I remember when I was in my Buick regal I had a house speaker it was a 15 and I had it hooked 15 house speaker and then I had a 10 house speaker in the back of the road Rio yeah but I hooked up a thousand 1200 w amp and a 800 watt amp to the 6x9s and the 1200 watt to the amp again the other one's going to the tweeters and that other beat
Google brought me here, I’ve never known the difference between monitor speakers and others. Now I have a very good understanding thanks to your description. Thanks!
+David Di Franco Thanks man, I greatly appreciate it. Now that I look back at that video, I realize it was a little over extended... but I think I got the point across..lol. Thanks again for watching and more importantly for all you do!
Ok. A question from a novice. Since my cd i listened to has already been "altered" and "beautify" in the recording studio, would it be better to play it back on a studio monitor at home than a normal house speaker since it will only be adding to another layer of "alteration", thereby changing the actual sound from cd?
I personally thought your analogy entertaining. One which certainly sticks in the mind. Plus I'll now look at the ladies when in full make-up, as in a state of "enhancement" ; )
I kind of stopped believing in hifi after I had a couple hours with Tannoy Reveal 802s (and a bunch of other monitors, just liked those the most). I don't think there's anything in the hifi world for the price that can go that loud and still not be hard on the ears.
Pro audio sounds better than home audio. If you have the money go for it, if not then find a pair on eBay. I recommend a pair of acoustic studio monitor series 3311, they come in different styles but perform identical. I have a pair and I love them.
This video just adds to another big audio myth. All loudspeakers, even studio monitors, have their own inherent audio characteristics and shortfalls. To truly hear a mix as 'true', the audio output in relation to input is obviously key, but room acoustics and speaker positioning are mostly neglected and this is where even a pair of studio monitor's sound can become coloured.
Wrong you missed the point. Keyword flat, so you can enhance with true accuracy and hear the faults regardless of speaker positioning. There’s a clear difference in sound from quality studio monitors to house speakers to bs cheap studio monitors as well as the tech that when shopping for high end or mid range quality studio monitors.
Very true with acoustic sounding that matters from design although, I have to admit, Ive been using House book shelf monitors for few years, and have amazing Mixes, from different genre's. Its more of the person behind the mastering, than the speakers itself. My book shelf speakers used are some old Bic America DV62s, and do justice for what it is, im happy with results. I am looking to get a pair of Adams monitors this weekend. I may compare both for to review my thoughts.
thanks man! been trying to decide between computer speakers and monitors and this video made me realize for just listening on my pc that computer speakers would probably be best just to enjoy listening
In the end it all comes down to the frequency response of the drivers and the tuning they have undergone. If you can calibrate your speakers, whether home or monitors will be better is debatable. Are your speakers diy? What parts did you choose? Are you using built in amps or external ones? How clean is your AC power? (yes, that's a thing...). All in all it comes down to speaker capabilities and calibration. A controlled environment without reflections is also ideal.
Which ever you feel personally fits you and your existing need & budget best. If it were me, I'd prefer to mix on the KRK's and then reference/adjust in the headphones as needed.
An excellent video. much agree with the points made. Domestic speakers do tend to be made to sound 'good' or 'nice' whereas studio monitors are designed to reproduce the signal fed to them as accurately as possible.
Better late than never my Friend ;-) I like the Way you Explain everything. So that I with my BAD English understand what u mean... I.am your new Follower.....Oh . I use the KRK Rokit 8 G3. And i,am Happy with this Speakers. Best regards and go ahead with your Vids......
Glad I ran across this, Starting a home studio as a non-musician and just gaining the facts. Would have wasted money on cool looking speakers that would have not served my purpose. Actually the cool looking speakers will work for my other main computer, but not my home studio. Very good, and simple explanation. BTW, I've had that experience with a fake chick before!!!!
Doug Wallace Thank you for taking the time to comment. I'm so glad this video was of some help. In the future, try to stay away from those "chicks" in costumes! LOL!
Your advice definitely got me on the right tract. I just wish when people are talking about a Home Studio setup on RUclips, they wouldn't call them "Speakers". Maybe they know a professional know the difference, but a novice would not have a clue, they should call them "Studio Monitors". Nonetheless, after you "calibrated" my mind to the right path, it only took me another hour of research to lead me to what I needed, a good Stereo Monitor for a small space. The iLoud Stereo Monitors www.ikmultimedia.com/products/iloudmm/
What about stage speakers? Ive got some 30w pioneer bookshelf speakers ive run a signal and the dont start getting loud till 50hz then as it goes up I can hear the dips along the way. Yea most home speakers accent the pleasant sounding frequencies of recorded music.
"sound" doesn't travel through the wires. You're right that electricity travels through it, but it then travels through a coil that generates a electromagnetic field to move a magnet attached to a cone, that cone then vibrates to create "sound".
+Austin Quon Truthfully, that is a question only you can answer. As stated in the video, studio monitors put out a very flat and natural sound. Some people do not like that and truthfully it does take some getting use to. That being said, if your looking for the "Best" sound for your gaming, I would recommend else where. Perhaps a set of speakers designed for the gaming experience.
+Drey Co The answer to that will vary from person to person. Some people don't like the flat sound that comes from most studio monitors. Some people it don't bother.
what is the technology behind making studio monitor.can some1 bought some tweeters and woofer from market and make it at home?cause studio monitor seems soo costly 'sorry for bad english'
Great video man, I've got a question about overheating problem with studio monitors. Is it a common problem from your personal experience? In my time I made a dumb decision and bought Mackie CR4 which died in 7 months due to overheating (here where I live summer is not so tough, but sometimes can give you few hellish days) and now I'm planning to buy something more expensive. The only concern I have - damn overheating, I don't want to pay a load of cash to find out that they will do the same trick and die due to overheating.
At 1:38 "...the difference is the quality of sound..." Passive vs. powered" monitors is not really an issue...The manufacturers created powered monitors more likely, because they would have a reference point to engineer the driver portion....as the amplification is a fixed value. Also, considering the relative low cost of building an amp, the builders probably think it a "convenience" to the monitor buying community. This also limits failures from customers over-powering, or under-powering passives, creating damaged drivers,.... a warranty issue resolved. Passives can operate just as cleanly as powered versions...as I have not gutted a powered monitors, but, more than likely...manufacturers created amps inside these monitors not nearly as well made in some instances, than what is available with passives.
I am just a beginner keyboardist that usually play at home. I was about to buy some yamaha speakers but after watching this, I don't think I need them since I only play for fun and not for recording. I received inaccurate information about monitors so i was confused. Thanks for your video
I liked and subbed to thiss video/channel just from the comments allone before even 30seconds in and it’s a great videoo
Thank you !
Thank you for taking the time to watch, comment and subscribe. Welcome to the family my friend!!! I greatly appreciate you and your support!!

This feels like a story my dad tells from his years at collage.
5 min story bout an ugly ass lady. speakers. K.
Not only did you answer my questions extremely well, but I also laughed my ass off the whole time! Great video man!
Google brought me here, I’ve never known the difference between monitor speakers and others. Now I have a very good understanding thanks to your description. Thanks!
Great video, dude! I loved the analogy.
+David Di Franco Thanks man, I greatly appreciate it. Now that I look back at that video, I realize it was a little over extended... but I think I got the point across..lol. Thanks again for watching and more importantly for all you do!
You the only one i found to really explain the difference.
Excellent! Thank you. Your instructions were clear, entertaining, to the point and generally brilliant. Thanks again.
Thanks for watching!!
Some of the best selling songs of all time we're mixed on home HiFi speakers. The Yamaha NS10. There still found in the worlds best studios.
True! The NS10s don't even have a flat response yet it can make mixes translate ridiculously well to all speakers.
Great analogy! This is possibly the best explanation of why you need good studio monitors that I've seen.
LOL....Thanks Chad!
What about the other way round? I want to use a studio monitor at home!
That massive speaker as your "regular house speaker"? Wahhh!?
thanks for the heads up, bro
I like this man ,he just answered my question
Thank you! Glad you found an answer!
5:01 No but I'll be damned if that wasn't the best story I ever heard.
Now that's how you break it down in a way that will help a person trying to learn the craft. (we see you, good job).
best explanation ever
Thanks man!
You guy are awesome man..........
Thanks @Annushka Nanaayakkarage

What about using studio monitors as home theater speakers as they would reveal everything as the director intended?
I kind of stopped believing in hifi after I had a couple hours with Tannoy Reveal 802s (and a bunch of other monitors, just liked those the most). I don't think there's anything in the hifi world for the price that can go that loud and still not be hard on the ears.
Dudes got a landline. So retro man!
LOL...that's not a landline. It feeds off of VOIP service (Vonage). Well, it did back when I had it 3 years ago.
best explainer video ever, I got it and laught the hell out a lot.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch it!
on the same note, would it also make sense to buy a studio monitor for my TV for watching movies or to for listening music

Go to her house and she whipped out a pair of banggood $20 studio monitors and that's when I knew I effed up

Nicholas Your very welcome!
thanks man! been trying to decide between computer speakers and monitors and this video made me realize for just listening on my pc that computer speakers would probably be best just to enjoy listening
The great thing about this video is he told what you need to hear and what you didn't. Great video !
In the end it all comes down to the frequency response of the drivers and the tuning they have undergone. If you can calibrate your speakers, whether home or monitors will be better is debatable. Long way to get there, but you are dead on my man, well done!
Great thanks for your review, what is the best choice for recording : KRK Monitor or Headphone DT770 ?
Which ever you feel personally fits you and your existing need & budget best. If it were me, I'd prefer to mix on the KRK's and then reference/adjust in the headphones as needed.
Great thanks@@LewisBeasley

Superb Analogy. Loved the way you described bro🙂

Very useful.
What if you're receiver has a flat setting? With bose speakers...
