- Wes examines the debut of trans hero Dreamer in Superman: Son of Kal-El #13. Jon Kent Superman is leading DC Comics movement to introduce more LGBT representation in comics. Unfortunately, Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 suffers from the same issues as previous issues but adds the comic trope of validating new marginalized characters for multiple pages. It makes transgender hero Dreamer come off as more annoying than heroic. It also does't help that core plot elements are playing out in other titles in DC Comics continuity. Being "an ok writer" is a spectrum.
While Dreamer was decently written, I feel like anyone that positively review this issue will only feed the ego of DC and Tom. Jay brings down every issue he is in. Jon should not be Bi everything needs to go
I don't think the problem is having Jon be Bi, it's just that it isn't written well. I don't think anyone would have a problem with it if all this was a good story
@@rileymachelle4088 true you have a point. The problem with Jon being bi is everyone knows the REAL reason it was done and what the underlining goal was. For instance if you wanted to build jon as bi they wouldve done it during his during his time with the Legion some 1-2 years prior. That and also it was part of a whole 'nother narrative like the Tim Drake issue. While Jon being bi could work, the execution was done in a way that very off and disrespectful to the fans and past writers of the character
I get the feeling Nicole Maines being co-writer is why the trans aspect of the character isn't what the whole story is about and is actually a good hero and the editorial staff still mandated the weird validation stuff anyway
hopefully DC keeps her around to cowrite the character for a bit so we can have a trans character who isn't a massive embarrassment for all parties. She also deserves better than being stuck in this TT trainwreck.
I actually liked her character from the Cw Supergirl series, although her costume could be better. Glad to see her character in the DC Comicsverse finally. Would love to see Dreamer get her own mini series written by Maines.

So I never watched the CW Supergirl when Dreamer was introduced (I stopped watching at season 2) so I can't tell you she's a bad character, but I do know when she got an episode dedicated to her it was about fighting a villain who was a transphobe, which wasn't really a shocker because everything about this character was centered around her new gender and she couldn't become anything else cause that's how unimaginative these woke writers are

I was a lifelong DC fanboy. I mean the real deal, Marvel hating, totally biased in favor of the DC heroes, etc etc. and Superman was my favorite comic character my entire life. Today I can say I absolutely hate DC Comics and I despise Superman. Of course this only applies to the modern woke era. But, still, I never ever thought I could possibly hate DC or Superman.

I haven’t read anything since Doomsday Clock due to employment problems and it being a low priority, but I think that’s where I’m gonna let it die for me. I’ll just re-read old stuff because even though comics have always tackled modern and controversial topics, it never felt so polarizing and divisive. It seems like comics used to push that despite being different, we are all equal when it comes to human rights and decency. Now it’s like comics are saying “if you’re not different, you’re wrong. You’re a bad person if you don’t blindly follow and support X instead of Y. There is no middle ground. Change or die.” It’s so weird.
I like how at the beginning you said that one of the character’s positives is that she has a personality beyond being trans
The fact that this is A positive nowadays says a lot about comics
So yeah once again people in the comic pointing out how sketchy and bias Jay is, and having valid criticism are portrayed as the bad guys cause heaven forbid we have a gay person who isn't the embodiment of perfection

Personally I think son of kal el is so bad and frankly I have reached my breaking point with this terrible series, also I don’t like that this imposter is still dating jay nakumura because he’s such a terrible character and frankly I can’t take it anymore.

I think DC have to take John to the next level. I belive that DC can make a big jump if they made John transexual and not more Superman, just Supergirl. Think about, John doesnt feel confort with a biologic man corpse so he decide to be a woman, but not a normal woman, a Supergil. I dont know.. maybe its a hit

I hate when DC do this; They take characters outside of the comics and try to incorporate them into the main universe-Besides from A few exceptions this has never work. Does anyone remember when they incorporate Chloe Sullivan and John Diggle into the comics ?
People who liked CW’s Arrow tv show, usually love Diggle as a character, same with fans of CW’s Supergirl with Dreamer(she ended up being one of my favorite characters). It’s not surprising then, that popular characters from outside the comics, eventually make their way into the comics. Sometimes like Harley Quinn, it’s even a huge success.

@@savagedarksider5934 I mean, it's not impossible. We've had characters like Lockup and Livewire make pretty good jumps as villains when they become popular. Dreamer's powerset isn't impossible to reconcile with the DCU (though heaven forbid she run into Morpheus during her travels). The real task is making them fit properly, and I'm glad they had another writer on deck to maybe sure Tom Taylor didn't muck it up.
What ticks me off is when they release a movie and try to retroactively make the comic characters more like their adaptations. Like Thor and Iron Man looking and sounding more like their actors, or Spider-Man getting organic webshooters during the early 2000s... or exiling comic Nick Fury to the moon for killing the Watcher so they can introduce Nick Fury Jr. who looks suspiciously like Samuel L. Jackson.

It's probably the number 1 comic selling right now that Tom Taylor is writing. Funny how they can't get a comic in the top 10 selling list unless there's some gimmick attached. Superboy "coming out" or another character i.e. Dreamer the 1st "trans" hero and, of course, the MOST inspirational of ALL TIME replacing Superman as that iconic figure.
The comic was #1 on Amazon. SoK is not a seller.
Not really a gimmick if its meant to offer more representation for LGBT. I liked son of Kal el for the representation and story.

Also, Dreamer on Supergirl was an on-the-nose name as the character was an illegal (space) alien brought to the country as a child.

I don't read comics these days (letting them go with the end of Invincible and Fables and a few others), but the progeny problem is easily solved: Dreamer is a clone, or is from a family of clones, or someone dreamed she'd need a clone and so had one made and tucked away in cold storage until the story demanded defrosting. What cha bet that some variation of this occurs?
Being trans in marvel and dc is meaningless because they can just find a super powered person who can make them biologically man or woman. So there would be no trans characters

Its mainly from what i said in my comment. Because people are giving some of the issues SOME credit. DC and Tom take it as the WHOLE series is good when it's just 1 or 2 issues. Those positive reviews that sites like CBR and some ppl on youtube are the ones that they will listen. Plus the LGBT community would have a fit it got after all that press.
@@CapoWhoLaughs I noticed that the successful Nightwing run crossover did not boost sales. I assume that the Action Comics, which is better received is the next attempt. DC acknowledged the horrible sales in Aquamen and cut it quickly. I thought perhaps DC was allowing it to be a platform for the current social issue trend. Still if it goes beyond the crossover with Superman I will be shocked.

I grabbed this cause I thought Nicole Maines sounded like she might know what she’s doing. I feel like she added parts that were good, but besides that, that damsel conversation was so stupid, especially since it was essentially already the plan and was what Jay wanted lol
I don't know who they even make these for. I'm a Trans and Gay person and even I don't like this! I'm a HUGE superhero nerd. I expect these new characters to fit in with everyone else, not just get forced in for the sake of having them. I find it really annoying when our community just eats up whatever representation we can get. I think we should demand more from our characters. It kinda defeats the purpose when you make LGBT characters/stories this way. This isn't going to change anyone's mind. Like how about we get an engaging and well written story first and foremost? I honestly don't think anybody would mind Jon being Bi or Dreamer being Trans if they were exceptionally well written. I kinda even feel this to be a little insulting. Like why are these characters worse than all the others? I want these heroes to be as deep and as lovable as everyone else, don't just half-ass them. Put some damn thought into it, do your job!
Give me Sarah Connor, Ellen Ripley, Ellie from TLOU1, Spider-Gwen, Mayday Parker, S-M 2099, and Miles Morales any day of the week. Those are characters that everyone loves, AND fill the gaps in representation

As a trans person i see some potential in Dreamer... She seems far better character than those dreadful Marvel pride trans mutants or whatever! She has the powerset of Dani Moonstar Mirage which is better than the Marvel Pride's Faceshoper, which is stupid as hell!😒 All she needs is a good writer, who writes her as a relatable character which isn't woke and insufferable but, i suppose there's no good writers @ DC...😕

I haven’t bought any DC since Doomsday Clock and I don’t think I want to anymore. It’s just pandering now. Pandering and moral pontification is all these comics consist of anymore. Everyone is gay. Everyone loves everyone. Won’t be long before Joker and Batman are banging in the Batmobile because “At it’s heart, their story has always been one of love.” or some dumb shit.
And they still haven't fixed the plot holes regarding the origin of dreamer that have been there since the character was introduced in the supergirl television show!!!

This and the X-Men review, how the hell did it come to this? More importantly, how can it be corrected?
While I had no idea what her role/function in CW's Supergirl was (and the way her outfit fitted looked weird), but I did liked the character and actress who played her (though I dropped at the end of S4). So if they were going to develop her with the serie version as basline, she could be pretty cool; but seeing your comic book review it seems they sabotaged her while she holds potential. Which is a shame.

Oh no the death of Batman. He just saw a whole city gassed but the death of Batman was what really scared him. Bendix even unmasked him to prove to Johnathan it's really the man he knows and loves Bruce Wayne and made sure to make Johnathan watch instead of killing him way earlier. He knew this would crush him so it was personal. Bendix could have chosen to kill his boyfriend or his mom but that would be damsels in distress. They already said they were done with that. It could have been his father depowered and shot? No Batman is way more important to the Superman books, DC comics and to Johnathan so of coarse it has to be Batman.
Dreamer isn’t a bad character. She needs to be better written.

I just think this is all hilarious, it’s great not being a part of comics anymore so now I can just watch it implode with ridiculous comics like this. But it is hard to believe, because the editors have all been in comics for years, it’s hard to believe that they’ve allowed them to devolve so much, it’s astounding really. I don't get the hate for this book. I love it. And don't say this isn't for superman fans. Enjoying gay coming of age stories doesn't mean you can't also be a superman fan. Also the only thing that's even breaking top charts for DC is batman shit because comic publishers have been messing up DC and marvel for years now and it has nothing to do with adding representation.
