  • Explaining all KSP rocket engines! (Real life, cycles, cooling & MORE)
    In Kerbal Space Program, you can just click a rocket engine under a fuel tank, press the space bar, and you go up. In real life, it is not nearly that easy. Today, we will be covering all the liquid fueled rocket engines in both Kerbal Space Program (KSP) games, and we will be learning about their real life counterparts, engine cycles, cooling mechanisms, and much, much more. This is my first Kerbal Rocket Science video.
    I have spent a lot of time on this video, so if you liked it please consider liking the video and subscribing to the channel, it helps out a ton and its really appreciated.

    Thoughts and corrections:
    I've never played KSP 2, so I can't really comment on those.
    -The Poodle was probably inspired by the dual engine configuration on the original centaur stage, now making a return with Centaur V and the dual engine Common Centaur for CST-100 flights.
    -the RS-25 powerhead is an absolutely messy marvel. it has FIVE pumps, most operating independently of each other. The fuel preburner runs the HPFTP, after which fuel is routed through the regen channels, where some is tapped off and used expander style to run the LPFTP, before going to the MCC. The Oxygen preburner powers the HPOTP, and a small kick pump which runs on the same shaft as the HPOTP to raise the pressure of a little bit of oxidizer to route to both preburners.(These are the ONLY pumps that run on the same shaft in the engine). Some oxygen coming out of the HPOTP is routed through a hydraulic turbine (this uses liquid instead of gas, think about what they use in hydroelectric dams) which is used to power the LPOTP.
    -The Skipper, for me has always been whatever I want it to be. I've always seen it as a generic kerolox vacuum engine, used for a variety of purposes, but most often I've seen it used as an Mvac stand in.
    -The plumes for the Cheetah and Wolfhound have always made me headcannon those as hydrolox engines, also because they have rediculously high ISP, even if their real life counterparts ran on hypergols. I have considered going into waterfall and adjusting the plumes, but the ISP is still way too high. (General formula for converting real ISPs into KSP ones, if real ISP is > 300, subtract 300, divide by 2, then add 300. For example, the vector. 451 - 300 = 151 151/2 = 75.5 ~~ 76 = 376. For balance reasons, the normal vector doesn't have this, but the Wolfhound and Cheetah are way up there.)
    -The J-2X was considered for the SLS Block 2 upper stage, as where the Pyrios boosters, in the PDR, however, in the CDR, they really solidified SLS's purpose as being meant for deep space, and that meant everything that would detract from that ability was out the window. The old EDS would have gotten slightly less payload to TLI than the EUS, and the new BOLE boosters have their thrust profiled specifically to give better payload capacity to deep space compared to the RSRMVs and Pyrios. Plus, the new GSE, new ML required, etc just wouldn't make liquid boosters worthwhile unless you had a high enough flight rate that the big solids damaging the flame trench was a cause for concern.
    -The Terrier does make me think LMDE, however, the plume makes me think it's running Methalox.
    The LMAE did not have any radiatively cooled segments, it was entirely ablatively cooled since it was partially stuck up in the LM, and there would be no place to radiate the heat away to. It also could not gimbal or restart.

    • @zenothksp
      @zenothksp  Месяц назад

      Awesome! I like seeing other peoples thoughts on the engines too. I did consider the Poodle as the Centaur but in game the plumbing looked off, and according to some people it is the transstage on the Titan-IIIC. For the plumes of Terrier, Cheetah and Wolfhound I did think they looked different to the RS-25/Vector which is why I put the fuels as hypergol (irl they are), but the different plumes are probably due to different expansion ratios. And sadly in KSP the performance (ISP/Thrust) is all over the place compared to real engines, so I didn't really look into that when deciding the propellants.

    I think the Skipper engine is loosely based on the J-2, as that is the only comparable upper stage engine. The Poodle is probably based on the RL-10, but when the devs saw the comically large nozzle on the RL-10B2, they thought about making it comically small, it was also the most efficient chemical engine for a long time, just like the RL-10B2. The making History DLC of course messed that all up with power creeping the hell out of the poodle and adding the Skiff Engine.

    Just a minor correction 🤓, the terrier plume on (stock) waterfall is methalox, and the wolfhound (supposedly) is hydrolox (I think it looks more like methalox at sea level but the mod creator said that it was hydrolox...). But don't worry!!! Stock Waterfall Effects plumes were selected based on KSP performance rather than on their analogues... So you're still correct! Also... Nice video😄

      I was so hyped for the game but after a few hours I just stopped playing it and installed KSP1 back on and modded it instead. I made about 5 crafts and every single one got somehow corrupted by bugs, my Kerbals despawned, my landers sinked beneath the ground, and one spaceship just... disappeared from orbit.
      I wish I could have enjoyed the game, but I just couldn't bear myself to spend another 5 hours building a ship, just to see it despawned and/or swallowed by the ground on craft loading (I just went to tracking center, then went to control the craft and boom - it was beneath the ground, on it's way to the core... on next reload of the craft it no longer existed.)
