- My personal Top 20 Favorite Large Foliage Plants in our garden of this year.
I've got many more beautiful foliage plants like Hostas, Astilboides, Petasites & Syneilesis etc. But they're not on this list because they're still small plants and some of them really are terrorized by snails and caterpillars.
My top 20:
20: Persicaria virginiana 'Compton's form'
The persicaria with the largest leaves in our garden, I really like the overall exotic look of it.
19: Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty'
A beautiful and weird looking plant for full shade, easy to grow and never disappoints.
18: Ligularia przewalskii
Also a beautiful plant for a shady spot, the leaves are really beautiful and it gets some nice yellow flowers too.
17: Arisaema candidissimum
The flower is of this Arisaema is breathtaking, but the leaves are also beautiful and impressive.
16: Darmera peltata
Very strong plant with large leaves, beautiful near a pond and can handle some bright sunlight.
15: Sauromatum venosum
An aroid with a great exotic look, they really make a statement in our garden, can grow in shade and full sun, if the soil is moist enough.
14: Peltoboykinia watanabei
You don't see this one quite often in gardens and I don't know why beacause everything is beautiful about this plant. Nice shape, texture and size of it's leaves, great for an exotic garden!
13: Canna lillies: I've got many Canna species in the garden, to me they're essential in an exotic garden. Large tropical leaves and beautiful flowers.
12: Ricinus communis
Tall annual plant with big red leaves, great to make combinations with other exotics and to fill gaps in the border.
11: Fatsia japonica 'Annelise'
Beautiful and strong hardy exotic plants for a shady spot. The leaves of the Annelise are smudged with golden-yellow and lime green.
10: Musa basjoo
The most hardy banana with impressive exotic leaves.
9: Farfugium japonicum 'Giant'
Beautiful large and shiny green leaves. Also a nice plant for a shady spot, but the greatest thing about this one: It's evergreen!!!
8: Musa sikkimensis 'Red Tiger'
Amazing leave color and has stronger leaves than the Basjoo.
7: Colocasia esculenta 'Pink China'
Fantasic hardy exotic plant, at the end of summer the leaves can grow really big!
6: Sauromatum nubicum
Same as venosum but the leaves ar just massive! Great for a tropical look in the border! The smelly flower in spring is also larger!
5: Paulownia tomentosa
Another giant! After the winter you have to prune it back to the ground to get these big leaves. Can easily grow 3 meters in 1 summer, very impressive!
4: Ensete ventricosum Maurelli
Very beautiful large banana with big red/ green leaves. Not hardy but easy to overwinter indoors.
3: Brassaiopsis mitis
Very strange looking aralia and one of the rarest plants in my garden. The leaves can grow quite large. I really love the shape of it's leaves. Does well in a container. I don't know if it's 100% hardy in the Netherlands, time will tell ;)
2: Gunnera manicata
A real giant exotic looking plant. One of the plants in the garden that gets all the attention. The leaves are massive and really strong! It gets weird looking flowers and the strongs stems are covered with (non painfull) green spines, really beautiful! Not the most easy garden plant because it needs lots and lots of water!
1: Tetrapanax payrifera 'Steroidal Giant'
Another exotic with a "wow factor". This giant is just as impressive as the Gunnera, but it's easier to grow. In a few years it can grow into a small tree. In full sun it grows amazingly fast! It can spread rapidly like weed, but the new plants are easy to remove. It flowers in autumn.

Prachtig!

Oooh! I love Arisaema candidissimum. The lovely pink and white pinstriped variety, right? The most expensive little bulb/corm I ever bought. I still pine for it years later.
Yes, it's one of the most beautiful Arisaemas!

Thanks, the names of the plants are also in the description of the video.
The Paulownia Tomentosa is beautiful but unfortunately it turns into a huge tree, not suitable for small gardens
It's beautiful indeed and can only be grown in small gardens when you prune it back to the ground each year and leave one growing point. You'll get huge leaves which are very exotic.
