U2 and Springsteen both have tremendous respect for each other. Bono inducted Bruce into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and Springsteen inducted U2 in 2005. They are both great songwriters.
Wow -- didn't know footage existed of this. I was there and remember it well. Little Steven opened for U2 that night, and we had a suspicion that Bruce might be lurking around. A few songs before Bruce came out they had a guy come out of the crowd and play Bono's acoustic guitar for one of their songs (since Bono was unable) -- one of my buddies ( a Bruce fanatic) thought Bono's request for Bruce was done mockingly...until Bruce walked out and started playing. My got emotional...
The boss is the epitome of American Freedom. He is a true artist singing about his experience sharing his life and times. You can choose to like him or not, as an American we have that privilege. I love this true American artist and hope he has the strength to entertain for years to come
To all the people that were there that night remember leaving the stadium singing “how long must we song this song” until we got to the car? Best concert ever!
One of the most indelible remembrances of that evening. I was with a bunch of guys and girls, and we held hands and "daisy-chained" our way out of the stadium singing that line over and over.
I was 16 yrs old and saw these legends on stage performing this. ahhhh if i could go back in time and see again with mature eyes. i still remember them standing back to back singing.
Now I remember this... I was a freshman in High School back then. It was my first U2 concert. It was awesome because Bruce was my other favorite artist at the time. Ahh the days of good old JFK Stadium.
Unbeatable performance!!!!!!!iUseful if someone should ever ask you for a definition of Rn'R magic and power....this is the perfect answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This version gives you shivers anytime you listen to it,I think this it's probably the best duet in their career, maybe one of the best duet ever made... it's not a matter of egos, it's a matter of feelings...2 voices charged with the same fuel working perfectly toghether....it's art, that's all
How can you say that Bruce Springsteen's albums flop? He has many #1 hits and albums, including Born to Run and his Live 75-85 album. He has won and nominated for countless awards for his music including "Streets of Philidelphia", "Dead Man Walking" and most recent he is up for an award for "The Wrestler". If you saw him live like I have he is amazing at what he does. He puts his heart and soul into every performance he gives. And his music is so deep and moving including the lyrics.
I was blessed to be there as well. Such an exciting moment - my wife (fiance' at the time) still jokes about how excited I was when the Boss walked on stage.
...and the hits just keep on comin' even if it is in the key of me....when it's live [1987] you know it ain't jive. Thanks to all who keep this on youtube.
damn... im from 89' i lost so many great artists through my life.. now i start to appreciate the great songs and artists... durring my childhood i was listening to crap that mtv fed me with. Now i start listening something way better ! Its good to not be a child anymore !
I was at this concert. Remember it like yesterday. 1987. College days for me. Hugh, hugh crowd at JFK Stadium Philly. Bullet the Blue Sky with the airplane, the kid who came up and could not play guitar, then Bruce in the encore. Joshua Tree tour. Awesome - gives me shivers just remembering that night.
I've been to a ton of shows over the years, but being there live to see this was a top-5 moment for me. Was a crazy-good show period, but after fighting up front (at about 19 years old), watching people passed over our heads to the stage before the show as they were too hot etc., and as night fell, the weather got perfect and U2 rocked the house. Having Bruce come out was icing on the cake.
AWESOME! Thanks for posting this. I was about 10 feet from the front of the stage! I had just gone to the Grateful Dead concert the night before and hadn't slept for 36 hours! GOOD TIMES
I was at this show, standing pretty much where the cameraman was originally oriented. It was a nice addition to the evening. I'm not the biggest Springsteen fan, but I appreciate his contributions to the musical landscape. Most of what I remember was being disappointed they didn't play "Wire" nor "Red Hill Mining Town" - the two best songs, in my opinion, from their two most recent albums, at that point.
I was there. JFK Philly. Same place as USA Live Aid. 100,000 people. Bono hurt his arm earlier in the tour. He pulled a kid out of the audience earlier to play guitar for him. He said he needed someone else to play.. If I remember right this was toward the end of the regular show.
This footage was shot for the film Rattle And Hum by Phil Joanou (circa 1987/88). Rumor around the campfire is that it ended up in the cutting room floor because Joanou felt it did not add anything to the "musical journey" the band was trying to capture at that stage of their careers. Thank you Phil!
Bono fell of the stage during rehearsals, and dislocated his shoulder or fractured his amr so they played with his arm on a sling for a couple of weeks Around the same time, other rock bands were cancelling due to rain or of the slinger had the sniffles - but U2 and The Boss just keep on playing!
Someone's asking someone to stay with him... The world keeps on turnin' and time's slippin' away... We might be talented butterflies searching for our 4 days of glory... My flight is aiming to bring you by my side... cause the night has come, and the land is dark, and you know I won't shed a tear, just as long as you wake... as you wake up with me.
@PSUtotheBCS so does bruce! he repeats the "i won't cry part" when one time it should be "no i won't be afraid." i think they definitely make up for it though haha
U2 AND Springsteen!
Can it be any better?
NO
So many
Yes, definitely.
2 icons singing together one of the greatest songs of all time! Amazing
U2 and Springsteen both have tremendous respect for each other. Bono inducted Bruce into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and Springsteen inducted U2 in 2005. They are both great songwriters.

A fantastic combination of two of the best artists there are ...
Now I remember this... I was a freshman in High School back then. It was my first U2 concert. It was awesome because Bruce was my other favorite artist at the time.
Ahh the days of good old JFK Stadium.
I was in the front row for this

Upon hearing this duet gives me goosebumps Fabulous

I was there that night in philly two of my friends left but we hard core stayed and we got a great end to the show!!!!!!!

I have the greatest respect for these guys. Love you guys, U2 and Bruce.
Wow, I was at this show-U2 @ JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Fun Performance of a Great Song
This music was played an year before I was born...but still says more to me than musics from the time I started to listen to music
Music never goes out of time
In that audience. I was 2 weeks from leaving the Navy. 100 years ago it feels like...

And Bruce wasn't playing his guitar. Wireless technology did not exist in 1987 and is guitar is clearly not wired.
best concert i ever went to!
together are perfect, i love their music

Bono fell of the stage during rehearsals, and dislocated his shoulder or fractured his amr so they played with his arm on a sling for a couple of weeks
Around the same time, other rock bands were cancelling due to rain or of the slinger had the sniffles - but U2 and The Boss just keep on playing!
