I think there should be an official POTY ( part of the year) since the social media skate era is so rapid and makes it hard to keep up with individual skaters. I think a dope part will always stand out regardless of skateboarding’s current social climate.
I think that could work well if it was split into 2 categories- commercial (released under a sponsor) and independent. This would be necessary in today's climate because not all edits that come out are necessarily 'parts,' as they aren't part of a longer full length. Having a commercial category could include both traditional video parts and single skater x sponsor edits ie Tiago x NB or TJ Rogers x eS
In Thrasher magazine they have some fun, unofficial winners of randon shit. Its in the back of the SOTY issue. 25 bucks a year for 12 issues aint bad y'all, if you can still read paper @@normanl.6891

Nyjah should win by default, hes become skateboardings Leonardo chasing after that well deserved oscar. On a more realistic note, definitely rob pace. Hoping dylan jaeb can compete for soty next year with some more parts and nbds.
Let's look at overall: Jah: street 9 + contests 8 = Pace Street 9 + contests 3= Obviously Thrasher does not factor contests in that much but even just a bit and it's very lopsided.
Dude I actually think Thrasher demotes skaters for being successful in contests. Just look at the last decade of SOTYs and none of them skated contests (or were winners). Jah went undefeated the year he put out Fade to Black and that should’ve been his first SOTY. He wasn’t as successful in contests last year from injury but still made podiums. But his two parts were the gnarliest we’ve ever seen in street skating, like by a lot. Genuinely think Nyjah should be the 2-time SOTY and Tyshawn shouldn’t have even won his first. With him it’s almost never been about skating ability, he’s an incredible skater but has very little variety (mostly pops and gaps, very little rails). He’s never been a SOTY level skater and his first one had a lot to do with fashion culture it seemed like (I literally couldn’t find a street part from him the year he won his first, not even close to SOTY level).
This year is so hard! But I have to give it to Shecks man. His part was fucking bananas and for him to go through everything he did and show out like that just hit so hard. I grew up watching him as a kid so I'm certainly a little biased but I never expected him to come out that big either.
Ha. The company I used to ride for put out a promo of me in 2007/2008 with no makes. Love that they did that. Also, can’t wait to see what Pedro Delfino does in his part!
The other thing you forgot to mention is sponsors. Recent winners have tended to have big, Thrasher-friendly backers ready to splash some cash getting ads into the magazine. Tyshawn had Supreme and adidas, Mason Real and Nike etc. Being sponsored by Santa Cruz and Emerica might put Rob Pace at a slight disadvantage. He'd be the first winner since Jamie Foy in 2017 not to have one of the big shoe brands supporting him.
Correlation isn't causation. Most skaters ride for big companies, especially ones considered the best and most in the public eye. Also, foy rides for new balance...not exactly a poor core company. New balance is one of the biggest skate brands at the moment. Iow you're ridiculous.
This year certainly seems more open than years past, and my guess is that someone who Thrasher endorses more than these guys (like you said, Braden, Miles, etc) comes through with a banger part to push them to the championship
amazing how it is possible to granularly break it down and go full-on into analytics and actually make a numerically supported case for a winner, when in reality it seems like it is nothing more than politics and a decision made upon no data imo :D
I really like what Jaakko has done this year! rampage mode: creative, gnarl and tech. Id give to him or Gio, our brazilian gingerzilla! What a form and trick selection those two have.
The only thing that counts is what Thrasher views as the person who represents the core, skate life world the best that year. All the data and view counts in the world can't quantify that. But I do appreciate and enjoy watching dumb data try, haha.
I'd say Yuto if he wins the SLS Super Crown in December. This year Yuto won Tampa Pro, the X Games, the inaugural Uprising Tokyo, plus his Nike SB part, and debuting his own trick the Yutornado in competition. You add the SLS super crown to that and its a convincing argument. That being said, I hope Pace wins lol
