Common mistakes in Oxford applications

- What are the most common things people get wrong when applying to the University of Oxford?
I sat down with YOUR questions and the lovely Dan Pugh-Bevan from my old college at Oxford University, St Peters! Dan's job is to help people apply to Oxford, and to dispel any myths that you might believe about the university and the process of applying.
Dan thinks the most common mistakes are:
1. Not applying at all!
2. Not practising for the admissions tests.
3. Not taking risks.
4. Not saying 'I don't know' in the interview.
Check out life at my old college!

I am Simon, a fourth year PhD candidate at the University of Exeter. I upload videos on bits of science which are relevant to what I do, and sometimes just because they're really cool.

My brother and I have just sent our applications to Exeter College and Merton to do physics, so it's PAT preparation all the way to November...
Best of luck! You might have already seen this, but I actually did a video all about preparing for the PAT a while ago: ruclips.net/video/gRk3fxsjrpE/видео.html
Nice mate.... get in there
I'm directly competing with you then! I sent an application for physics at Merton too. D:
Same~~~ Although it's just me to Merton, and I am applying for Physics and Philosophy~ Hope we all get in~~
Cheers Simon, I forgot you made that video!
Sent off my application for NatSci at Queens' Cambridge yesterday and I wanted to say how instrumental this channel has been in giving me enough confidence to apply, especially coming from a state school background.
Thank you Simon.
I met Dan when I visited St Peters on the choral scholarship open days back in 2019, he was absolutely lovely and gave me some really useful advice about Oxford! This video very accurately sums up the main points.
Saw Dan at Oxford open day. Great guy!
He's an absolute gem. Seriously articulate and passionate about the issues at stake.
Having been through the process, this is such an accurate video! I couldn't have put it better myself! Great video Simon :D
I just look to this channel for inspiration, thankyou Simon for getting me through a tough A level and Summer period. Loving Uni atm, Uni of Sheffield is wayyy different from what I imagined. Keep up the good work 💪
Waiting for references and then will be applying to Brasenose/Keble for Physics. Thanks Simon, inspiration.
Awesome vid!
The recap at the end was also very nice ^^
Applying to Jesus for English! Probably wouldn't be if it wasn't for this channel! Such useful advice!
Best of luck with your application! I'll be keeping some fingers crossed for you :)
Ffion Wyn Jones If you get in, please tell us (I know results will be in a while but whatever😂)
Good luck!
Sotiris Maragos will do! Fingers crossed!
Simon Clark thanks!!
Just sent in my application for Maths at St. Peters this morning, thanks for the advice Simon!
Matthew Knowles If you get in tell us! ( I know it's a while until then but... yeah)
Sotiris Maragos will do!
*WOoOOOooOOO* good luck! I hope you get it :)
Thank you!
I went to Peter's so if you want to know what it's like, ask away!
Bless you, Simon.
Just applied for PPE at Keble :)
This is sooooo useful!!
I think I need to download this and keep it on my phone and watch when the time comes to apply for it... Thanks Simon
Applications can go in now. Deadline is October 15th.
LEV3L I know but I just started my undergrad so I need this video in 4years
I want to do masters at Oxford. And my bachelors is an engineering from biotech!! have two years of experience as an English teacher for IGCSE. What should I do to get into oxford for a pg in English literature ?
Question 1 can i do the admission test with bad result ?
I’m in year 11 but I’m already interested in researching about universities
+Molly Brown it's the perfect time to start researching!
What can I do after getting a natural science degree ?
I am currently talking to the physics department at Oxford about doing a video on this very topic!
You can spread your wings and get pretty much any job
I have asked for this before and I remember you replied that you don't know much about it... but again :D can you please make something like this video about international applications (specifically for Ph.D.)?
Way ahead of you... there are four more videos like this coming out this week! One of them is about international applications, but for undergraduate rather than graduate study I'm afraid. The advice should still apply though, as by necessity it was quite generic!
Simon Clark do u know anything about international students having medical degree?
I too think some videos about PhD applications would be really helpful. I'm going through the process now and it seems much more freeform than undergrad (or even Master's) applications when it comes to reaching out to potential supervisors, talking about potential projects (when a specific one isn't being advertised), and especially the ins and outs of funded studenships.
As far as I can tell, and in my personal experience, applying to Oxbridge for PhDs is the same as applying for PhDs anywhere - the system varies a little uni by uni but is largely the same. As such I'll have to refer you to the videos I made on PhD applications already!
thanks for the reply :) can't wait to see the video then!
Applied to Cambridge but got rejected without an interview
Sir plz tell me the right side of your sincerely is it right or left????
I’m good at all three sciences and ICT but I’m fairly average at every other subject. What careers could I go into?
Sachin Sharma do what you want
Go talk to some scientist, do some work experience/shadowing if possible. Do what you're most interested in.
It really depends. Do you enjoy programming? Become a software engineer. Do you like biology and chemistry? Go into Pharmaceuticals. If you are good at maths, you can become basically anything finance related.
Can I apply early September 😳😳☹
I'm applying for art history, I'm really scared
Hey Simon do you know any tips for applying for a humanities at Exeter.
I'm afraid not, though I might do a few videos like this for Exeter after I finish my thesis!
thanks for replying
I got 2 A’s, 3bs and 5cs at gcse ,which I know are highly mediocre yet I am studying chemistry biology and English literature and been the part of many extracurricular activities. If I got As/A stars, what are the chances of me getting into oxford?
I'm afraid that with those GCSEs you would find it very difficult to get in, even with all A*s predicted you would be unlikely to be offered an interview.
Sam Scott Cambridge are one of the few unis that don’t care about gcse results so if you got good a levels then you’d be okay
Could it still be possible for Cambridge then?
Oxford do not care about GCSE results if you already have your A Levels. Went on the open day this year, I'm doing a gap year so I already have my A levels. I got A*A*A and a full marks EPQ. At GCSE I got 1 A, 6 Bs, 1 C and D. I asked about this and they said they didn't care. Just do a gap year. If you have a good personal statement, smash the TSA you should get an interview and if you did well at that I don't know why you wouldn't be considered.
I know this comment was from 9 months ago but other people will be browsing through the comments and I think this is useful information to know.
@@Pilgrim1st hey man. Did you get in?
Been practicing for STEP for months... Applying to Cambridge (Trinity) is already stressful
If you search "Cambridge Step Assignments", they provide some questions and guide you through how to tackle them, there are around 25 of them for STEP 1 and more for STEP 2 - they're really helpful when you first look into STEP questions. Also the more questions you do the better, my teacher said to not put a question down for at least a few weeks after first looking at it. Hope they help!
Diogo Santos did you get in?
Hudawi 💯💯😍😍🥰🥰
AYYY 11 minutes late but still early
I don't think I'll get in with 8 A grades and 1 B at gcses😭😭😭😭
sounds just like harry potter......
