    Fascinating, but it would be wonderful to find a video of someone who has not great wealth, who lives in quite simple surroundings but with a lively discerning eye and taste for things that enliven them without spending substantial amounts of money to procure them. That is where we general folk might find some real sense of connection. Otherwise, it's mere 'how the other half' live.

      Oh, you'll be surprised how many of these interesting art objects new and antique can be discovered dusty somewhere on a shelf for sale for a few pennies. Money might help to buy some art, but It is most often the eyes for such objects, their placements and the story you put behind them that makes them great

      Very marxist response. What the artist says is not and should not be for everyone. Not everyone cand say what he says and not everyone could (or should) live like that. At some point in the video his wife even said that she could not live in a minimalistic space i.e. in a general apartment building.

      There was a couple in New York who amassed a large collection of conceptual art, he was government clerk, I think she was a librarian, 60 minutes did a cover of them..I'm drawing a blank on their name..

      Well you’re watching a video of Alex Vervoordt discussing the curation of his fine art and antique collection on the TEFAF RUclips channel. It seems like you’re in the wrong place if you’re looking for content the general folk can relate to.
      Also regardless of wealth, the principles that guide his taste and curation (knowledge of art/design history, tension between old and new, the humble imperfections of natural forms) can be used by anyone willing to implement them.

    In a world of such beautiful hand carved woods, natural stone, and art it is impossible for me to be a minimalist. There is usually a story behind my favorite things.

    This is so beautiful. Where he said about the Japanese aesthetics - it reminded me of who I am, and as a young Japanese, I want to cherish that kind of old spirit and aesthetics as he does. Japan is an island country. People of Japan has historically welcomed and absorbed "new cultures" that came from overseas, and didn't really cherish the "ancient" that we have cultivated. This is so different from western culture. I wish more Japanese people realize the old beauty that lies in their mother culture.

    • @theodorurhed
      @theodorurhed Год назад +1

      Strange - to me Japan is a country with awe-inspiring tradition, not just in the preservation of culture and aesthetics, but specifically in the art of doing, with many examples of crafts where mastery is still a virtue. I feel in (secularized) western culture there is no longer any connection to the traditions of old and mastery is long rejected in favour of comfort and work-life balance. Sad to hear it is also going this way in Japan. Greetings from Sweden!

    • @purplea9367
      @purplea9367 Год назад

      @@theodorurhed What you say is true too! As me myself being a traditional craft lover, I appreciate what you said about mastery in Japan. I guess in non-western societies, tradition is vivid and resilient just because our lifestyle is westernized, and we know it will die out if we don't actively protect it. In fact, a lot of traditional crafting techniques are endangered, and are disappearing each day with retirements / passing away of artisans. And it is also true that there are many consumers who wants to be involved in preserving traditions.
      Btw, what I meant about Japanese society not cherishing the past - actually relates to our unique conceptualization of "time" here in Japanese culture. In Western conceptualization of time, there is past, present and future, and present is captured in between past and future. In Japan we traditionally have a strong sense of capturing "now, here" only, so time is the eternal continuation the present. Therefore we don't really pay attention to the present in relation to the past. (Btw this is a cultural theory by Shuichi Kato, a famous cultural critic in Japan.)
      I strongly feel this difference when I go to karaoke with western people. It made me so jealous when I saw the crowd singing Piano Man altogether! Cherishing past masterpieces (which I rarely see in Japan!). This is what I really admire about western culture. Cheers from Japan!

    • @theodorurhed
      @theodorurhed Год назад

      @@purplea9367 That is very interesting, thank you! To have a culture that would be more concerned about the present is then something I'm jealous of. Sweden's entire national image is that of a lost golden age (a time when life was simple and beautiful and with a hopeful future), with a shame of our present state, and a desperate fight for our future - to regain the imagined feeling of those glory days, while all the while failing to appreciate what we have/are.
      There probably is a balance to be found in all this, as I myself feel very ambivalent to the old world. The 1800s cultivated craftsmanship, quality and beauty to such an extent that the era produced some of the finest art, objects and buildings in history, while at the same time cultivating a mindset in the people that would lead to unparalleled suffering in the world.
      The tightrope of strict discipline probably needs to be coupled with a softness and ease and appreciation for life and the present for any long term success (which is what I believe I see very much of in Japanese tradition). Lest the harsh discipline, enforced through violence, lead to a cruel and bitter people, as I believe was the method that ultimately failed in the west.

    one could accuse you of being unfair or even misleading when your footage is obviously color-corrected. why would you do that? colors, real colors of objects, art, how they mesh together is an enormous part of what makes a place harmonious or not and it this man is held as an example of taste, shouldn't the audience be allowed to see with utmost accuracy and fidelity what his living space *actually* looks like, what the colors really are and therefore what constitutes good taste? what's the purpose of this then? if you're willing to edit him, in order to improve him, I suppose, what does that say about the respect you have for him and his taste?
