    I still think that the watch is amazing overall (especially for the price). It's not a great bracelet, true, but it remains functional enough and doesn't detract from an otherwise wonderful appearance and design. It has the virtue of being light as well (I hate heavy bracelets, even if they're of premium quality.) The loom is questionable, but it certainly doesn't bother me. I agree that a clean silver look would appear more elegant, but this strikes me as nitpicking. Anyway, the pros heavily outweigh the cons (which you yourself suggest at the beginning).

    I have this watch. I also have the previous generation EFR-S107D, which has is not hexagonal. The new S108D improves on the older model in almost every way. This size reduction from 41mm to 39mm is very noticeable, and looks much more balanced as a result. The finishing of the case and the crown is much improved, including the transitions between the polished chamfered edges and brushed surfaces. The lume is much improved from the older model, still not great, but the indexes have lume whereas the older model didn't. The handset is also much more visible, being all white. The bracelet is a let down, but tapers nicely.
    All in all, it's an absolute stunner. 👍🏼

    • @friedhelmschroter8124

      For EFR-S107 Casio specifies 47.5×42.5×8.3mm, for EFR-S108 44.8x39.9x7.8mm. This means EFR-S108 is 2.7mm smaller (most important lug-lug: 47.5-44.8 or less important diameter 42.5-39.9).
      I agree EFR-S108 looks more nice, but people perferring large watches/having a large wrist may find EFR-S107 looks more attractive on their wrist in size relation.

    Although I'm willing to accept the bracelet (unsatisfactory though it is), the one major flaw is that the bracelet is difficult, if not impossible, to replace. I'm puzzled how Casio would not allow for this option. Not only should a bracelet be replaceable, but there should be at least a few alternative bracelets available. That's just common sense. The flaw aside, it's a great watch. My intuition, however, tells me that what Casio did is not attributable to simple stupidity or a lapse in good judgement. It may instead play a role in a subtle marketing strategy. To put it simply: design great, though imperfect, watches so as to stoke the fires of potential buyers. The very inadequacies, coupled with great quality, basically cause people to want more and more. Which generates more profit. Imperfections mean more upgrades: the customers MUST remain dissatisfied to some extent to keep them interested. In the process, Casio saves money by cutting corners. It's actually a brilliant strategy.

    • @jordiherrero6476
      @jordiherrero6476 11 месяцев назад +1

      Totally agree. I always think that all Casio models are imperfect...and easily could almost perfect. A strategy for sell more watches. All casios are very good but no one casio almost perfect. Sometimes the size is wrong...other the color...the lume...always something...ummmm...it cant be coincidence...it s done on purpose

    One thing I have noticed with people that buy dive watches is they never been diving in their whole life or even been swimming, yet people constantly complain about water resistance,lume strength and screw down crown. I own a dive watch purely because of its look, I own a dress watch, purely because of its look, I own a digital watch and also a beater watch again purely because of it look. What is the facination with RUclips reviewers as to why they complain so much when they review watches ? London, UK

    20:59 believe it or not the wd-40 idea worked! I used a thicker lubricant with a syringe added a very small amount into the link openings that can be seen on the edges when the links are folded over. It took about 10 minutes, i did have to wash with strong soap to wash away any overspill but the bracelet does not squeak anymore and sounds much much better. love the watch

    Screw down crown doesn't provide the 200m rating. It's the gasket inside. Screw down crowns just make it safer from knocks. There are 50m wr watches with screw down crowns, and 200m ones without. Manufacturers often pair these features but they aren't connected.

    I absolutely agree with every point you've made. You made a great point about how Casio just fell short of making the watch to its full potential - by having solid links and good industry-standard lume. I would gladly pay for such a premium product. Do you work in any field of design? Particularly product design? Just curious because your attention to detail fits the attributes of someone that works in that field. Great insights! Subscribed!

    Looking at 22:09 I think you are wrong to state this bracelet is integrated.
    I see dark edges all around the end-link (center part) of the bracelet clearly indicating a separate part. But in my image this end-link seems to be a very special design that does not allow any up and down movement (it is very tightly fitted, not to the sides/lugs, but to the top/watch housing). And on both sides I see something round I consider to be a spring bar that holds the end-link in position between the lugs.
    Trying to remove/Removing the end link connected to the watch lugs should clarify if this bracelet can be exchanged and attaching another bracelet would show if the watch to bracelet transition still looks reasonable. And measuring the lug width as well as the spring bar center and tip diameter would help to judge if it is easy to find a straigth ended bracelet and matching spring bar or if the spring bar can even be used on another bracelet.
    What is the thickness of the EFR-S108D bracelet? And how is it tapered?
    (I just bought an A-158 digital watch and was surprised to find that its 18mm lug-width metal band -band width 21.4mm at the lugs tapered down to 15mm over 4 links- has a thickness of just 1.9mm. It looks like 3 layers are folded/intertwined, because within the 1.9mm I can measure down to 1.6mm and at both ends there are small areas of single layer at 0.5mm thickness.
    Due to a step width of 3.8mm in length adjustment I feel an ideal tightness before and directly after 1 step adjustment, because of a little lengthening within the first days. In this ideal tight position -no up and down movement on the wrist- I never noticed any hair rip off by too tight distance between the links -link-to-link distance is difficult to measure, I estimate it typically to be 0.3mm with a minimum of 0.2 or 0.25mm, this means much larger than my thin hair- and because of no sharp edges there is also no hair shave off.)
    I understand the felt (rather heard) negative point on this hollow link bracelel is its strange sound. But in my understanding an ideally lengthened bracelet should not really move on the wrist and make any sound (on my A-158 I cannot hear any sound). Solid links do sound "better" and their heavy weight leaves somehow the impression of solidity. However, heavy weight is on the other side a negative when you permanently feel a disturbance like what is this heavy weight on my watch side wrist. And is the solidity of for example a 4mm thick watch bracelet really necessary. I think nearly nobody is able to tear a plastic band apart. And the same applies in my image to the weakest point 0.5mm thick metal band of my A-158.
    Another point ls the the long term stability in lengthening. Here I see some advantage for solid metal links, but I am asking me if it is really necessary to use 4mm thick solid links or if 2.5mm or 3.0mm thick will not show nearly the same long term stability with the advantage of a much lower weight.

    I perfectly agree with you. I bought this watch for my son's birthday last year. It looks amazing on him. He even got compliments at school. Whenever he wears (because he doesn't wear it all the time, new generation with mobile phones), it catches my eye right away, like hypnotized. But the bracelet is just terrible it doesn't match also the case. It feels tiny and it is not to the standard of the case which is "finition wise" magnificent and high quality. They just ruined it with this bracelet. It's frustrating.

    Totally agree about the lume. As a recent new watch buyer I was so disappointed that the lume on my new Casio Edifice 140D faded out in 5 minutes. Even watch reviewers don't speak about it enough - I had to really hunt for a detailed explainer on lume and how it works to try to understand why the Casio's was so poor. They just shouldn't add those damned white strips which glow only for 10 minutes.

    It’s a beautiful and underrated watch. I bought the chronograph-version with the blue bezel (EFS-S570DB). Same issue with the lume but I don’t mind… for me the shortfall is the quality of the bracelet and the difficulty to find a replacement for it.

  • @douglaswheeler4712
    @douglaswheeler4712 Год назад +2

    The bracelet of this watch is the weak (really weak) point of this watch. I've done extensive searches for a quality aftermarket bracelet for Edifice watches, modding is non existent for Edifice. Now, my EQB-1100 and my EQB-1000 both can be compared to the quality of my Oceanus (OCW-S100, T200, OCW-T2600, OCW-T3000, and my G-Steel ( GM-B2100D-1AJF, GST-B100D, GST-B200D) Watches. The Quality and finishing of of these watches are all very close. Great solid bracelets. My EFS-S570 has a hollow bracelet like the EFR-D108. The watches are both very nice but they are undermined by Edifice's Choice of an inferior hollow bracelet for these 2 models. I would swap out the bracelets in a second if there were any. It does look like the EQB-1100 bracelet might fit the 570 though, but it would cost more than the EFR-D108, . The Edifice Octagonal models are the real Casioaks, Not the 2100 models.

    Thanks for in-depth review! I've been eyeing this watch as a candidate for daily use for same criteria - not too big, not too thick, relatively clean dial, sapphire crystal, what's not to like, eh? Close-ups of case with chamfered and polished edges are sooo appealing....and then comes bracelet disappointment....wait, my cheapo Skmei with its native bracelet isn't rattling like that! But it could be link size - bigger links move more and sound is louder. Hollow links resonate too, right? I guess bracelet has hollow links to keep weight moderate as heavy bracelet of solid links and slim&light cases wouldn't go well together and that would be another complaint. Definitely worth watching this as very good manual of analyzing watch 👍
    As for lume I guess it was used because Edifice series relates to motorsports/racing - thus also screw heads used in design (which isn't my cup of tea, frankly, but if price is right and all boxes are checked I could get over it). Like you ride through night on curvy road in open roadster and check time on wrist and all that stuff.

    These watches give you so much more value for money. The luxury brands have become nothing but status symbols, fooling the rich into buying what is essentially overpriced trinkets. It used to take about $700 to make a Submariner, but stores sell it for $8,000 or more.
    But then here's Casio, asking just $100 for a quality timepiece that's more accurate. But no matter how well made it is or how accurate and reliable it is, it's not going to interest the rich because it doesn't cost $8,000.

    I've been watching tons of watch reviews lately, because I want to buy a new watch. Your review is brilliant, very honest. You seem to have the same priorities as me. Clean, simple, yet unique looks, slim, not too big but not too small either.
    You are absolutely spot on with your criticism. I can live with the weak lume, but I really don't understand why they put a non-exchangable bracelet on the watch, when so many people would like to change it for whatever reason. For example I own a Casio A700WE-1AEF, super slim watch with the most comfortable and timeless bracelet ever (not the mesh bracelet). Unfortunately the watch is too small for my taste. So now I would like to pair this Edifice with the bracelet of the A700 (or a similar one) but it's not possible. It would have been the perfect match for me. Really sad.
    However I think I will go for this Edifice because the upsides (design, size, weight, finish, Sapphire, WR, affordability, etc) outweigh the downsides by far. Thanks to your video I could make a fair assessment of this watch. You helped me tremendously. Thanks man! I wish you a happy new year.

      What is your practical experience wearing the EFR-S108 for some time?
      Can you confirm hair rip off?
      If yes, only slightly, medium or strong?
      (In my understanding hair rip off can be different from person to person, may depend on hair thickness and especially the tightness of the bracelet)
      What about the "bad feel" noise? Does it actually occur when wearing the watch longer time? (Is it really present once the band length is optimized? If yes: Is it also for you such disturbing as felt by 'Tomas watch reviews'?)
      Did you notice some lengthening of the band? If yes, how much in about which time?
      (In my case I adjusted a brand new A-158 band by 1x 3.8mm step after about 2 weeks)

    Why does it have to be so large in lug to lug. I'd love to buy this watch but 5 cm would look ridiculous

    • @friedhelmschroter8124
      @friedhelmschroter8124 3 года назад +1

      I understand lug-to-lug is 44.8mm (this 44.8mm is the correct measure to compare the optical impresson of watches on a wrist/to compare to other watches).
      50mm is an additional help information when you measure in addition the first middle part/end links of the bracelet that on this watch is not rotating/held in a fixed position by the watch house (this measure depends also on the style/construction of all the different bracelets and cannot be used to compare watches easily).
      In my understanding nobody with a wrist width of 50mm or more should have any problem. Below 50mm it is a question of your personal asthetic view of wrist-width to lug-width for which you should best try the watch in person or fix some value your consider ideal for yourself.

      Are you really sure that EFS-S570 and EFR-S108 do have the same bracelet?
      I have none in front of me, but already from the pictures/videos I have seen I concluded, both bracelets are NOT exchangeable/not the same.
      The differences are minor, yet important details.
      I agree both bracelets use the same technology and same style (both bracelets are made of U-links from the same production). But EFS-S570 has probably a 12mm slot matching the center width of the U-link while EFR-S108 has probably a 11mm slot in which a special not rotating/fixed center end-link is held against the watch wall. Looking on the direction of the U-link you can notice, in case of EFS-S570 it points towards the clasp while in case of the EFR-S108 it points in the opposite direction towards the watch house (a small and easy modification but with drastic consequences concerning interchangeability -is not possible-).
      Also the EFS-S570DC-1A has a quite high MSRP of 270$, mainly because of its gray Ion-plating coloration and I cannot imgine a rather high quality Japanes company like Casio to offer a bracelet that makes problems on 300$ watches. And long time ago (before I was born) hollow bracelets were a top item for their low weight. The real question for me is therefore, how well is this brand new 2020 design/production hollow bracelet compared to 50/70 year ago hollow production in real use over long time.
      Solid has clearly more inherent long term stability and also a different kind of noise but solid comes with the not avoidable great disadvantages of highest weight and highest cost and a 1.9mm thin folded watch band like it came with my just 20$ Casio A-158 is an impossible to reach thinness for solid (I estimate 2.5 perhaps 2.0mm is the lowest possible thinness with most solid bracelets offered around 3.5/4.0mm thickness).
      For me it would be interesting to see how this brand new hollow bracelet is constructed internally to have a first feeling on its longer term solidity.
      I just checked some huge watch, the Casio ECB-10D-2AEF and found solid links in the same U-link with a Casio ask price of just 160€ (I estimate this bracelet has a 13mm wide end-link and 24/26mm wide band so does not match). This low price for solid makes me even more wondering why Casio decided to offer hollow up to about 300$ and strongly questions for me the strong bashing of Tomas Watch Reviews against this hollow bracelet with the main reason given "It sounds strange which tells no good quality". For me a bracelet should be noiseless and it should also be clear that a hollow thin sheet metal bracelet should give another sound than a solid braclet with large contact area. So the point is, does somebody want to wear the bracelet well sitting/adjusted in length not to rip-off hair and not to make noise (my A-158 folded metal watch band is free of any noise) or are there a lot of people who like to wear this bracelet very loose to "enjoy" the hair rip-off as well as get distorted by noise.
      And I would consider seriously the question of some form of lubing to counteract the noise once it is clear/confirmed that this hollow bracelet has a sufficiently long wear/use time (my target would be 30 years minimum).

    • @mariuszsch.79
      @mariuszsch.79 3 года назад +1

      @@friedhelmschroter8124 The bracelets are not identical, I just meant the same technology behind it. Rolled links basically. I bought the EFS-S570 and the bracelet is actually ok. It's looks doesn't give away it's rolled, it's light but strong. Feels like it's gonna last a lifetime. When not on the wrist, it's a bit jingly-jangly, but when worn, no strange noises. I wear it tight though. It definitely doesn't feel premium but it's ok.
