June 29, 2012 derecho storm Newark, Ohio in Licking County

  • I'll be interested to hear if we experienced tornadic activity in this one. They called the system a Derecho storm. This storm knocked down big, strong trees and power lines.Friends of ours were driving through Heath on SR79 when it hit. They saw debris swirling around in front of them. A conversation with a Verizon store rep at that location revealed the wind had picked up the dirt and debris from a construction site nearby and made an almost opaque wall of wind.
I left the middle portion of the video even though it's a mess. I wanted to keep my comments on there. My mother-in-law lives in an apartment downstairs; that's what I was referring to when I told the dogs to come with me. LOL
As of July 3, we are still without power in my neighborhood. Many of us throughout the county are still in the dark. AEP crews from Alabama and Texas (and other states I'm sure) are here trying to get a tremendous amount of work done.
UPDATE: We were without power from June 29 through the evening of July 7, our neighborhood being one of the last in the county to be restored. AEP had crews in from Texas, Alabama and Canada (probably more areas) working long, hot days. I don't envy them.
One of the crew members who worked on our lines told my neighbor that they'd been all over Licking County and our street and the one next to it sustained the worst damage out of any in the County. We kept trying to tell people how bad it was, but didn't think people took us seriously.
We feel a little vindicated. ;)

It was a miserable eight days, let me tell you! We were blessed to have friends whose power came on and I spent my days doing laundry and hanging out with them in various areas. My husband's office got power back Monday, I think, so we spent evenings there before heading home to sleep. Friday night, we slept on air mattresses at the office -- Heavenly to sleep in cool air!

I live in Newark Ohio and work for a tree outfit. by far the worst storm damage we've ever had. I actually almost lost 3 fingers from a chainsaw cleaning a pine tree off a house on country club drive that day. literally scarred forever from that storm

I worked at The Advocate at the time and lived in Thornville. I remember seeing the storm marching our way, and I first noticed it because it delayed a Cubs game that afternoon I was planning to listen to while I worked. For a storm to march that far that fast was something I'd never seen. I truly had no grasp of the damage until I tried to get home. It was an obstacle course getting around everything.
And as so many others have mentioned, that storm did nothing to lessen the heat. That is one of the hottest spells I can remember in my entire lifetime. Over a week later, the highs were 105 or more. Not the heat index, the actual highs.

I was in Hebron about this time, racing home. there literally was a wall of wind & debris across a street, that I later went down & ended up driving over a couple of tree limbs. Once I was inside, I STAYED there for the rest of the night. My power blinked several times but somehow stayed on!

We just outside of Hebron city limits lost our power until July 7th. Fortunately, we had a working generator and I got a fairly new window unit ac (110) that was stored in the garage. If not for that, we would've probably had to sleep in the cars. Kroger, however looked like the apocalypse had come through, never seen it that stripped before!

Yes, it was crazy! Meijer in Newark stayed open and took care of their customers. We'll always remember that. It was a big loss when they closed the Newark store.

I lived in Sistersville WV when this happened, I was 11 in bible school when the teachers told us to get downstairs and that it was a tornado. Our power was out for more than a week, seeking refuge in the local fire department building. The storm also took down a massive oak tree in my grandmother’s yard. I’m surprised nobody was hurt by it honestly

I'm a meteorologist in Toledo, Ohio. Much of our tv-viewing area was impacted by this Derecho. I think your video is a great depiction of this event and it shows what a lot of families went through that evening. Could I use parts of your video for a story I'm working on? I'm doing a long-form case study of the 2012 Derecho. Thank you!

Here in southern Ohio it had been pretty cloudy most of the day, breezy, and it was really hot. 103° i believe it was. At around 5:30pm it was completely calm, we knew the storm was coming. A few minutes later it was just this big green wall coming toward us. We cooled from 103° to 58° from the time the storm hit til after it passed. We were all so cold cuz we were in shorts and tank tops xD 2021 is looking quite like a similar year to 2012 with these frequent heatwaves. Maybe we'll see another Derecho 😱

That sound can be creepy as hell at night when you're alone, and in a loud storm! In my house, the wind whistles through the window air vents in strong wind, and sound a bit like flutes; just not so graceful! There's one which sounds like a demented elephant in very strong gusts, and, because it's the other side of the house, abruptly wakes me and scares the hell out of me!

Baltimore City Maryland where I used to live, got hit by this storm. I had no power for 9 days. This storm came in my old area late in the evening on 6-29-12 with winds as high as 80 mph on the leading edge. There was also prolific lightning strikes and flash flooding rain and a few trees were on the ground.

I have family who live in Newark, off of Church St., near Dietrich. They are okay, but no power, as I'm getting cell phone text messages from them. This has to be almost as bad as the tornado that touched around that neighborhood in June 2010, huh? I drove in ther next day to visit on vacation and saw all of the branches down. Hope everyone is hanging in with the heat and humidity. :(

You can see all my trees sideways limbs snapping and around front it blew limbs out of the trees. You can see my ash tree at a 90%angle and hear the howl. I always said if I get the chance I’ll film this stuff and not go in when it gets to the good stuff because after being rejected for 43 years I had rather get killed in the storm and put my faith in Jesus to give me a perfect life instead and go upstairs when Its storming Choose Him today this life is just a vapor but make one forever with Jesus amen.

It was some storm, that's for sure. The gazebo wasn't as bad as I thought, but it has bungee cords holding parts of the canopy in place since the hooks and elastic straps broke. The good thing is, the canopy had fit and drainage defects I had, in May, already documented with the company I ordered it from online, and they are sending a replacement. Let's hope we don't get more storms! LOL
