How to clean cement from tools

  • The easiest way to clean mortar, cement or plaster from trowels is to brush them clean using a bucket of clean water during use, but if you find you forgot to clean your trowel and the mortar/plaster/tile adhesive has set hard on the trowel you can easily clean it off using this method. Once clean if you apply a little light oil to the trowel it will stop the trowel going rusty before it is used again. There is no need to apply any oil to stainless steel trowels as they should not rust, but steel ones will because the steel is absorbent.

    My dad was a builder... as a child I used to sit and watch him working . He always cleaned the tools he was using and oiled them.. That was 50 years ago.... I am still using some of those tools now.. ( The rest were stolen from the shed) . I am still using paint brushes I bought 30+ years ago .... and my dads pasting brush is still going strong ( must be about 70 years old now) It pays to buy decent tools and to look after them...

      Blimey that puts me to shame, whilst I clean and look after my tools I tend not to care much about brushes and often end up throwing them (I only normally use cheap ones).

      I use cheap brushes for 'cheap' jobs like spreading wood hardener or masonry paint on stippled surfaces... but for good paint jobs I use really good brushes.. and look after them.. Less likely to have straggled hairs getting in the paint. I have done my own DIY for years until more recently . Due to health issues, now I can't get up ladders etc.... I was only replacing cracked bathroom tiles a few days ago following getting a new bathroom suite installed ( a sit down job) .... The plumber couldn't believe I had done it myself. Not bad for an old girl! hehehe. Love your vids by the way..

      I normally wash the mortar off as soon as possible using a small stiff brush and bucket of water, but this time I left the trowel on the roof in the sun whilst I went to mix some more mortar so it hardened on. I then cleaned it a couple of days later.

    Nice one chez..........When a guy comes on to one of my jobs i usually have a sneaky look in his toolbag / box , if his tools look like they are looked after it usually means that he knows what he's doing and i dont worry too much , on the other hand if he comes with a bag of rust then that usually means he's a chancer and i watch him like a hawk and get rid of him if he's not up to scratch , which is the usual case with the bag of rust brigade...
    Harsh maybe , but it works for me....... : )

    I have had a Bosch chop saw for about 10 years, it has had a good deal of use but like yourself, I look after my tools (I was a shopfitter for about 14 years) my nephew came to visit 2 weeks ago, we were in my workshop (shed) and he thought I had bought a new one, he couldnt believe it when I told him how old it was.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 лет назад +1

      I used a spray penetrant first (I often use WD-40, as I have a few tins in the garage). Once cleaned I gave the trowel a light coating of oil, you can basically use any kind of oil for doing this. It will protect the surface and stop it rusting. When you come to use the trowel, just wipe off the oil.

      I have had that problem too. I managed for years by using it with the mortar caked on the inside of it, until I lent it to a mate from work and he chiseled it all out. If you have an air compressor you can remove most of it easily using a pneumatic chisel. I did try putting a few bricks in it with some water before that, but it tends to just break the bricks up and make them smaller!
      Someone once recommended using brick acid, but I have not tried it!
