Phil Silvers was hysterical....I couldn't help but laugh when he said he was loaded and then Richard Burton came to accept an award. Imagine how loaded HE was. Classy show and great seeing all those brilliant performers in their youth.. Ann Bancroft was a goddess. When she giggled when Patty Duke gave her the envelope- it was so genuine. What fun......thanks Miss Pooch for posting these. classics.
. I started watching them in the mid 70's when I came to study in this country. I appreciate very much to see these older ones. You are doing a fantastic job for our pleasure and thank you enormity.
Leave it to the legendary Frederic March to remind everyone to take their time coming to the stage, to enjoy the moment and to receive the applause they deserved for winning their awards.
I have on the 2015 Tony Awards while I'm watching this. Quite a difference in presenters. I doubt over fifty years from now this year's presenters will be the legends the 1961 presenters are.
Thank you so much for posting these vidoes. What fun!! Seeing the faces and hearing the names of such legends, including Bea Lillie and Frederick March. What extraordinarty talents!
Not very many of these people are still with us, so this a wonderful addition to the RUclips theater collection. The brilliantly goofy Channing's still around, nearly 98, Elizabeth Seal, Anna Maria Alberghetti, Eddie Hodges. Anyone else among the stars appearing who are still living?
[ 18:37 ] I love how Anne Bancroft and Patti Duke react to each other, and Anne jokingly pushes Patti away - reminiscent of the struggles between them in the play MIRACLE WORKER. Interesting that Anne and Sidney appear together - Anne would present Sidney with his Best Actor Oscar 3 years later.
even so, they would probably still be the same as the '60 and '61 tony's something tells me they didn't start performing scenes from the shows until they started televising the show nationally
thank you, Miss PS! Another time capsule broadcast. First Tony Awards show I've seen that was before my time, Is it me, or did Phil Silvers really seem miffed about losing?
Despite the closing credit indicating it was a live telecast, I suspect that the 1961 Tony's were not only only broadcast locally, but they aired on tape-delay at 11:15 P.M., bumping the start of WCBS-TV New York's late movie by an hour.
Does Geraldine Page name A Taste of Honey as a best play nominee at 22:17? It is NOT listed on the Tony Award website nor Wikipedia as a nominee. However, it is a nominee in an article in The New York Times of March 28, 1961. What gives?
First off let me thank Miss PoochSmooch for this treasure trove of Broadway memorabilia. But did I miss something or was there no Tony Award given for Best Actor Drama in 1960?
While it is true that ABC did air the first coast-to-coast televised Tony Award ceremony in 1967, these '60-'61 ceremonies shouldn't be discounted, since they were both televised (albeit locally) and preserved for posterity, as evinced by our viewing them here on RUclips...
Talk about painting with a broad brush! Just because some persons protest by kneeling during the anthem does not mean all liberals are against the anthem. Watch something other than FOX
@@bman560 Maybe so, but the left is trying to ban the National Anthem and replace it with John Lennon's Imagine. For real. Our country is going down the crapper and everyone is trying to rewrite history to suit their own SJW agendas and soon, nobody is going to know what we went through to get to where we are today.

So simple, so elegant, and just real!
Wonderful. And hearing and seeing Eleanor Steber was superb

The performers had So Much Class then. First Class.

He's such a great actor!
Thank you for posting this incredible hour...if only awards shows were still like this.
If only Brodway shows were still like this. Pure shit on Broadway today, like Hamilton.
Chris C, Camelot is coming to Luncoln Center this spring. Maybe you'd enjoy that one
I was ten years old !! I'm now, 71 going on 72, God willing !🙏
Burton - handsome and a gentleman. Stunning.

And now sadly channing is gone
Julie Andrews, thank you!
been wanting to see the old tony awards ty and keep bringing

Thanks for the cool insight
its a shame that the 1962-1966 tonys are lost to time. i would have liked to see them.
even so, they would probably still be the same as the '60 and '61 tony's something tells me they didn't start performing scenes from the shows until they started televising the show nationally
Me too. I would have loved seeing Angela as well as Beatrice Arthur winning.
@@garydeblasio8810 I read that the actor who played Mame's nephew also won, said to be the youngest winner ever. Would've loved to see that moment.
So polite,from start to finish!
I thought it was an ingenue making her way to the stage and it was Lillian Gish!
Julie Andrews, Carol Channing, and Beatrice Lillie would appear together in the movie Thoroughly Modern Millie in a short six years.
BRAVO!!! Frederick MARCH!!!
thank you, Miss PS! Another time capsule broadcast. First Tony Awards show I've seen that was before my time, Is it me, or did Phil Silvers really seem miffed about losing?
I love Miss PoochSmooch.
Nice thrill to see this!

That is so classic
Interesting that so many of the theater awards were presented by Oscar winners.
Many Oscar winners were also Tony award winners.

Was Kay Medford smoking on her way up the stairs to accept Gower's Tony? Awesome.
Robert Goulet... hubba hubba.
wow that lady beat out julie andrews....nice...
Does anyone know the name of the score playing at 25:30 after Paul Newman announced Bye Bye Birdie for Best Choreography?
Well, Christopher, there were 2 persons OF color; Sidney Poitier and…. Carol CHANNING (“PASSING”) for the OG-MCs…poco a poco, ERVIN MUNRO!
SMOKIN!!!
First off let me thank Miss PoochSmooch for this treasure trove of Broadway memorabilia. But did I miss something or was there no Tony Award given for Best Actor Drama in 1960?
Man julie andrews and carol channing looked so different then
Who was that who accepted the award for Colleen Dewhurst? It is on the tip of my tongue, but I'm stuck. Was it ZaSu Pitts?
Lillian Gish?
When did the Tony's first air on network TV??
altfactor 1967

If Julie Andrews won a Tony she would have an EGOT. She was even nominated for two, in '57 and '61. So close...
She was also nominated in thr mid 90s but declined the nomination
Funny
How was Camelot not nominated for Best Musical?
Shirley Booth can’t read?
Omg can’t imagine liberals having the Anthem sung at the tonies these days
Talk about painting with a broad brush! Just because some persons protest by kneeling during the anthem does not mean all liberals are against the anthem. Watch something other than FOX
Being a liberal does not make one unpatriotic. This is a stupid comment.

The National Anthem beforehand?
Weird.
And what a terrible rendition.
