBB parts.

    Like cheap china made, sometimes work, mostly not. Hop up is easily adjust but awful. Just easy to adjust, looks cool as gastube function. But adjustment so little. Overhype reddit product.

    You’re comparing a 500€ gun to one close to 1k and expect it to do any better?
    I’ve had a gen2 416 and have had no issues with bolt lock when it comes to using gen3 pmags, maybe give that a shot

    • @BadaBingPictures

      I know right? £550+ compared to a 1.4k doesn’t make much sense.
      Although my GHK M4 bolt locks perfectly, so nothing to prove there. And my TM M4 MWS? ….well I’d still be shooting to bolt lock even now!
      My VT 416 was the only other comparable AR GBBR I own. So in fact it made the most sense.
      And it did so on magazines that aren’t strictly speaking design for it.

      Already gone.
      The last 416 I had was exactly the same. So this new V3 had to work properly, as it didn’t I sent it back for a refund. Im not wasting my time covering for VFC if they can’t get it right 6 years later.
