Great video. Cracked up when you dropped the sprocket twice!! Correct thickness of replacement shim is N=T+(A-V) where T is the thickness of the old shim, A is the valve clearance measured, N is the thickness of the new shim and V is the desired valve clearance
a friendly tip. invest in rubber floor mats around ur work table just in case a precision part of the car falls of the table it wont get damaged. and its good on the feet too.
My experience with Toyota lifters is that a magnet is very helpful. The lifter buckets on my 1uz are aluminum while the shims are steel. This means you can pull the lifter as a unit or just the lifter depending on how you use your magnet. Be very careful not to scratch the shim when removing it from the magnet. I found a small amount of motor oil to be helpful with this. Hope this helps!
Peter you are officially my favorite Toyota mechanic! 👍 Usually when I drop parts I get really angry. You dropped the sprocket 2 times, no sweat👍 well done.
Uhm...I thought checking the valve cleance requires 1) cold engine; 2) timing set to 0 and both valves loose; 3) stick feeler gauge under the lobe and above the lifter to measure any gap. Measuring the shim does not check the gap.

really nice video, I love to work on Japanese cars, and now I bought a Toyota 4 runner and I replace the heads gaskets but when I put everything back together I made a mistake, I put some of those valve lifters on aleatory place because before I don't know about this valve shims for the valve adjusting, and actually the engine has a really bad valve noise, i need to fix it and this video help me a lot, tanks
On the 2uz-fe VVTI V8 what is normally seen overtime with wear? Do the gaps widen or narrow. Any difference seen between the exhaust side verses the intake side? Thanks
Hi Peter, thanks to share your knowledge. I did a great effort to understand english, but i got it. I´ve two questions, 1) do you know what shim thickness for a 7AFE corolla motor and 2) i don´t understand why add 0.20 mm to total? if i suppose that 3.03 is original thickness.
oka! i found a autozone manual to know the exactly shim size to toyota motors, similar than you explanation. i asked cause i´ll trait to do this procedure in my corolla 1995. thanks, have a good day.

my toyota shakes violently when i go over 65mph but once i hit 85 it goes away slightly but not all the way would this be the problem for that or is it just the valve cover gasket???

Look this is not a very good video to explain how to do the shims on a Toyota 1992 to 2002 twin cam motor. You do not have to remove the cams just to replace the shims in this motor. Measure the back of the cam lobe to the original old shim. Work out what shim size you need. Use a shim bucket depressor tool to take the old shim out and to put the new shim in. Release the shim bucket depressor tool off the cam shaft and use it on the next shim bucket. Do this with all the valve shims and the motor is good to go. Do not use a round pick to get the old shims out as this never works, instead use a very small thin bladed screw driver and this will work every time. To do this job just take take the spark plugs out then the valve cover off and go ahead turning the cam shafts around with a spanner on the tool flats cast onto the cam shafts. Turn the cam shafts and do the shims as you go. It is very easy to do. You do not have to take any thing apart to do this job.
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Hi well at least we had a good look inside the top of the motor with your video. I own one of these cars and have done the shims a couple of times now. They are good motors. Mine has 307,000 kms on it now and has never given me any trouble.

Man absolute trash. Doing this on my Camry right now. I come from the honda world where valve adjustments just involve a screw and locking nut. This shim BS is absolutely ignorant. I'm gonna fix this POS and sell this car and move back to honda. Thank GOD it is just my exaust valves that are out of spec.
