This is the first tech review video that I can honestly say was almost perfect. Four reasons: 1. I love coffee and when I get a travel mug it is a big decision on which one to get 2. You read my mind when you said it could be a gift from someone who has no clue what to get me. I deal with this every birthday. 3. I was hesitant to say anything about the price but you took care of that for me. 4. "Drink your coffee before it gets cold!" Absolutely brilliant advice. Thanks for being genuine!
I love your sense of humor! I show the video to my mum for the cup and the thing she commented on was how good you were first not the cup!!! Good job keep it yup!!!
I think you absolutely nailed the "gift from someone who doesn't know what to get me" angle - I'd kind of love to get one of these too, but wouldn't dream about ever dropping that much money on a mug. I think I'm too impatient with my coffee anyway. Great video, well produced and no fluff or filler - glad MrMobile pointed me in this direction!
I saw this mug in Mr. Mobile video and had to suscribe to your channel. Now the problem is that I want to buy this mug so bad for my morning coffee on my way to work. You and Mr. Mobile aka Michael Fisher make my free time a blast checking out your tech videos, keep up the good work guys
I think the cooling down of the coffee is just as valuable as the keeping hot. I love my current vacuum-insulated mug, but I have to wait like 20 minutes after getting coffee at Caribou or Starbucks to start drinking it stays so hot!!
love the actions shots in the car! most tech reviewers just show the gadgets in perfect studio lighting and nothing else. thanks for keeping it real Modern Dad
Mr Mobile sent me your way with this video, and now I've subbed and binged a huge chunk of your videos. As a dad myself who loves gadgets your videos rock. Keep up the great work, I'm going to stick around a while!
I had to continually talk myself away from an Impulse by here you were persuading me despite that price all the way to the end. Haven't stopped thinking about the ember for nearly 2 days now.
Mr. Mobile sent me here and I'm glad he did. You make some great videos and surprised you only have this much subs. You definitely deserve and need more.
I got linked to this video from Mr Mobile and I am glad I did. I wish I could afford this mug because it seems like a great gadget to have as I commute from home to work on public transportation. That doesn't seem like a major problem, but most of the time when I get to work my once hot cup of coffee is now lukewarm especially on cold winter days. Maybe I might save up and buy this as we get back around to winter. Great review and I really liked how excited you were about the mug. Thanks!
Good review. I liked how you pointed out that you can't burn yourself with the base charger or the mug. I did a review a few weeks after I started using the travel mug, but even though it's really expensive, I really do love it and use it daily. I just wish the price would drop down to be closer to $100. I also got the second charger so I have a charger at home and the office.
Surprising and intriguing. Thanks for bringing a different kind of tech product to the forefront that I might have totally missed. Love the new concept and channel, Keep up the good work Modern Dad!
I don't always drink coffee, but when I do, it's from a $150 mug that looks cool as hell. No seriously, I loved the insights and the way you presented it. It was absolutely chill and down to the facts and use cases that I could relate to. 10/10 will link it to even more people that also need their coffee warm at their desk at all times, especially in my office. :)
Great review! Thought I was going to hate it, but your dry humour won me over dude. Nicely played;) Came here from Mr. Mobile and now subscribed:) What a sucker;) From one modern dad to another.
Thanks for the real life review. Looking at maybe getting this for my engineer Dad for his birthday (but wow the cost). Also, great channel! doing these in your own home and including your family allows me to truly relate (techy father of 3 here). Keep up the good work!
Congrats on the new Channel Phil, and Holy Crap man. It's been a while since I've seen you and you look like a totally different person. Congrats on the health transformation. Time for me to get on that boat ; )
Yeah it really comes through. You seem more alert and focused. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration of what I'm missing out on. I've got the food part down alright, but I'm way to sedentary. Time to get moving again :)
Thank you so much for this review. I agree it looks like an awesome idea/mug and have held it in Starbucks myself. But I keep putting it back on the shelf due to the price tag of $150.00. AND the company just came out with a ceramic open lip to put on in place of the closed lid for the customizable feeling of another $29.00 OK now. So this is turning into a life-changing decision instead of an awesome mug purchase. But I'm getting a good exercise workout taking the mug on/off the shelf at Starbucks as I continue to stare at the devise pondering.
this one is a cool gadget!!! who doesn't like their coffee hot huh!!! but as you said too pricey too!!!! I saw about this cup from +mrmobile from his links I got here..!!! You have videos about some cool stuff !!! love it!!!
Damn. Haven't seen you in a video in awhile Phil.....looking lean and mean dude! what eve you're doing, keep it up........and I subscribed. Came over from Mr. Mobile!
Great and thorough review! You covered all the exact questions I had and now i'm debating spending $150 on a coffee mug.. as ridiculous as that sounds.
Can't I bring my own firewood and matches to work to keep my coffee hot? "Yeah, yeah there is the fire marshal that says NO!! Oh well, still want one even more now.
Heh ... Wife and I decided to ditch the Keurig last year. ... Felt bad about all the plastic. This has been fairly simple, actually. Preheat with hot water. Add 7 scoops of FRESHLY GROUND coffee. Steep for 4 minutes. Press. Enjoy.
As much as I like coffee, the price is insane. Great review showcasing the features though. I especially liked how you kept emphasizing the price point every so often because that's how I was thinking while watching this. I kept yelling in my head "IT'S A FREAKING $150 COFFEE MUG!!" XD
Would love this mug but I'm sure trying to get this to Canada will be over $200 :( Keep the great videos coming ModernDad!! Phil's gotta be my favorite Mobile Nationer!!!
Hi, thanks for that video. Did you find it easy to drink from it in a moving car? I feel like it would be easy to spill coffee on yourself with that 360 degree lid (when on the move)
I feel like a yeti or any mug/thermos of that type will do the exact same thing for just as long at a fraction of the price. Being the Computer Science person that I am, putting computers into everything can be fun but it still has to be practical. I guess if you have $200 to throw away it would be something cool to own for vanity's sake, otherwise just buy a yeti or a cheap knockoff yeti that works just as good.
Just watched this video and subscribed. Its great that your reviewing something like a smart coffee mug. Like how you hard Lego movie 🎥 to make this introduction to ember. Its expensive "Drink it before it gets cold" good suggestion but I think this can do a lot of good to someone like me who "drinks it slow" 🐌 😆
None of their products are dishwasher proof. It's one of their downfalls, oh and the price. Luckily other companies are doing all the same products as ember, but cheaper, and more well thought out. Ember are just good at marketing.
Would be nice if the app had temperature suggestions for specific beverages. There's a whole world of tea-steeping temperatures and times that is totally foreign to me. My range of sensitivity to temperature doesn't extend much further beyond warm/hot/scalding, so superfine control without context isn't very helpful.
keeps hot for up to 2 hours??? any cheap vacuum insulated thermos will go a whole day without too many problems. So I guess the mug is not also insulated (and only has its electronic heating system). I thought well at least if the battery dies, you can still use it as a normal thermos mug....I was wrong. I think for that price is a no buy then in this case. Also let me add that if you open it by pushing the top and there is no lock, this makes it pretty much impossible to carry in a bag unless you are ok with finding your clothes or documents soaked in perfectly warmed up cooled coffee.
do you have to use the base to charge the mug, or can you use an wireless charging pad? If you can't use an wireless charging pad they should change the design to use that instead of some propriety dock.
Yeah. With a standard wireless charging pad they could get the price down to around 25$ for the base, and then the prize of the mug go down to 125$ and with an extra base you hit 150$ that should increase the market of people who would be interested in something like this
Is it double walled for insulation? Because they tend to break on me after a while. A single thick wall would be good. Internal capacity? How easy is it to fit your hand inside to wash? Is the two hours running just on the battery, or is that on the base? In other words, does the base charge the cup as fast as it expends energy?Does the base require a full plug for itself, or can I e.g. connect to my four-way usb plug?Any fancy lights? How water-tight is the lid? Can it be stored in e.g. a bag without leaking? Any external hot patches that would cause issues?
They missed an obvious feature that would have made it closer to being worth $150. They should have added the Mighty Mug feature so it wouldn't tip over.
Seems like a nice cup, but gonna have to agree on the price thing, no way on earth would I pay that much for a cup, I'll let my drink get cold first D:
This is a great video :)! Because there are some jokes and it shows us that this mug is realy usefull and it look cool. I woud buy just I don't have the money for it :/ I like it in the video that it shows us the good part of this ting and the bad part and it's honest!
7 years later and you're the ONLY review I've seen mentioning the custom text personalization for the original travel mug. Crazy! Thanks
Started the video thinking I'd spend the next three minutes making fun of this thing. Ended the video really wanting to buy one.
IKR, this thing's dangerous. Should come with a warning label OF AWESOMENESS.
and add a raspberry pi and a battery and make an implementation for less that 50$,seriously,that would be shweet!!!
Do it carefully or burn your hands with the RaspPi implementation. Seriously though, I guess it would easily exceed the 50$ limit.
This is the first tech review video that I can honestly say was almost perfect. Four reasons:
1. I love coffee and when I get a travel mug it is a big decision on which one to get
2. You read my mind when you said it could be a gift from someone who has no clue what to get me. I deal with this every birthday.

Thanks for being genuine!
I am going to dedicate the rest of my life to hacking Phil's coffee cup.
Jerry Hildenbrand lineage has to have a cappuccino or Bailey's MOD.
I love your sense of humor! I show the video to my mum for the cup and the thing she commented on was how good you were first not the cup!!! Good job keep it yup!!!
Keep these videos coming! Very professional and great topic. I just was chatting with my buddies about this mug. Thanks ModernDad!
I think you absolutely nailed the "gift from someone who doesn't know what to get me" angle - I'd kind of love to get one of these too, but wouldn't dream about ever dropping that much money on a mug. I think I'm too impatient with my coffee anyway.

Great video! You are really comfortable in front of the camera, and that makes the video that much more enjoyable to watch. Keep it up!
love the actions shots in the car! most tech reviewers just show the gadgets in perfect studio lighting and nothing else. thanks for keeping it real Modern Dad
Hahahahah the final advice at the end... 😂
Too simple. :p
Mr Mobile sent me your way with this video, and now I've subbed and binged a huge chunk of your videos. As a dad myself who loves gadgets your videos rock. Keep up the great work, I'm going to stick around a while!
Thanks so much - and tell your friends!

+Robert Walters Thanks so much for checking it out!
I have to agree, that seems like a pretty hefty price for a coffee mug. Thank you for an honest, informative and objective review!
Very refreshing to see uncommon tech that others don't share. Thanks for keeping us in the know!
I don't always drink coffee, but when I do, it's from a $150 mug that looks cool as hell. No seriously, I loved the insights and the way you presented it. Thanks! It's way expensive for a mug, but it's also REALLY good.
This mug is absurd but I really dug the video. Your passion for tech and coffee in infectious. Thanks to Mr.Mobile for leading me to you!
Got sent by Mr. Mobile, first time ever hearing of the channel. Loving it so far.
Thanks so much! Be sure to tell your friends!
Love the honest review Moderndad...just got my $150 coffee mug today..love it..
+Trung Nguyen Nice!!! Enjoy it!
Great review! Thought I was going to hate it, but your dry humour won me over dude. Nicely played;) Came here from Mr. Mobile and now subscribed:) What a sucker;) From one modern dad to another.
Love watching your videos. Keep up the good work. Your reviews are very honest. 👍🏻
great review. you touched upon the everyday usefulness of this product very well, and I am very enticed to buy it for myself
Thanks for this amazing review mate! I was actually looking for a coffee cup/mug like this and I think I just found it!

Cool video great cinematography good information about something new
Great review, and awesome video!
What's it like to clean the lid? The last few 360 coffee mugs I've purchased have been difficult to clean.
Hey ModernDad! Excellent review of the Ember mug. I need this, nearly as addicted to coffee as your videos! You really help quench my tech thirst. :)
This is a very comprehensive video thanks!
Great video! Might consider picking one of these up, providing they ship to the UK! Would probably save me spending so much on coffee..!
My dad will love this thing, i'll be sure to tell him, he just loves getting coffee the right temperature.
It's way cool!
Dont you mean its way HOT? ;]
Nice review, ember is awesome thanks you for reviewing ember mug. Thanks for info. I'll buy the mug in the future.
Came here from Mr.Mobile and subscribed too
Thanks so much! I'll try to do him justice. GET IT??? JUSTICE. (Hi, Justus.)
ModernDad hehe nice.... 😎 😂 😂
Phil Beverage Tips. Loved it.
What's the drink equivalent of NOM NOM NOM.
ModernDad NUM NUM NUM
nice informative video that keeps me from going broke on smart gadgets.
Subbed! nice video!
Hey, awesome video! I'm really glad I found your channel! And I would definitely get one of those mugs if I could lol.

Thanks for covering this dope mug can giving an honest opinion on the price XD a great way to keep coffee warm on the go... for only 150 dollars :P
this one is a cool gadget!!! who doesn't like their coffee hot huh!!! but as you said too pricey too!!!! I saw about this cup from +mrmobile from his links I got here..!!! You have videos about some cool stuff !!! love it!!!
Thanks for watching!
Nice review *thumbs up*. Kinda curious how long the battery last though.
Thanks Mr. Mobile
He's a good egg, that's for sure.
Damn. Haven't seen you in a video in awhile Phil.....looking lean and mean dude! what eve you're doing, keep it up........and I subscribed. Came over from Mr. Mobile!
It's me!!! (And it's you!!!)
I originally saw this on Jerry Rig Everything. I haven't purchased one but it's pretty amazing!
Awesome video. Great concept.
Came here from Mr. Mobile, this channel is actually pretty good, very good.
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the video it was really informatie!
Great and thorough review! You covered all the exact questions I had and now i'm debating spending $150 on a coffee mug.. as ridiculous as that sounds.
Very expressive .
Subscribed - Thanks Mr. Mobile! Thanks Modern Dad!
No, thank you!!!
Can't I bring my own firewood and matches to work to keep my coffee hot? "Yeah, yeah there is the fire marshal that says NO!! Oh well, still want one even more now.
Thank you
Would love a follow up as to what your choices are for making that perfect cup of coffee. I massacre coffee when attempting to use my French press.
Trust me, I've been yelling that at myself. ... And then enjoying hot coffee.
Loving the West Wing Weekly shirt Phil!
*does the hand signal*
I thought that was the signal for the other thing.
so this or the no-tip mug you showed us on your desk a couple of videos ago?
One keeps things precisely hot. ... The other keeps them mostly vertical.
Would love this mug but I'm sure trying to get this to Canada will be over $200 :(
Keep the great videos coming ModernDad!! Phil's gotta be my favorite Mobile Nationer!!!
Hi, thanks for that video. Did you find it easy to drink from it in a moving car? I feel like it would be easy to spill coffee on yourself with that 360 degree lid (when on the move)
The shape of the high tech Mug seems easy to topple though.
The coffee runs to the bottom, though. Because GRAVITY. :p
I feel like a yeti or any mug/thermos of that type will do the exact same thing for just as long at a fraction of the price. Being the Computer Science person that I am, putting computers into everything can be fun but it still has to be practical. Mr.Mobile brought me to sub to you! I actually heard him talk about you a while ago in a podcast
MrMobile led me here! Nice video, deserves a sub!
Thanks!
I would not mind having to pay a 1$ premium per perfect temperature coffee everyday.
That's kind of how I look at it. Is it cheap? Hell no. But if I use it EVERY SINGLE DAY. ... FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE ...
seriously. Mine was free because it was a gift, but this is a genuinely nice thing that will get used alll the time.
Cool review and really informative, I kinda want to buy one, but the price is a little high. Thanks
How do you wash it? It can't be dishwasher safe, can it?
Of course not. ... You hand wash it. With your hands. And soap. And water.
Hahaha. For $150, it had better just wash itself!
For $150 it should've been dishwasher safe and have a usb C port for charging without dock.
None of their products are dishwasher proof. It's one of their downfalls, oh and the price. Luckily other companies are doing all the same products as ember, but cheaper, and more well thought out. Ember are just good at marketing.
Just came from mr mobile . Loved the video and subed
Welcome, and thanks!
Coming from mr.mobile, staying for some dad jokes with tech reviews...😜
Spoiler: I only have good Dad Jokes.
The good ones are the baddest...👍
Keep the practical reviews coming, your editing has a class similar to Mr.mobile as well...👌
Would be nice if the app had temperature suggestions for specific beverages. There's a whole world of tea-steeping temperatures and times that is totally foreign to me. My range of sensitivity to temperature doesn't extend much further beyond warm/hot/scalding, so superfine control without context isn't very helpful.
It does.
Great review! I really like the mug, but it's so....expensive

looking in great shape Phill
Thanks! Still have a little ways to go, but I'm pleased with the progress.
Gah, now you've got me wanting one of these! Great vid, btw. ☺️
do you have to use the base to charge the mug, or can you use an wireless charging pad?
If you can't use an wireless charging pad they should change the design to use that instead of some propriety dock.
Just the base ... And that extra $50 - $68, actually, after shipping - hurt.
Yeah. With a standard wireless charging pad they could get the price down to around 25$ for the base, and then the prize of the mug go down to 125$ and with an extra base you hit 150$ that should increase the market of people who would be interested in something like this

Great video. Don't know if I want to pay +$150 for a coffee mug. I think I'll stay with my Contigo. Mr. Mobile brought me here. Subscribing now!!!
had to give thumbs up because of the ending
Is there a way for the display to tell u when it’s full when filling?
No. But you could, uh, just look in it?
ModernDad yea mine was on machine-tight so I didn’t think it was meant to be unscrewed. I figured it out tho.
is that the west wing weekly T-Shirt I noticed?
Indeed!
... What's next.
Ahhh, the good ol'day of WEST WING! cool cup too :)
Will it leek if it is tipped over?? Or is the seal liquid tight
It'll leak if the lip flip thing is open. Otherwise it's pretty solid.
Annnnnd you just got another subscriber!
@MrMobile brought me here, and.... i like your review so you got a new subscriber :)
Thanks so much!
I fucking love you beard.
Good review! I'll definitely drink my coffee faster lol
Is it dishwasher safe?
Negative. Hand-wash.
I'd pay another hundred for a dishwasher safe version. I think they'll do it for the next version.
ModernDad maybe self cleaning? I guess some hot vinegar will do the trick
too much money, period. get an Ozark trail stainless double wall instead for $9.
I'm sorry but I can't hear you OVER THE SOUND OF MY PERFECTLY HOT BUT VERY EXPENSIVE CUP OF COFFEE.
Love that mug, keeps shit hot or cold forever!!
and add a raspberry pi and a battery and make an implementation for less that 50$,seriously,that would be shweet!!!
Not everyone knows how to rasberry pi :c
You can learn anything if you want to,and if you have the time and energy to do it.
They missed an obvious feature that would have made it closer to being worth $150. They should have added the Mighty Mug feature so it wouldn't tip over.
For another $50, right? :p
In for a penny in for a pound. LOL
Love the West Wing reference!
Such a good podcast. (And a comfy shirt.)
Seems like a nice cup, but gonna have to agree on the price thing, no way on earth would I pay that much for a cup, I'll let my drink get cold first D:
What about washing?
Hand wash. NBD.
ModernDad so like can it be submerged in water? Because i hand wash my dishes.
Yes. You can get it wet on the inside and on the outside.
Ooooohhhhh I want one!!!
I think we're Kindred Coffee Spirits.
I say just inject it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I may be missing something, but I feel like the amount of coffee that holds would take me 30 mins to drink maximum.
Just 12 ounces. ... A shot, really. ;)
This is a great video :)! Because there are some jokes and it shows us that this mug is realy usefull and it look cool. I woud buy just I don't have the money for it :/ I like it in the video that it shows us the good part of this ting and the bad part and it's honest!
I would really be into this if say it cost $50, but damn...$150 yea I'll just have to deal with not so hot coffee by the bottom of the cup
It is not cheap.
Nice Video! 😀
Thanks!
