- This is a video of the garden taken this morning. The plants are now starting to die down and prepare for winter. We still haven’t had a frost here yet so the tender plants are still growing well. I will however, start lifting them out in a week or so’s time and potting them up to go into our house or outhouse. I have not done much ‘gardening’ here this year as because of the pandemic I have only had 11 visitors all year. We had over 500 last year! This has given me a chance to just let the garden do it’s thing without me cutting back and primping and preening it so the garden is very overgrown and untidy compared to usual. The plants on the patio were either for sale on our garden open day (that didn’t happen) or are newly acquired and will be added to the garden planting for next year.
Even though it’s a mess I hope you still enjoy the walk around. I have a few ideas for replanting etc for next year and a lot of areas will be cleared ready for new plants. I hope to re turf the lawn next year also.

I've seen many many video's on youtube but your garden is the greatest inspiration source i've seen. Just moved to another house and in the spring i'm starting with my new backyard. I've already over 60 species of tropical plants collected over the last 7 years. Can't wait to finally put them in the ground since i've only using pots over the last few years (i had a really small garden)

Always a joy to view your bit of paradise. Fun to see it in a somewhat more exuberant state. I’m continually impressed by the various unifying features you have implemented that define this as a garden and not a jungle. By example, during this visit the frequent appearance of palmate leaves caught my attention.

The white dahlia, is it ‘Twyning’s After Eigth’? I live in the west midlands and it’s one of the tough and reliable dahlias :) love it
Thank you 🙏 Yes it is ‘Twynings After Eight’ It’s one of the earliest to flower here and keeps flowering through to the first frosts.

Hi Sue, We haven’t had a family meeting about it yet but IF we do decide to open, it will be on the 20th of August. this year. I just get the garden ready. It’s the rest of my family that do everything else from cake baking to plant sales so it’s a real team effort and we all need to be there to make the day enjoyable for visitors.

So beautiful. So sumptuous. So glorious. So balanced. Had me completely salivating and wanting to visit next year. The only thing I felt this vid lacked was a better view of the canopy overhead to reflect more of the maturation of the garden over time. The planting, though, is exquisite!

Oops I just now saw that you answered the question of what the purple flower plant is - Salvia ‘Amistad’. I got lucky and found the name of it myself doing a shot in the dark google image search for purple flowering plants. I got mega lucky and found the name somehow! I’m glad I did indeed get it right because right away I bought one! What a stunning plant! Of course you have plenty of stunning plants in your garden and a good eye for knowing where to place them! Thanks for sharing and inspiring us all!

👋👋Hi Bev and thank you!🙏 It was such a shame that HTUK lost all that data! I had years worth of my blog deleted and couldn’t bothered to reload it all back up again. I had the whole of the gardens progress documented on there and it would have been a great source of information for people seeing these videos now. 😭

Hi Steve, I live in abingdon as well and would love to hear some tips on winter care and hopefully see your garden in person if possible.
Hi Ajun, I’ve only just seen this!🤪 What part of Abingdon do you live? It would make all the difference as to overwintering techniques. I have free draining soil here and the garden is south facing. Some parts of Abingdon are heavy clay and so would require a different winter protection plan.

Hi Steve! Your garden looks amazing you really achieved to recreate the magical tropical ambience in a temperate zone. I could see how you were able to transform your space through the years from the flat dull lawn to this marvelous oasis filled with an increasing number of beautiful plants every year more refined and unusual. I’m into tropical gardening myself and I’m testing and selecting plants that can go well in my area. Can I ask you some plant names? I’m absolutely in love with your big Eucomis, the one you can see at 2:48. What is the species? And I'm going crazy to identify also the plant at minute 0:43 in front of a pinnate palm (maybe Butia) and the one at minute 4:23 next to the pole with similar leaf. Congrats again!

Hi Roman and thank you!🙏 The plant is Roldana petasitis (velvet groundsel) (Give me a PM on GOTE if you can’t source it)
The Salvia amistad kept its height from last year (6ft) but I cut them down to 3ft in spring and they’ve grown huge again so must cut them to ground next spring.

@@nikolinda You are welcome. Some of the palms are small or are ones that I have grown from seed myself but the majority of them are planted in the garden. You just can’t see them as the planting is so thick. The Parajubaea and the Jubaea may be removed next year as they grow so slowly.
I wanted to grow every different hardy palm that I could when I started so that’s why I have so many but only a few are really worth growing in a uk garden and to be honest, sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between the varieties at a glance. Most of the ‘backbone’ palms can be seen here in these pictures taken in Dec 2013

Thanks Kev 🙏 The plant is Begonia ‘Glowing embers’ it’s lifted out and potted up each year and left to die back to the tuber in winter. It then re sprouts in spring and gets planted out again.

Had to come back this year for a tropical fix. Love your garden. Any tips with amstaid. I live in cork city ireland south facing garden. I grew it last yr , loved it but now its july 9 th and all i can see is 1 stragley piece about 4 " long. We do have a lot of slugs do you think they might be the problem thank you.

Thank you 🙏 The lowest temperatures in the last few years has been about -8c The garden has experienced a prolonged temperature of -12c BUT not since it has matured. Last winter we only recorded a few nights of -5c which is no problem at all.
Wow your garden looks brilliant like a true jungle. Do you know of any species of bamboo that is hardy in the U.K and which would stay 6ft or lower in a pot?

Thank you!🙏 Its about 78ft long and 28ft wide. Approximately the same size as a tennis court. Remember to use big plants in a smaller space to give impact. You can then always plant underneath too so yo don’t really lose any space on the ground but take advantage of the space above your head 👍

Thank you Jessica🙏 I do propagate some of my own plants but I also get given some by other hobbyists when we do plant swaps. And I grow things from seed also.
I love what you have achieved. After seeing that my Tetrapanax is coming out of the pot (when risk of frost has passed) and going into the ground. What is the spotty ground covering plant at 3.53?
Thank you🙏 Tetrapanax do tend to send out lots of pups but if you are happy to snap them off or dig/pull them out then it will grow much better than in a pot. The plant at 3.53 is Farfugium japonicum Aureomaculatum

Thank you Mike 🙏 Yes, as far as I’m concerned, it is important to attract as much wildlife into the garden as possible. I mainly grow flowers that are beneficial to bees and butterflies. We get birds, bees, insects, moths, dragon flies, frogs, newts, hedgehogs, foxes all living in or visiting the garden. I’ve recently added some logs at the back of the borders to attract beetles etc that the hedgehogs will feed on.
Hi. In one of your videos, you show a fairly large plant with black leaves and an orange or red flower. Is this a Dahlia and if so, can you tell me which one please? If it isn't can you tell me what it is? Thanks x

Is the purple/blue plant at 11.15 a salvia? And if so, how do you get them to grown so tall :O
omg 😱 I live in a tropics & I am so ashame. How you do it? Wht happen when it's winter?? It's amazing. 11 yrs?! I'll be thrilled if my plants past 1 year 😅
Thanks Teresa🙏 Most of my palm trees will grow happily here, taking our winters in their stride. A lot of the gingers, dahlias and cannas etc die back to corms or rhizomes over winter and can be protected outside with a mulch of compost or manure if needed. It still looks tropical in winter with the palm trees and evergreen plants but with no colour from flowers etc. In spring there are various varieties of alliums that come up and then self seeded poppies. When these stop flowering they are cut down so that all the other plants that have been dormant can take over the show.
