As someone who grew up in the Lowcountry and currently in the Midlands part of South Carolina, this is an excellent video of our state. Excellent job Mark. From the Mountains to the Sea.
I lived out there for about 2 months and one thing I do remember is a lot of times after rains, giant cockroaches would be all over the place and they'll just fly and sometimes I'll land on you. It was so gross.
The Philippines has the biggest cockroaches on the planet. They fly and they usually land on your head. I used to shoot them with my Daisy BB gun while I was still living there during my younger years.
You speak the truth, Mark. As a native South Carolinian and a frequent world traveler, I feel there's nowhere else equally historical, naturally beautiful, and affordable than SC. It checks all the boxes. Sure, it can get hotter than Hades, but the winters are mild, so it's a fair trade.
I love Myrtle Beach! I recall the last time I was there many years ago, there was Harley Davidson biker fest going on and the beach area was packed!! I’d love to return but in their off season.
Great video! We really liked the Angel Oak tree in/near Charleston. Not a lot to do there but amazing to see. The mustard bbq with Brunswick stew…Or hash over rice. Had it many years ago while fishing for monster catfish at Santee Cooper(Santee SC, Cross SC, Eutawville etc) and still think about it…. Also, highly, HIGHLY recommend The Pretty Place in Cleveland South Carolina! Look it up. Worth a stop for sure. Agree on the heat. Been to the spoleto music festival in Charleston a couple times and even in EARLY June, that heat is oppressive! I live in GA so I’m used to heat and humidity BUT Charleston has a special kind of heat and humidity 😂🫠 I love the Carolinas ❤
Things that should shocked me: The Palmetto bug walked right thru the sticky bug trap. Coworker taking about grilling a racoon. A drug store that was also a voodoo shop.
Oh my god, i remember being a little kid and going from Virginia down to south georgia to visit family and getting so excited when i saw South of the border because it was kind of the half way point. Never would have thought id see it on a travel youtube video lol
We leave lived in SC for 5 years now and we do not like it at all. There's a lot of racism, especially in the work place and my husband is a medical professional. They will get you the 1st year on property taxes because UNTIL you actually live HERE for 1 year, you are not considered a legal resident. Also be prepared to pay out the nose to get tags and just for a title change to get tags, you have to get another title for your vehicle. Well that's around $300! Yes I did say $300. If you have ANY MEDICAL ISSUES, SC healthcare is terrible. And I do mean terrible! They are 20 years behind in knowledge altogether. Expect to pay VERY high auto insurance also. It's because of ALL the drunk drivers! In 1 year (last year 2022) there were over 1300 deaths related to alcohol! That's an insane amount. I believe I know WHY ppl drink so much however. It's because of the healthcare system! And if you like anything done quickly, forget it! Ive been waiting for a surgery for close to a year! It's True...I have broken spinal hardware, 2 broken spinal rods and a fusion, and STILL can't get a surgery! Oh that's another thing about SC you WILL find quite annoying, frustrating, probably illegal also, but everything is based on who you know, your kin, your kins kin. You won't get anything unless you have kin, then u r good to go! Oh and folks about the Southern hospitality.... we've not found very much of that HERE at all. Oh and unfortunately the war that happened eon's ago, well it STILL silently rages on, but it's kept hush hush. If you are from the North you WILL be treated differently. The BUGS, ok that's a very scary thing because IDC where you are, in the ritziest place, richest neighborhood, you WILL HAVE COCKROACHES. No they may call them Palmetto bugs, but they are good old fashioned cockroaches. Oh and they are planning on imposing a new YANKEE TAX, yes you heard me right, a Yankee tax! If it weren't for the tourists which SC DEPENDS ON, they wouldn't have anything, it's a very poor state with not a lot of resources - sad to say. And IF you STILL plan on moving HERE, please make sure that you are not in a flood zone! I could go on actually but I need to call everyone that I called yesterday and the day before, they don't get things done in a timely manner, lose documents, don't call back, forget you even exist really, so you HAVE to check up on everything you submit, all calls, everything period. I would go on but like I said I have to redo what I've done yesterday! Ahh the good ol South with the good ol boy system. BTW, WE CAN'T WAIT TO MOVE!
Charleston is a fantastic place... for people with money. I've never had such an expensive vacation. 4 days there didn't even compare to 7 days at a Myrtle beach hotel with a water park inside it. They have absolutely no fast food restaurants. No cheap places. The tours are great but outrageous. Charleston truly is one of a kind, and you'll love it. Ghost tours, Fort Sumter, USS Yorktown, Magnolia Cemetery, they're all fantastic. Go after the middle of August.
Another great video! These are great recommendations. I’m from the islands and I was shocked to hear you mention frogmore stew. I didn’t know tourists were aware of it!
when i was 10 i believe my uncle moved his family from philadelphia to spartanburg s.c., those 5 years he lived there we went to visit them every spring break and during the trip we'd spend a couple days in charleston and a couple days in sullivans island. i loved going there so much so that eventually as a grown adult the very first trip i paid for with my own money was to charleston s.c. with a girlfriend, i've returned a few times even since then including with my eventual wife! i'd say go in the spring or fall, especially spring late april in charleston is great.
South Carolina is much more than the coastal areas.for example, Greenville is a lovely small city in the Blue ridge Mountain foothills. summers are not as hot and humid as the coast, winter are fairly mild. Spring and Fall are wonderful
My friends & I were in Myrtle Beach last week & we killed 3 cockroraches in our condo. The exterminator claimed they weren't roaches but we knew better.😮
What about the cicadas. That noise alllllllllllllll summer long. But you gotta love those palmetto bugs. They always get in your house and on you. I’m a Charlestonion all my life.
Born and raised. Georgetown is cute. I was staying on a plantation outside of Georgetown and if mosquitoes were dollar bills I'd be a Billionaire! I miss Charleston every day of my life! Beaufort is adorable and a sort of a Charleston light or Charleston Junior.
We just visited Hunting Island State park a few weeks ago. It was hot and humid, but it also was beautiful. All of the shade trees around the businesses surprised me.
Yes, there is humidity and insects here in South Carolina, but after spending several years in the swamps and rice fields of the Texas gulf coast, South Carolina is virtually bug free and not very humid at all. That said, I do miss beef barbecue , in particular brisket.
Geographically speaking south carolina is more humid than Texas especially in our swamps and rice fields. The further west you go in the US the less humid it is. Texas is in the west.
Should I be concerned that you need to recommend 'pants' when traveling? I haven't gone pantsless since college days! And, as for flying roaches, ain't nothing compared to the flying subway rats where I grew up in NYC (thankfully, we're in rural PA for the past 35 years).😂
Excellent video like always, but that's a NOPE on the BBQ for me. I'm a Texan. I like our BBQ. I don't know what that stuff is in SC, but it's not BBQ. I'd love the shrimp and grits. The Summer heat of SC won't mean anything to me. I love heat. 😁
@@dan-patrickobrien3580 It does when it's 110 degrees, and it's only a dry heat in West Texas where the desert is. The rest of the state is pretty humid if you get out of the panhandle and desert of West Texas. The Gulf Coast and East Texas are both very humid. At least the Gulf coast can get a good breeze off the Gulf sometimes, but not East Texas. I've lived in all three so I can compare them from personal experience. BTW, Phoenix and Tuscon are places with '"dry" heat as is Death Valley. More people die from heat exposure in those areas than in the Southeast because in dry areas you also get dehydrated rapidly and don't realize it. I was stationed in the desert in the military and saw that happen a lot. You sweat a lot more in humid heat which is actually a good thing because it means your body is regulating heat better.
Check your spelling of Charleson- otherwise pretty accurate. One more shocking thing is the new people who have migrated here to escape the ills of other places - clinging to the very attitudes that ruined their former homes. Just remember why you left when you vote.
Like you, but you are clueless - visit Greenville, SC - clueless I say - visit my home in Greenville, SC and I will give you a do-over. Zero bug problem for one.

I was in Savannah once and saw some people from New York all excited putting Spanish moss in the back of their car, I just laughed and laughed knowing the chiggers were going to make their trip miserable. I would've warned them, but they were previously a bunch of jerks about something at the restaurant, so it was nice seeing some southern karma in action Also, Edisto beach is nice, but keep on mind it's not a sand beach but mostly shell and not fun
As someone who grew up in the Lowcountry and currently in the Midlands part of South Carolina, this is an excellent video of our state. Excellent job Mark. From the Mountains to the Sea.
Greenville is a great city too! A young but booming city that is a great place to set up as a base for going to the lakes or the mountains
Right

My favorite places to visit in Columbia are Riverbank Zoo and Botanical Garden and Columbia Hisoric Canal and Riverfront Park.
As a lifelong resident of SC, he hit this on head.
No beaches on hilton head are private. 12 miles of beach are open to the public. Some access points are private but the beach is public
The flying cockroaches in SC we call them water bugs !
It is putting lipstick on a pig calling them that😂
Just big ole cockroaches
I’m from Goose Creek and yes we call them waterbugs
Right ✅️.. I don't know where they the term roaches. It's definitely a difference between roaches and Waterbugs!
In the Uostate they are called palmetto bugs
Don't forget to visit Congaree National Park. Just gorgeous!

Well there are many places in the world which fit to the same kind of combination which you described.
True but the affordable factor is lessening an lessening each year - thank you Daniel Island! :)

You should visit folly beach! It's beautiful especially when the sun rises.
Very good video. I enjoyed watching it. Didn't realize the extra bugs South Carolina has. Yuck!😊❤

Charleston has its own axent. There is a huge gulla population there, so they almost have this New Orleans type axent.

I will never come to Myrtle Beach in July ever again I usually come in September and the difference was unbelievable

Negative GhostRider…..remember it as the Palmetto Tree. It saved our butts and helped America win the war.

How about the cockroaches in Hawaii! Huge! And they fly right into your face!
