      Yep, children are known for their decision making skills in life threatening situations. Kind of like the parent listened to the kid and put them closer to the epicenter of the storm and had to turn around... again? Kids were very well behaved, good job on the parent there... but not every situation calls for a child's input.

    The Illinois derecho went through my hometown last June while I was at work. During the middle of it, an EF2 tornado passed about 150 yards from my house. I was desperately trying to call/text/messenger my wife to get the kids into the storage room under the stairs in my basement but the cell towers were all messed up. I saw the rotation on the radar scope app right over my home. We had a 4 foot around pin oak fall inches from my house. The whole area was a total mess. More than 100k people were without power in our county alone. There were reports of 100mph wind gusts. I feel for this family because I know my kids were equally afraid and they were in a basement. You are a good mom. You kept your cool and did what you had to do.

      I get annoyed when my dog won't stop barking at the mail man, so I would totally lose my mind with a wailing child. I'm not cut out for being a parent at all, but at least I know that before damaging an innocent child I guess!

    The boy has the mark of a leader. He was aware that things were out of his control, yet kept his composure through it all and helped lead mom/siblings to safety. That can't be taught, it's just natural talent. As for violated traffic laws, I'd hope people would understand the circumstances called for that action.

      I was manager on duty in a store when this storm hit, and people looked at me like I was crazy when I directed everyone to proceed to the back of the store, away from all the front windows.... until the lights started flickering, the power cut, and the roof and windows were rattling. I couldn't believe how oblivious people were to this approaching storm. Everyone was taken by surprise. They thought maybe we'd get a light rain. I had been monitoring it for a couple of hours though and saw that it would be a big one.
      edit: The tornado siren started going off, and a lady impatiently asked for my help to get a balloon bouquet. I looked at her like she was nuts.

    I’ve always asked my kids opinions, I’ve always listened to what they have to say. I avoided “baby talk” and spoke to them as small humans from the day they were born and even asked others not to baby talk to them. They are well spoken, intelligent…they know their value and that in respect their input. I watch my oldest two doing the same things with their children and it warms my heart.
    Children are small humans and everything they become in life is from what they learn, see, feel. Include them. Always.

      @@yeahyeahyeah5089 how you teach your kid plays a huge factor in their overall intelligence and this is coming from experience as someone who has lived with a mother who has cared for at least 20 different kids within my lifetime. Like the original commenter stated, if you treat your kids as adults they will become very mature and tend to become fast learners. Speaking from experience, people who over-do the whole baby talk thing to their kids end up raising children who aren't as intelligent and usually grow up to have lower cognitive levels. Some of my nephews and nieces have mild mental illness which results in them being a bit slow and it doesn't help when their relatives on the other side of their family treat the kids as if they are little "dur brains". We have noticed however that when my nieces and nephews stay with my mother, their habits change. They become more aware of their surroundings and how to interact with the things around them as a kid with normal cognitive levels would. This is simply because my mother perseveres with methods of teaching that doesn't involve "baby-ing" her grandchildren as well as her children. You don't have to be a child born with inherent high IQ levels to be generically smart or intelligent, just teach your kids in a manner that they will be learning ahead of their age and your kids will be fortunate to have a parent(s) who takes that extra thought and time to increase their chances of being intelligent as they grow. It all starts at home

    • @shonteyer
      @shonteyer 2 года назад +9

      I love this. Good on you for doing the right thing for your children. My mother did the same for her children and she tries to instill the same methods of teaching with her grandchildren. Oddly enough, my brother is the only sibling with children who hasn't followed this method and he continues to ignore my mothers advice and constantly "baby talks" to his children as well as teach them at levels below/at their recommended age rather than teach them at a level higher than their age.. This has resulted in his children being a bit slow in comparison to the rest of the grandkids because the rest of the grandkids are either being raised with my mother or are being raised by my siblings who have listened to my mother when she says "treat your children as if they are small humans and not illiterate baboons". I totally agree with you as I have seen how it really works in children. Speaking to them in a mature manner and teaching them ideas, principles and concepts above a child's age/maturity group will result in an intelligent child who has high functioning cognitivity as well as a child who is mature and sensible for their age. 😁
