This is about his freind a rock star that said he couldnt perform or create when Sober. How do you help a rock star? They have all the money and connections to self destruct. He made a song to save his friend this is it, it's about fighting addiction. There is a live version of this from the 93 that shows the passion with which he aproaches this attempt to save his friend from addiction its titled "Tool - Sober Live (Pro Shot) Remastered". It's a very popular reaction you can see his passion for helping addicts in it.

I'd consider this a really mainstream song of theirs. It was played a LOT when this album released and I still hear radio play of it today
